omgg i said " tomorrow " and it tooke me FOURRR DAYSS !! 😭😭 this took me a bit to go over with, mainly because i have little evidence to back up my takes aside from the micro-expressions and details i noticed, so im not very confident - and although i remember i had free will - it's also just how ,, sad ,, the overall topic of cassie’s childhood is to me huhu )): ( i can't even count how many times i nearly cried rewatching a few specific episodes for this hahahahahs )
i fear this may have a lot of baggage with cassandra and it might get deep - purely because i feel so much for cass i literally tear up almost every time i see her as a baby ,, 🥹 so i definitely recommend getting into reading this with a stable headspace because this gets sooo loonggg !! 😭 and unlike D-4, i feel it's much better keeping this as one discussion instead of splitting it into two ,,

but when we do, we see she was already doing most of the chores + spending most of her time home alone back then until night !! making dinner ! at 4 years old !! )):
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : so the build up to cass' hyper-independence i mentioned before, definitely roots with mother gothel, just that it seems the captain might not have been able to soften the damage of it. ( + she started training at 6 !! )
but to be fair, it wouldn’t be easy to heal that kind of trauma response especially if cass had ended up blocking those memories subconsciously because of how much it hurt ,,
i have a feeling she doesn’t communicate very much with the captain once he took her in too, or at least, it took her a while - until she forgot about mother gothel entirely huhu ｡°(°.◜ᯅ◝°)°｡
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : on that note, cassie as a baby seems to have very limited verbal interactions )):
when she does try to talk with mother gothel, she’s often interrupted and disregarded. and it honestly aligns so much with cass’ discomfort in s2 “ rapunzel: day one “ when it comes to confrontations revolving what she feels, and she admits this in s3 “ once a handmaiden " too ,, ( ;´ - `;)
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : theres honestly so much room for possibilities, but as for what i have in mind, they're all mostly observations with what little i know of shown in the series about cassandra's childhood - but if we consider:
the risks of the captain's line of job, it's not impossible that he taught cass defense and combat in case he isn't able to, regardless if its because of late night castle duties, injuries, etc.
or that it took cass a very long time to get comfortable with him as a father, and took on the same chores she did with mother gothel until she developed the interest for combat training - to be more efficient ,,
and while it is mostly speculations on my end, " waiting in the wings " + other scenes and dialogues validates quite a lot of these possibilities too 🥲
( i talked about the dialogues in my part 2 “ cassandra vs eugene “ discussion - but waiting in the wings will be for next time ! hehe )
regardless !! all of that is a LOT for a child, in my opinion. i mean, its a lot to me and im almost 21 😭 this isnt even my life im discussing and im feeling so many emotions over it huhuhu
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : on that note, cassie definitely took on chores after having been adopted. as far as we know, she cleans around the house and prepares dinner for mother gothel.
it might have been as a way to please the captain, sure, but i think it was also to prove she was worth the effort taking in and avoid being a burden ,,
but also, it could’ve been entirely an instinct or habit she couldn’t break, with how she’s already gotten used to cleaning up after mother gothel too ,, ( ;´ - `;)
while cass says in “ cassandra vs eugene “ that the captain taught her how to “ earn her keep “ as a child - i have a feeling it wasn’t his idea entirely, but cassandra’s too, after having lived with someone like mother gothel.
perhaps he saw her being so dedicated to chores and thought she was a child with potential and thus began training her, not knowing how her life before he took her in went.
or cassie got to see how capable, important, and useful being a guard was - and wanted to be exactly that, so the whole thing with mother gothel doesn’t repeat. ( ;´ - `;)
so i fear this implies cass didnt get to play as much as a kid - especially with mother gothel - but it’s not unlikely this continued with the captain too. though he’s likely to probably have encouraged her to play before - cassie with mother gothel learned she shouldn’t ask for things, or for help, especially with what she’s capable of doing herself ,,
( even tho i think cass asking for her to wind the music box despite being able to do it herself - is purely for love and comfort. like how fake baby cass in " islands apart " wanted the captain to do her hair ,, 🥹 )
also, i mentioned before that i think one of her motivations for becoming a royal guard - is as a way to show her gratitude to the captain - to show that she wants to be just like him and to work beside him.

