I just got all three issues of Butch Is Not A Dirty Word and I’m overwhelmed.

Somehow, in 2022, Tumblr University finally exists, but the only offering is a semester long English course about Dracula and everyone is enrolled
I think while we’re enjoying Dracula, we should be aware of Stoker’s heavy-handed xenophobia and ableism in the novel and hopefully that can open some critical discussions when we get to future passages.
Yes! I want everyone to enjoy this novel as thoroughly as they can, and I’m invested in making critical discussions positive and welcoming, but I hope people are ready to grapple with the explicit and implicit racism, ableism, misogyny, homophobia, colonialism, classism, and depictions of abuse that are a part of the text.
I also hope that people are ready to explore some of the ambiguities of Stoker’s portrayals insofar as they reflect a guy who is not just an archetypal Victorian patriarch and bigot--how Stoker’s Irishness, potential queerness, and complex relationships to ideas of sexual propriety seep into his work in unexpected ways.
I feel like some people might take posts like this as a call not to have fun reading Dracula, or misinterpret critical discussions as another case of holier than thou purity warriors slapping a problematic sticker on a fictional vampire, like that’s a revelation or something.
It’s not like that at all. A lot of the xenophobia, racism, misogyny, and antisemitism in Dracula is easy to miss for modern readers, and that’s a big part of what makes it worth discussing. I’ve been into Dracula for a long time, and I used to write a lot of vampire stories with Dracula tropes regurgitated and intermingled into them. Some of my stories were perpetuating things that I absolutely do not believe in or stand for, just because I was clueless and taking stuff at face value. Knowing the meaning behind your favorite stories is important, so that you don’t unintentionally mimic the worst parts of them.
Tweet reads:
Essential help needed for the SEED Trans Solidarity Fund, please do make donations. Shelters are essential services during Covid, and even more so for marginalised trans people.
The shelter has lost *everything* in the flood. Please help.

International donors, you can donate to https://www.p*yp*l.com/p*yp*lme/seedmalaysia
Malaysian donors, make your donation to CIMB 800-6999-903
Justice For Sisters is a well-respected body among the LGBT here as they really do what they can to look out for trans women. Trans women are treated quite badly here, and in the more conservative areas, besides threats to physical safety and a nigh-constant stream of abuse and ostracisation, if you are outed it’s hard to get a job that can support yourself, unless you crush that part of yourself to show you “repent” and have “gone back to being a man”.
I heard that international donors can use Wise to donate to Malaysian accounts as long as they have the bank acc, acc name and SWIFT code, so here is CIMB’s code: CIBBMYKLXXX
HELP MALAYSIANS GO THROUGH FLASH FLOODS
Several states in Malaysia are suffering through flash floods after days of endless heavy rain. Houses, apartments, vehicles, and properties alike have been submerged or destroyed, leaving the citizens with little to nothing to salvage. Some of them are stuck in highways for two days. Some of them are stranded on their roofs for more than 3 days with no food, clean water, electricity, and all the basic necessities they need to survive. Roads are closing and are disintegrating. Landslides are rampant.
Here’s what’s happening:

Instagram: (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK) (LINK)
The government has done nothing significant to help the people. The fire fighters are only making their way into affected towns after the flood has slowed down a bit, and what they found is the missing people, who did not survive this tragedy. They’re not properly equipped with this, even if some of the senators have warned about how bad this was gonna get back in 26/7/2021. (LINK)
The Malaysians are doing their best they can for others, hundreds of volunteers taking it into their own hands to send over food, clothing, diapers, menstruation pads, soap and shampoos, and all the required necessities to the effected towns in bulks by boats and trucks. They’re saving stranded animals who their owners, with a broken heart, are forced to leave them or did not have the chance to save them.
Here are what the Malaysians are doing:

