Okay so I had a pipe burst in my house and we caught it quick, and my Dad is fixing it but I would like to be able to help if I can. Though we caught it quickly we do still have to fix the pipe, and I'm pretty sure we are going to have to replace the drywall on the wall by the hallway in the utility room. We have a heater blowing into a hole I kicked into the wall to try and prevent mildew though so well see.

I want to help because my sister and I rent this house from him and my stepmother and they only charge us $500 a month, and they have only been getting $250 for the last year because I told them I am not paying my sister's half of the rent anymore. (I did tell him I'd be happy to pay it all if I was the only adult in the house, but my sister is not making any effort to find a job or even go to therapy and I don't have the means to support her.)

“No, I did not. Because I did not want to sit there for another hour.” Even if he didn’t like having to sit and listen to the rants, he could admit that he got why Cam did it. Seeing Rodney’s reaction to statements like that was entertaining. “It’s funny, but next time warn me when your gonna try to break the brain of the smartest guy in the city so I can escape before his rants start.”

“Oh, like he’s so smart, my dad created a worm hole device, too, he’s not special!” Cam rolled his eyes. “you can also tell him that poptarts are calzones.”

“Well it’s good to know that you know basic hygiene, kid.” John told him, a slightly sarcastic edge to his voice as he started walking again. “But we don’t need some unknown diseases from some unknown planet that you might not know are swimming around inside your body getting into anyone here in Atlantis. We’ve delt with enough unknown diseases from new planets, we try to prevent it when we can.”

“Listen kid, you can trust Carson.” He opened the door to the room he’d been leading him to with a press of a button as he spoke, it had a bad at a desk as well as a room divider and a couch. Other than that it looked pretty bare and unlived in and had a window letting in light from outside, when the door slid shut again he added on.

“He hasn’t told anyone about my powers yet, of course they are marked top secret so I expect you not to either.” Mentioning he had powers was a risk, but he figured that maybe it would put the other at ease knowing that he wasn’t the only one with weird abilities in the city. “But he takes the whole patient confidentiality thing pretty seriously, and he’s probably the best person to have on your side other than Weir and me well your in the city.”

Cam still scoffed, but didn’t say anything more. It made sense - like, mom used to say there were chances of new diseases making you sick just by going over a border. Right? So a new planet, or at least, a new ‘universe’ could cause some trouble. He just didn’t like it.

Cam immediately went to the window. “I don’t see anything cool. I mean, there’s no army tanks and gas masks and you’re not blowing up from the inside, so it’s obviously not Krypton but crud. There’s nothing cool. I thought the one good thing about being tossed here would be that it’d be cool.”

He looked over his shoulder back at John. “I’ve driven one of the tanks, by the way. Every one in school has. One was busted up by my apartment building and I drove a whole block before Shane yelled at me.”

“So... you have powers? Like what?”

John turned his head to give him a look, what exactly had this kid been through that his first thought was that they were going to dissect him? Maybe Heightmeyer should be on the list after Carson. “Carson’s a doctor kid, not a mortician. Your not gonna be able to stay here for long without him insisting on a check up, last thing we need is for you to start spreading something we’ve never heard of an this city go on automatic lockdown.”

“I know how to wash my hands, what do you think you’re going to get from me?” Cam said. He stuck his tongue out and squinted his eyes with the movement. The only doctors he ever went to were the ones his mom picked, after thoroughly interviewing them. She didn’t want anything to happen, not regarding her half-alien kids. She knew what could happen.

“That doesn’t mean you should be alone, everyone needs people and everyone deserves somewhere to call home. If you need help or somewhere to stay asking or accepting it wouldn’t be such a terrible thing.” What she was saying sounded so similar to every argument Danny had made at least weekly when she’d first brought him home, trying to convince himself to leave but not wanting to.

“Everyone’s alone. Everyone ends up dying alone, I mean, unless you happen to die on a bus holding someone’s hand as you watch it crash, everyone dies alone. That’s what makes everyone the same and united,” Cam said with a shrug. “I mean if you want to buy me a burger I’ll take it, otherwise you can heck off.”

“And as entertaining as the look on Rodney’s face was as you walked away with your cereal, me and Teyla just had to listen to a 45 minute rant about cereal and soup. 45 minutes Cam. About breakfast soup.”

“Did you tell him that pop tarts are ravioli? Cause it would have made that even better.” Cam asked with a snicker. “Oh come on! It’s so funny that he could go on for that long! It’s hilarious.”

John just rolled his eyes again and started to reach out a hand to tussle the kids hair before thinking better of it and turning away. “Oh trust me kid, it’d take a lot to catch me off guard. Let’s get you to a room before Carson insists on a full check-up, can at least get you some rest before that.” He turned back to give him a smirk. “Well avoid one with a skylight, you know. Cause of the fact you definitely can’t fly.”

“No, I can’t! Mom’s going to teach me later!” Cam snapped. Mom figured out flying when she was older, like a whole adult when she caught a plane, and his brother couldn’t do anything at all. He was way too young. He couldn’t. He refused. He darted forward a few steps, making sure he was at least in line with John an not too far away from the only person he knew on the planet. “A check up? What’s he even going to look for? You can’t dissect me, I’m alive.”

Cam: What? No, I didn’t. I said thanks, man.

John: Do you see me as a father figure, Cam?

Cam: No, if anything, I see you as a bother figure, ‘cause you’re always bothering me.

Ronon: Hey! You show your father some respect!

Cam: I didn’t call him Dad!

John: I will go no where near you and wont look at you for the next week

“No.” Lies. Winn just didn’t really want to talk about it, it was better he just focus on something else instead of the overwhelming reality that he was going to have to face. “Don’t worry about it.” 

“Oh. Oh, come on,” Cam said. He didn’t know how to handle an alter-dad crying. What did mom do? “Do you want some cookies?”

Kara pressed a kiss to the top of her son’s head. “I know it’s scary, but I do think it would be safe for you to try school tomorrow. What do you think?” asked the concerned mother.

“I’m not scared of school, I’m not a baby.” Cam crossed his arms over his chest. Shane would probably be laughing at him if he heard them. “What, is Dad too busy now to keep homeschooling me?”

“I guess that tracks,” Cam grumbled. He shoved his hands in his pockets. “No, not really. Do you do stuff for fun?”