i say “ almost, “ because cassie doesn’t let herself cry even though she’s on the verge of breaking down.
she might not have remembered mother gothel around this time yet, but i’m sure she subconsciously remembers the pain of having been left behind by her. and we know how emotionally guarded cass is when it comes to her feelings - so aside from being uncomfy about being vulnerable, she might perceive it as a flaw, or a weakness to her competence. ｡°(°.◜ᯅ◝°)°｡
i know this episode is not focused on her childhood - but it's so important to me that the one moment she nearly breaks, she covers up with frustration and coping by trying to fix it rather than feeling her emotions ,, ( ;´ - `;)
and there’s also these from a brief convo we had at cass’ club server about cassie :

꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : aside from her hyper-independence i also mentioned how i thought cass had this fixation in earning her place and proving her worth - and aside from the trauma, it’s important to acknowledge, without criticizing, that it may be the captain wasnt being enough of a father for her.
( + we learn he holds a TON of regrets about her in s3 after all, and the fact that he wished for cassandra back when she was still 4 years old, means his regrets go way back since he adopted her ,, ( ;´ - `;) will go further on this later ! )
and i don’t mean it that the captain was an entirely bad and neglectful parent, of course. but we know cass isn’t used to:
being nurtured and communicating her distress and feelings,
+ that the captain isn’t big on “ warm and fuzzy “ as cassie mentions in the “ beginnings “
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : the captain most likely taught cass everything she knows, which has proven to be amazing with just how skilled and independent of a woman she’s grown up to be. ! but that can coexist with the flaw that cassie was just too young to have started taking on these roles ,,
and i mentioned this in my " great expotations " discussion for D-2, that i found it ironic how everything cass knows by heart now, especially in terms of combat and defense, mainly comes from the captain himself most likely. yet he is also the same person who doesn't seem to believe cassie is, although capable, he's not very confident with her being on the front lines.
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : but the thing is, i didnt elaborate on it much and so the way i wrote it by itself kind of came off as criticizing the captain - this whole discussion is my attempt at redemption arc bc i genuinely didnt intend it to be mean and biased towards him huhuhu ,, ( ;´ - `;)

꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : cass not being entrusted the position of the royal guards is, despite my choice of words at the time, in fact not a reflection of the captain’s skills - but more of his concerns toward cassie as her father.
i think it’s completely reasonable he had faith in cassandra’s capabilities ( especially when he chooses her to lead the guards against varian over eugene or other guards ) - but it may have been that he didn’t trust the way the system works - to be safe and beneficial for cass.
( and it makes sense, as i have gone over a bit before that its the bias in the system itself that is harsh to cassandra in my D-4 part 2 )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : her dad, being the captain, is more of an indirect contributing factor to that - but he’s not the highest power, of course.
+ he was eager to give her more guard assignments after her first one in “ great expectations “ - so it shows he wasn’t entirely against her being a guard !
just more of that he was worried about her - and wasn’t confident in entrusting the system with his daughter, rather than the other way around.
also, its a realistic and common worry for a parent to carry about their child “ growing up too fast “ + the difficulty of perceiving them as the capable adults they are, when they are, and always will be, their precious babies in their hearts 🥲
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : and its important to consider that cass’ fixation on her duties isnt just focused on impressing her dad - but also for her own self-validation.
he’s told her he’s proud of her in “ great expotations “ yet cass continues to carry the need to prove herself - and she backs it up by saying its because she messes up again.
it feels more like it was her own inner critique she’s having the most hard time showing she’s worthy ):
aside from the secret of mother gothel, cass never outwardly blames the captain for the way she is now - because it’s not his fault.
so my goal was definitely not to label the captain as a bad father ! he wasnt perfect, of course - but its not hard to see he had good intentions ,, 🥹 i was just too focused on the main prompt i didn't elaborate on it at the time
( and to criticize a major part of cassandra’s character would be contradictory to the purpose of empathizing with her in these studies i write ,, huhu )
in fact, the captain is one of the few parents in the series who actually tries and cares - especially if you keep in mind that cass is his adoptive daughter, and he seems to be the only parent figure present for her since then. let’s go further on that !

꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : first off, cass having taken on chores as a 4 year old with mother gothel - i feel is enough to show us that she didn’t get to have as much fun or play much during her childhood.
we do know she got to play with stuff like those tops in the “ house of yesterday’s tomorrow “ - but we also know the captain isn’t “ warm and fuzzy “ as a parent, in cass’ perspective - so maybe he got her toys to play with, but didn’t play with her actively as much 🥹
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : which is reasonable ! he’s the captain of the guards and he didn’t expect to become a parent figure suddenly. it must’ve been difficult taking on both roles, which is likely why his protective instincts as a dad constantly overlap with his standards for cass as a captain.
and it makes sense for him to have wanted to step down the captain role, so he could focus more on being a father to his daughter.
( i go further on this in the end too hehe )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : especially if we consider the fact that once he saw cass again after her betrayal, his first concern to her was to interrogate and accuse her of “ turning her back on the princess. “
not to show concern for if she's okay, or to ask what happened in cassandra's perspective, or to just comfort her.
he prioritized being a captain over being a father at the time ,,
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : and i think this was definitely the nail in the coffin for his guilt towards cassie pouring out like a dam breaking, or a reality check at least. not just because of the fact that cass now knows he intentionally kept her real mother’s identity a secret - but also the realization of exactly how much he’s neglected his own daughter to put his duty and kingdom first, all because she seemed fine and capable, and in raps' words, " put together " - and how much of that work ethic has influenced cassandra so deeply it became the structure of her self-worth until it drove her to a breaking point.
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : so while he may not have been the best and perfect father, i do think the captain was a genuinely good one - for trying and doing what he could with the other responsibilities and limitations he had at that moment. i doubt it was easy for him to let go of his captain status, but it was definitely much harder to let go of his daughter and leave her lost and angry ,, 🙁
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : he didn’t choose to stop being a captain because his daughter becoming a villain was vain to his position - but because he realized how harmful it became to cass.
he chose to prioritize actually being the father he thought he was all along, and what cass needed but couldn’t ask for nor have - even if the second chance was a delusion - it was visual proof of his true heart’s desire.
i also talked in part 2 of my “ cassandra vs eugene “ discussion about how their blunt yet silly banter towards each other is a great part of their development beyond their dynamic - and although their friendship isn't a part of cass' childhood - i really wanna go over it for a bit because they can both be considered as “ outcasts “ in their environment.
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : the details to elaborate : i say “ stretch, “ because we never got to know whether there's any citizens that are aware of cass' background, except a few guards and the captain himself who personally chased after mother gothel after she kidnapped raps.
maybe it was agreed upon to be kept a secret considering cass doesn't remember anything about mother gothel at all until s3, so it seemed she wasn't reminded either after she forgot
but knowing the guards, who's to say none of them have gossiped about it at some point ? 🥲 i mean, even little seth and the other kids know who mother gothel is. and the king and queen literally saw her steal their baby - only for their captain to return with the kidnapper’s daughter ,,
( i read about someone saying arianna and frederick knew cass longer than they knew their own daughter and im. so sad ,, ｡°(°.◜ᯅ◝°)°｡)

we get to have cass confront him directly about it but we never got an answer. but to be honest, i dont blame the captain for making that kind of choice, even if it didn't turn out well.
cassie’s self-worth and self-esteem is already so damaged just by the fact that she was - adopted.
she’s hyper-independent and fixated on proving herself worthy based on how capable and competent she is.
she’s emotionally guarded and refuses to talk about her inner conflict and feelings most of the time.
this is everything we have of cassandra so far, all before she found out about her suppressed trauma with mother gothel.
i can only imagine how much worse her self-loathing and “ debt “ could get if she grew up knowing she was the princess’ kidnapper’s daughter all along ,,

i definitely think the captain remained proud of cassandra despite her having turned to villainy. i briefly mentioned earlier that the episode “ islands apart “ in season 3 shows us that cap’s guilt towards cass goes way back from the start the moment mother gothel left her.
