Pictures of Black Girls...
Now I love copying a photo shoot just like the next chick....
But I do it to honor a photo, not steal from it...
Lately, black women in photography have been getting some attention...
Look familiar? Same photographer, different model.
This one is of Grace Jones, It was taken in 1985, and it still wins. Because it was a social statement. It was a nod to another image of black women that was popular in Europe generations before.
Grace's picture took that image and laughed at it. It says:Â "Look at me - I'm black --and I'm rich--! You made my people slaves?? Now, I drink champagne off my ASS. Who's laughing now?"
So now a woman of European heritage makes a replica of the replica .......
It's not, and it doesn't work. (But it does attract a crowd.....)
There's a difference between biting and honoring ...
While the new photo does confuse the racist notion that only black women are biologically able to have large butts.. (it can be purchased for those that didn't know) it doesn't remove the damaging effects of the other beliefs attached to that image.
Instead, it feeds the sensationalism that allowed this photo to survive for over 100 years.
Presenting: Black women: A freak show
Congrats Kimmie, you are now one of us... and the circus patrons throw you lots of peanuts because you're the strangest. You did it! You and the circus masters broke the Internet. Â Go 'head, make your money- someone in the circus should.
But don't be surprised that it's not considered flattery, and it's not that funny to me.
Look, we get it, Kimmie- you hang out with black people, you're rich and you have a booty. We may have liked you and you might have been cool without all of that though. The "fans" aren't laughing with you, they are laughing at you. Â
It's okay, Gurl... we know... <black girl hug>
I'm sure people will pretend to be you one day.
