My opinion on Berdly is that he's a funny character with a nice and tidy little arc in chapter 2 who otherwise has no place in the grander plot and was correctly moved to the side after his usefulness was expended.

To me it's always been incredibly obvious that he was never meant to be more than an accessory to Noelle's character arc and I never once entertained the idea of him entering another Dark World. Him and Jevil exist on the same plane of "they had a set purpose within the story that is now done" that the Deltarune fandom refuses to acknowledge and it's kind of pissing me off.

"Why didn't Susie think of including Berdly? He's way stronger than Noelle!" Because Susie doesn't fucking like him and he's an idiot. He was able to "tank" the Fun Gang in the same way literally every other miniboss can. Why doesn't Susie ask fucking Rouxls Kaard to join them since apparently the ability to last more than 2 rounds of combat is the best powerscaling criteria this fandom has to offer?

Like can you imagine? Out of all the characters that Susie could possibly think of to help them in their quest to defeat the Knight and save Undyne and Asgore, she calls on fucking Berdly. The guy who's whole existence post-chapter 2 is to either be the world's most awkward (yet supportive) fourth wheel or be dead. Like yeah man, that's our fucking guy. That's who we want for Knight Fight part 2: fucking Berdly.

imagine you had a friend who constantly made jokes at the expense of something you loved. they're never funny, but they seem to expect you to laugh even though the punchline is just, "this thing you love sucks ass". it's not even really a joke, there's nothing funny about it, you can tell that they genuinely actually believe it. but they insist it's just a joke!

no matter what the situation is, they're always bringing the social interaction to a screeching halt with these jokes. nobody ever wants to participate in this joke with them. nobody agrees with the premise. nobody ever knows what to say afterwards, it's just an awkward moment and a subject change. but they just keep doing it.

you have to stop with the self-deprecatory "humor", it's not fun for anyone including you.

the more i talk to extended family the more i learn that it was EXTREMELY obvious to all the adults around me as a child that something had gone horribly wrong and i needed professional help, but i guess there's some sort of prime directive thing where you can suggest to the kid's parents that the kid might need help but you can never ever ever let on to the kid that you can tell something is wrong. you just have to hold on to that until the kid becomes an adult who's able to say "so i think i experienced a lot of trauma when i was very little" and then you can say "yes, i know. i didn't know what happened but it was completely unmissable that something had." okay. thank you. that's very validating. but why did you leave me to suffer and keep feeling like there was no other explanation than that i was broken and going insane. would it really have been so bad to sit me down and go "i see you. i can't help much, but i can tell something happened and you're in a lot of pain. you deserve help and support. you're not going insane." or something. i don't know. my internal experience was mostly that i had suddenly become a bad child who couldn't seem to get anything right and was always being yelled at. maybe it would have helped if someone had said something.