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : whether that was because he knew he had to keep it a secret from her or that he just genuinely felt bad for her - the fact that the captain wished for a second chance with 4 year old cassandra specifically, instead of other age or from the more recent events - to me, shows how badly he wants to start over in the exact moment he became the parent figure who stepped in for cassie.
he didnt stop caring for his daughter just because she turned evil, he just didn’t know how to reach her. maybe because he never knew how deeply cass held all that resentment, anger, and pain to herself - and that he felt deep down, if he could have done more for her as a parent - she wouldn’t have needed to end up the way she did as moon cass. ｡°(°.◜ᯅ◝°)°｡
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : so yes !! i think he’s proud of her - even if it’s just for the fact she woke up from her wrongdoings and came back to redeem herself - instead of staying astray. and maybe this might seem controversial, but letting cass go instead of punishing her, i feel was an important step to her possible character development ,, please hear me out 🥹
( because this is not to say the writing was not flawed and that cass shouldnt face consequences at all ! )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : but her entire character arc before her villain arc was already revolved around punishing herself for not being good enough. i think no one hates and punishes cassandra more than she already does with herself - so even if the kingdom “ let her off the hook “ - it’s without a doubt she’ll carry guilt over the damage she’s caused for a long time.
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : and because the captain has been an unintentional source of this punishment cass kept herself looping around - by denying her the royal guard status she desperately needed to validate herself - which then ultimately became a layer to cass constantly feeling second-best at most that then led to her villainy -
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : what i’m trying to say is, him stepping down from being the captain means he’s letting go of the loop he’s indirectly kept cass running around. and instead, he’s chosen to focus on be the father she needed all that time - to support and be by her side unconditionally, after everything has been conditional for cass.
( “ and when it came, it came with strings “ - the strings attached, is the love that comes with conditions for cass )
because even if the captain got to start over with 4 yo cass, i dont think he couldve prevented her self-loathing entirely - but i think he can minimize the damage by contributing less to it. and with his baby girl back, why should he give up on her now ? 🥹🫶
just because it took a long time, doesn’t mean it’s too late for both of them to grow and start over as individuals and as family. and so i definitely think they get much closer as father and daughter throughout their journey, even if we don’t get to see it <3

so like, you can tell they're nearly friends - but so far, still in a way that they kinda bond through their mutual annoyance by ,, ragebaiting each other ? 😭😭
not a term i usually use - but its so silly it pretty much sums it up 😭
( although while their banter is most of the time, in lighthearted spirits instead of actual malicious intent or spite - because they're the only ones having this aggressive-friendly kind of wavelength toward each other - it could be understandably overwhelming for others, like rapunzel, sometimes )
of course, as we get to see later on in the episode, they can also lock in and can actually work together when they're not messing around too ! ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶
but once again ー let's focus on cassie here ! although this episode is just as much as eugene's as it is hers hehe 🩷
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : while both eugene and cassandra, as raps says, are both kind, supportive, and considerate individuals - they're displaying absolutely 0 of those traits towards each other specifically 😭 which is honestly a valid confusion ! so oftentimes, they also get along through their mutual relationships and care towards raps ( even tho begrudgingly hahaha )
pretty much kind of similar to eugene and maximus' relationship in the original movie ? except this time, cass can level up to eugene or even one up him because of how witty and sharp she can be with her comebacks hehe (˶˃𐃷˂˶)
( whereas its more one-sided with max in a verbal sense, and more through just shoves and expressions 😭 luv him tho !! he's my son !! )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : and honestly, as much as they seem to act like they always hate each other - i feel it must be refreshing for both of them to have someone who doesn't hesitate to be honest and upfront ー but can also be reliable when it comes to what matters to both of them, especially considering their backgrounds.
