So it’s been a while since I’ve read but I finally finished this intriguing beauty! Psychopathia Sexualis is a German psychiatry book from the late 1800s and gained some popularity from fellow psychiatrists and the public and also hate from the church (gasp*). It of course is outdated when it comes to women (who were not considered sexual people unless mentally “tainted”) and the lgbt community (he tried to be sympathetic towards “congenital homosexuals” and how they should not be considered criminals cause they “don’t see themselves as unnatural” but still treats them as tainted people who are below “normal” people). However the cases are what kept me intrigued reading about different issues and where they believe they’ve stemmed from and how their physical measurements (I.e cranial shape, brain anomalies, family history, and genital measurements) may contribute to different sexual deviancies. The Hag-Seed has such an insane plot for revenge that’s 12 years in the making and a great internal monologue that drew me in and kept the pacing fast all the way up to the ketamine-mushroom “immersion theatre” Felix forces upon the men he’s getting revenge on! I’ve never read the Tempest so I’m probably not getting as much out of this book as I could but @therealmargaretatwood put a synopsis at the end that helped see the parallels in her story. There’s still a lot of the play in the book because the main character is directing the Tempest at a Canadian prison with the inmates as the cast. I enjoyed seeing the inmates learning/acting/interpreting the play and how the inmates round out the characters at the end, as you would in class, giving interpretations and their feelings of the roles they’ve played. The Witch’s Heart was so good! My only knowledge of Norse mythology was the MCU so basically just knew a few names.. @gengornichec does an amazing job introducing the reader to the Nine Worlds following Angrboda as she raises her and Loki’s children until Ragnarok happens. By far the most disturbing dystopian series I’ve ever read! The Unwind series shows America post civil war over abortion and somehow the agreement is you can have your kid cut up and used as parts for people who need/want them from ages 13-18! I greatly enjoy this series and @nealshusterman gives these brilliant character arcs that you will not be able to predict! He also has terrifyingly brilliant imagery with an unwinding that gave me nightmares! Heard about #briefinterviewswithhideousmen through @theoffice because it was @johnkrasinski director debut so I had to read it! Such a good continuation of #thehandmaidstale! I enjoyed seeing the corruption at each level having multiple points of view. I knew reading this would upset me because of the current horrible political climate fueled by #cult45 and, of course, it did. The frightening ties one can make to today’s “patriotic” right wing extremists to how the events in #thehandmaidstale played out is extremely unsettling…it makes the #insurrection of Jan 6 look even more dangerous! Omg this series was insane! I know it looks like smut but there’s honestly only a couple vanilla scenes per book. This is the best revenge serial killer plot I’ve read or seen! So I never planned on reading this book cause it just looked like some boring chick lit book 😅 but @alannarenee1985 recommended it to me and after I saw @taylorswift post about it I knew I had to do it and it was worth it! Such a surprisingly good story with a few awesome plot twists and an ending that made my jaw drop!