#DaruratBanjir (translation: Flood Emergency) is the main hashtag on twitter that the people have used to reach out for everyone and anyone when flash floods are still on going. This is where you’ll be able to see just how disastrous everything is, just how much people are suffering. But, in the light that is the darkness, the people are doing everything they can for others, there will always be an ear or two to hear their needs and are more than happy to take action.
#KitaJagaKita (translation: We Help Us) is a hashtag for Malaysians who require help, those who want to help hands-on, or to just spread information on twitter. It’s been used since the pandemic started back in 2020, where the people have lend a helping hand to those who are in poverty and couldn’t—can’t— provide for their families, and it has also using it for the flash floods as well.
But, it’s not enough. The people are doing everything they can, and they’re not giving up. They’e still pushing through every obstacle in their paths, only exhaustion is starting to weight on them despite how hard they try to fight it. Malaysians need your help, our international friends, to participate if you can.
Here are some donations that non-Malaysians can do:
1) Mercy Malaysia
The person below can help if you have any problems with geo/legal restrictions, he’ll be the bridge for your donations.

3) Reimena Notion Site
@reimenaashelyee has done a Flood Relief Hub where Malaysian artists are coordinating donation drives for international followers to the flood relief.

4) gogetfunding.com
Ceddy Ang has set up a fundraising page for non-Malaysians. To quote him,
“I do not and will not take a single cent, I will keep everyone updated through the page. Currently capping the goal at USD $1,500 because I'm trying out this site for the first time. GoFundMe wouldn't allow a Malaysian to withdraw. :)”
Be sure to check it out!

(TWITTER THREAD)
5) Thread of local hotlines
Hanna Alkaf, the Malaysian author to 1) The Weight of Our Sky and 2) The Girl and the Ghost has done a thread of hotline services to help with the reliefs. It contains everything you need to donate and help the people. If you have a twitter account, be sure to retweet the thread to help spread awareness!

Please reblog this post to spread more awareness!!
It breaks my heart that I don’t see tumblr making an effort to help the Malaysians, we need everyone we can with this!
If you have any more fundraising links, you can just reblog and add on here.
around this time of year i see a lot of articles and op eds from muslims and non-muslims alike about what jesus means in islam and to muslims. which makes sense. there is undeniable year-round pressure to assure christians that muslims have jesus too, just in a different way, a pressure which only intensifies around christmastime.
but we also have mary. and what i often don’t see is talk of her, despite mary being one of the most important female figures in islam, despite mary being one to lead souls into paradise, despite the qur'anic story of the birth of jesus coming from a chapter named for his mother. and i think we should talk about mary more.
the qur'an tells us not just about mary as a single woman giving birth to a prophet, but as a woman who was once a little girl, who was once a surprising answered prayer from allah. mary’s parents were old and childless when her mother hannah saw a mother bird feeding her babies. the sight awakened a desire in hannah to have a child, so she prayed for a child, and as you may guess, allah granted her request and when hannah became pregnant, and her husband died before the child was born, she prayed again.