this might just be me looking too much into it because we dont get to see a lot about this - but like,
eugene is literally an ex-thief, we may consider that maybe some people are still wary of trusting him.
and then we have cass, who seems to be a bit of an outcast, whether because of her personality, as the daughter of the captain - or if we stretch further - as the daughter of the princess' kidnapper - or just as an orphan in general )):
( these are just possibilities + speculations ofc ! i'll reserve the details for this in D-5 )
but the point is, i think they both are able to grow and benefit from being each other's ' critiques ' in a sense - directly communicating their flaws and conflicts that need to be brought up even if its through jabs and banters - rather than just gossiping about each other to other people !
( i like to describe them as " front-stabbers " 😭 bc they're doing it face-to-face, instead of backstabbing HAHSHAHA )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : anyways !! back to the actual episode, cassie and eugene can either share 1 braincell or fight over it aggressively - depending on the situation, mood, or certain trigger words that might tick off one of them. ( ;´ - `;)
like how they were doing well working together with the puzzles, because they shared the common goal of escaping the cell raps locked them into ー until they start arguing over the right method of using their makeshift tool to pry the cell open
- which ultimately ends up breaking into a lot of separate pieces because cass got annoyed about eugene often talking about himself - who also insists it's because cass doesn't have an interesting personality 😭
( she does ofcc !! and i love her character so much if u havent been able to tell yet 😭😭 but ofc we respect eugene is an advocate of #selflove 🫶 HAHSHAHAHA )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : and because their only way out fell down the drain thingy to the cell directly below them
( which i honestly dont understand why ? its like that ? if its supposed to act as a drain, shouldn't it go elsewhere and not the cell below it where there might be other prisoners ?? help ?? atp im just thinking its for the plot 😭 )
they end up blaming each other for getting into the whole puzzle thing - even tho they both spent equal efforts on solving it but refuse to admit it HAHAHA
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : and this is really important to me also because while they were on the verge of throwing hands - they ended up getting along again when their inmate starts poking fun at them both too - which eugene effortlessly humbles him from doing so 😭 which ended up alleviating the tension between him and cassie bc now they have a ' mutual enemy ' in the dungeon that they're both feeling smug about hehe (˶˃𐃷˂˶)
( it's like those " no one can mess with them but ME ' dynamic and eugene literally says this about cass' against andrew's evilness 😤 )
and then they kinda just chill in the cell ,, 😭 passing time with some attempts to strike up a conversation to learn a little more about each other, as raps had somewhat intended
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : in the original movie, at first it was eugene who was hesitant to open up about his past towards raps - but in this episode, we see him being the one trying to get cass to share a little bit with him too. one that directly comes from cassie in what she's willing to share 🥹
( which i thought was a really nice improvement from her secret about sneaking out together being shared by raps to eugene instead + eugene's character development from the movie being carried into the series !! )
cass actually had the room to make her call this time, and for a moment, it was working !

꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : i feel this implies that she doesn’t consider becoming a guard as a dream, but rather a set-in-stone purpose - that she might subconsciously believe is mandatory to have one, whereas dreams are a luxury, a choice.
( even tho to me, her wanting to become a royal guard, very much counts as a dream 🥹 but i'll go further on this in a bit )
" my dad taught me at a very young age to focus on the here and now. "
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : i interpret this as cass being encouraged to work on what she can do, rather than the what if's of the past or the could be's of the future.
but even then, her being focused on what she does in the present, i believe still actively contributes to her future goal.
