This is Misty Upham.

She was a promising young Native American Actress who appeared in the Oscar Winning August: Osage County.

She was allegedly raped at the 2013 Golden Globe awards by an executive from Weinstein’s company in the men’s bathroom, WHILE A GROUP OF MEN CHEERED HER RAPIST ON.

She never came forward for fear of her career and her life. About a year later she went missing and was later found dead. It was ruled a suicide, even though the autopsy stated that the cause of death was several blunt force trauma injuries to her head and torso. Her name was not spoken at the Golden Globes that following year.

I was shocked to learn about this the story other day, and as May 5th is a National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls, I needed to share her story here.

PSA: Prep your ASM’s!

This occurred to me as I was almost hit by a car while crossing the street IN A CROSS WALK.

Prep your ASM’s.

Show them how your keys work. Which keys go to what doors. Show them how to turn on the lights. How to prep the stage. Show them your checklists and where they are.

How to run the show if you get the flu.

How to run a rehearsal if you get hit by a car.

Even though I am totally the SM who will show up to rehearsal / show if I am severely injured, have the flu (I’d wear a mask, I am not a barbarian).

Go over with them what to do if there is a fire, the show has to stop, someone dangerous is in the building. Someone has a medical emergency in the house.

All the most common “What if” situations you can think of.

Prep them.

This goes for ALL THEATERS. High school, University, Community, Professional.

I don’t care if my ASM’s have been working at that theatre for years, if they’ve worked with me before.

at one point I got called on to help kill an Absolut Mandarin bottle, and all we had for mixers/chasers was Mountain Dew. It was not optimal, but goddamn, we made sure they had that bottle for first dress that night.

Yes, but as a note: You must DECLARE AFFIRMATIVELY that you are invoking your right to remain silent!! If you just stay silent, you haven’t actually invoked the right. It’s an annoying legal thing, but you have to speak in order to stay silent. All you have to do is say “I am exercising my right to remain silent” (and then DO remain silent after that!).

‼️‼️‼️‼️ as someone who lives in a sanctuary city i cannot stress enough how important it is to spread this around!

Recently families have been torn apart because of the current american government and its actions. and often times people don’t know that they have the RIGHT to remain silent. that they DONT need to allow anyone into their home WHO DOESNT HAVE A WARRANT.

so pleasee spread this to help families stay together or to help them make the decisions they are confronted with.

‘Temporary’ Names

Vet clinics often have litters of kittens to raise. Either they’re too young for a shelter, too sickly, or the clinic intends to adopt them out when they’re big enough. Whatever the reason, nurses often end up raising kittens and giving them ‘temporary’ names.

The intention of these temporary names is that if you give the kitten a stupid name, you have something to call it other than ‘the middle black male’, but because it’s a stupid name you wont get emotionally attached and end up keeping it. Again.

Which is how some nurses end up with cats that have names like ‘Flea bus’ and ‘Trash bag’.

Out of curiousity...

Do other theatre productions make Facebook groups as a way of communicating and updating their cast and crew on what happens/will be happening during the production? This is the only way I’ve experienced it. I’ve never had the daily/weekly emails so.. Just wanted to know if other people did this too.

Some of my shows have made a Facebook page, and my most recent shows have actually used group texts.

I still send out daily calls and all important information via e-mail, but it’s fun to have an informal way to communicate. We text theater jokes and funny pictures and keep each other updated on projects even after our show has closed. It’s a great way for the cast and crew to bond