“Allah listened when a woman of the family of Imram said, ‘My Lord! I do hereby vow to you what is in my womb to be dedicated to your service.’…But when she gave birth she said, ‘My Lord! I have given birth to a female,’ and Allah knew best what she had given birth to, and the male she was thinking of was not like this female she had brought forth. ‘I have named her Mary and I commend her and her offspring to your protection from satan, the accursed.’” (3:35-36)
basically, hannah had expected a boy, and so promised that he would be raised in the service of god. so when she turned out to have a daughter, she went, “uhh, god? you gave me a girl,” and allah was like, “i know what i did,” and hannah said, “well, okay! i named her mary and i’m gonna follow through of my promise even though it’s gonna be kinda weird. please protect her and her future children.” so mary grew up in the temple under the care of the prophet zechariah.
and it was obvious that mary was blessed.
“Every time Zechariah visited her in her chamber, he found her with provisions. He said, ‘From where do you get all this, Mary?’ She replied with all conscientiousness, ‘It is from Allah. Allah provides whomsoever he wills without measure.’” (3:37)
and mary’s righteousness caused zechariah to pray for a child for himself and his wife elizabeth, despite his old age and her infertility, and the child they were blessed with was yahya, aka john the baptist, a prophet like his father.
and when an angel appeared to mary in the form of an attractive man, she immediately called out for allah to defend her from this strange man, bc women have always had reason to be afraid when finding themselves alone around men (and in one translation she says, “make him leave me alone” which i love for obvious reasons), but the angel reassured her, bringing her the message of the child she was about to conceive.
and mary did not have a joseph.
and mary went off into the desert all alone to give birth to jesus, and delivered her son under a dried up dead palm tree, and wished aloud, in her physical and emotional pain, that she had died before all this happened to her, before she would have to endure single motherhood, before she could experience the agony of labor, before she would have to cope with how her family and friends and society would treat her when she returned as a still-unmarried young woman with a baby.
and mary, hungry and dehydrated and without a support network and now with a newborn, wished that she had been utterly forgotten.
but mary would not be forgotten by allah, for after all, her mother had prayed for her protection, and for the protection of the child she had just given birth to, and allah listens to all things.
“But he called her, ‘Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the Most Merciful, so I will not speak to anyone today.’” (19:24-26)
and so mary did not have to answer to anyone who would speak out against her when she returned home with an infant, defend herself against any name she would be called, because she answered to allah alone.
and - my favorite bit of all of mary’s story - is this:
“And remember when the angels said, ‘Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above all the women of the worlds.’” […] And remember when the angels said, ‘Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings through a prophetic word from him about the birth of a son, whose name will be Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the hereafter and among those nearest to Allah.’“ (3:42, 45)
and mary was chosen twice.
and the story would not be told casting her as mary, mother of jesus. no, it was and is mary’s story. and jesus, one of the most important prophets in islam, would be called, son of mary.
and mary would not be forgotten.
tbh the apple app store 100% benefits from you blaming Tumblr and not once questioning the fact they can functionally make any rule they want about what an app on their store is allowed to have because they have a functional monopoly on like half of all phones ability to access social media

Not you defending North Korea 🤡
almost every single shocking story about North Korea you have ever read (if not all of them) was either made up wholesale or sourced from North Korean defectors. these defectors are paid ludicrous sums of money by the South Korean government for their testimony, but that cash flow gets cut off if the defector comes across as even slightly sympathetic to their home country, which obviously leads to stories that make NK look good getting buried and stories that make them look bad getting spread to American media, regardless of how obviously fake they are, since anyone who questions them is obviously a fascist apologist who wants the world to get nuked.
i’m sure you already know this since you know so much about North Korea, but the US bombed almost the entire fucking country off the map and still holds annual military drills with South Korea in preparation to do it again right on the border as an intimidation attempt. if you can be cognizant of both of these facts and still take stories about officials being fed to 120 starving dogs at face value, you might be a fucking idiot
this documentary with interviews with north korean defectors whose experiences dont fit into the american anti-dprk narrative is really worth watching. they talk about what caused them to leave, how defectors are treated in south korea, and how south korean news offers defectors money and publicity to talk negatively about the dprk
So my husband is back on his medieval warfare and tactics special interest lately, and he was telling me about how so many battles were lost because the knights would just disobey orders and break ranks because they got too excited and just went full Leroy Jenkins. Prey drive switches on and they see somebody running and they just blank out and go.
Which seemed really dumb to me, like people couldn’t be that stupid, until I got walloped in the face by a memory from freshman year of college.
It’s almost 10pm in the dead of winter right before Finals, I’m out at college in a high altitude desert in the biggest city I’ve ever been in during my life. My dorm is on the second floor of one of the newest buildings, which are still surrounded by construction zones for the other new buildings going up. Just past the construction zones is one of the city’s major roads. There is still snow on the ground outside, the sidewalks are ice and rock salt, and the parking lot is a slush pile. (All of this is relevant in a minute I swear, stay with me here.)
We get a knock at the door. One of my roomies answers it. There’s 2 creepy looking muscle dudes asking for another roommate, E. E is creeped out and doesn’t want to go see them, but they won’t leave, insisting they see her and talk to her out in the hall. My spider senses are tingling, the social anxiety override kicks in, and I go full Mom Friend and ask them who they are and how they know her. And dudes just take off for the stairwell.
And I took off after them.
I need y’all to understand that I was an asthmatic at altitude in a mountain city in winter at night in shorts and a t-shirt and no shoes whatsoever, and I somehow made it down two flights of stairs, out the door, down the sidewalk, across a construction zone, across the parking lot, and halfway to the road screaming at two beardy dudebros twice my size to “get back here you little creeps”, all before I had consciously realized that I had left my apartment. Something about watching two creepy guys run for it triggered something in me, some latent instinct to Search and Destroy. Like Fight or Flight but I wasn’t the one being threatened, they were the ones doing the Flight, and I had this deep, ferocious need to FIGHT.
I full on blanked out, y’all. I literally have no memory of getting down the stairs or across the parking lot or anything at all until I was watching the headlights on the road thinking “wait, where are my shoes?” It’s a little black hole. I was in the apartment, they took off running, and then bam, there I was. It was like an out of body experience, I was hearing myself shout at them and thinking “I sound like such an idiot right now omg,” and then I realized What I Had Done.
Not only was it stupid, it was super dangerous. Even aside from all the environmental dangers, if they were some kind of kidnappers they could totally have snatched me. And yet there I was, barefoot in the snow and road salt with no phone, no inhaler, and I was still hollering after them like a dog on a chain when one of my roommates came down in boots and a coat to drag me back inside.
And honestly? I’m still miffed I never caught the guys. That was my takeaway from that incident.
So yes, I believe it now. People are so unbelievably dumb and the prey drive instinct is absolutely real.
@shizonrhu
@we-are-knight
Thoughts? I have had a few experiences like this before, and you seem the type to enjoy this story.
Yeah, this happened. Actually contributed toward the loss for the French at Agincourt.
It also contributed to Queen Zenobia’s loss to Aurelian’s legions at the battle of Emesa. Her infantry broke part of Aurelian’s lines and continued to pursue, drawing them out of formation and into flanking position by Aurelian’s reserves.
Ancient field-warfare relied very heavily on infantry maintaining formation, as a solid wall of heavy infantry like hoplites, phlangites, or legionaries lined up with weapons and shields ready was a formidable obstacle on any battlefield. One tactic was to try to goad them into breaking formation using archers, skirmishers, and other ranged units. Even though legionaries and hoplites and similar units wore heavy armor and bore heavy shields that were largely resistant to projectiles, lighter ranged troops might be able to piss them off enough to pull them out of formation and into a trap or flanking maneuver.
The first time I ever came face to face with a bear I was having a conversation with a roommate outside our rented house in Asheville north carolina. Its head popped up over the hood of my roommates van and we looked at each other and I think I said “… that’s a bear!”
Next thing I know I’m at a full sprint in my neighbor’s yard with an axe in my hand chasing the bear into the woods and I stopped and slid like a fucking cartoon character and said out loud to myself “what the FUCK are you doing?”
I honestly don’t think I had a conscious thought until some part of my brain realized that the bear was way faster than me and I wasn’t going to be able to catch up.
Exit pursuing a bear. Legend status.
Really. So much of army stuff is just teaching people to follow commands at all times, under all conditions. Because human beings are bad at that! (So are most other creatures, so it’s not a human thing per se.) This is the reason for drill, repetitive training, development of muscle memory, strict hierarchy, and insistence that you can’t question the chain of command no matter what.
This drive is so intrinsic that “this army is inexperienced, they’ll chase us if we run” or similar ruses were FREQUENTLY used to massive tactical advantage.
This is both useful reference for my writing and an absolutely hysterical set of anecdotes, so thank you all