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : it might come off confusing, but what i'm trying to say is, there is an irony to cassandra being focused on " here and now " - when she's not really fully living and enjoying what today has to offer either, with how much time she dedicates to being practical and duty-driven rather than just indulging herself in leisurely acitivities. ₍˶ ╥ ‸ ╥ ⑅₎
( sometimes she does ! but most of the time, she's dedicated to carrying the “ protector “ role in the group - especially in s2 ! )
to me, cass feels like the in-between of raps and eugene when it comes to their approach and perception of life / time :
rapunzel's character, while initially established as looking forward to the dreams she could achieve in the future - she does live the present, making the most of it, knowing yesterday nor tomorrow might not have that anymore - whether its because things have always been the same in the tower, or things have always been changing since then. if that makes sense ,, ?
whereas eugene, while he also seizes the moment and thinks ahead of his future with raps like securing their relationship through marriage - for him it loops back to his past, where he had nothing nor nobody permanent in his life. whether it's the things he didn't own that he had to steal or ended up getting stolen by others, or the times he was left to wonder who his real parents are, what they were like, or if they wanted to find him - he'd been quietly hoping for at least some closure on his past, and to heal the fear of lack of permanence that came from his childhood too.
so going back to cassandra, i feel that it creates a bit of a contradiction ー she believes she’s focusing in the present, but she's not really living it. at least, when it comes to her long term goal of becoming a royal guard. it feels more like she's ,, disassociated sometimes - ?
for the lack of a better word ? not as a diagnosis !! just to clarify huhu
( fortunately, she has new dream with her to encourage her to be silly and have fun, especially in s2 🥹 )
" he's a good man, and he taught me a lot. he showed me how to defend myself, how to take on responsibility,.. how to earn my keep. "
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : first off, i really adore how she didn't hesitate to start with highlighting a positive trait of the captain, right after eugene made a sarcastic comment about being raised by someone like him. you can tell she's really grateful to have him as a father-figure, that he's important to her and she loves him genuinely ☹️🫶
it could even maybe that her whole goal of becoming a part of the royal guard - is also a way for her to show gratitude for her dad 🥹 or a way to say " i'm grown up now, i've got this and i want to be like you " - especially when you consider she doesn't hesitate taking lead with the guards against varian when the captain wasn't in the condition to ,, she really wanted to prove she was worth putting their trust into huhuhu
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : and i actually think this may be a fixation for cassandra - earning her place and proving her worth ー not just to her dad, but even way before that with mother gothel. that her worth comes with conditions she must achieve and gain approval of.
i might elaborate on this for D-5 ! especially since it's relevant for the prompt hehe

꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : i think this circles back to cass' fixation on duty over dream, despite having a passion for combat and adventure. she chose to work towards becoming a royal guard, because it’s a major aspect of what and who raised her when no one else could.
i also believe this perspective of ‘ goal ≠ dream ‘ interconnects with her cynical and somewhat pessimistic attitude ..
Its like she perceives it as necessary, but not as part of her personality. ₍˶ ╥ ‸ ╥ ⑅₎
( or that she can't afford the luxury of having dreams unless she's first achieved the necessity of becoming a guard. am i still making sense at this point ? 😭😭 )
but it does really establish the idea that cass’ character centers around how she believes she has to earn being worthy instead of deserving it by simply existing. ( ;´ - `;)
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : and these foundations to cassandra which we learn are developed from her childhood, are only further reinforced when you compare her to how strongly she perceives eugene’s character, especially when it comes to resolving a situation, with these dialogues :
cassandra :
" you are nothing but a self-serving, inconsiderate, arrogant freeloader. "
eugene :
" i was fine to sit here eating delicious X and Y cookies until rapunzel gave up and let us out. "
cassandra :
" and that's just like you, isn't it? sit back and let things fall right into your lap. "
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : putting those two together, it suggests that cassie thinks eugene simply waits for things to go his way when he has the choice to - instead of working hard for it.
and that to her, he seems like he holds no shame for the things he receives and benefits from, regardless if he deserves or not. unapologetic about the faults he's done in the past nor the good he hasn't done to make up for it.
because how cass seems to perceive herself is the complete opposite.
even if she's not making the comparison herself, just knowing that cass tends to be in the cycle of proving she is worth taking up space - and put her beside a princess who seemingly got everything just by coming back and an ex-thief who gets everything by just being said princess' partner - ( of course, not intended to water down new dream's characters as just that ) - but the gap between them is hard to ignore, even if they're friends.
if raps can get anything without asking for it, and eugene can get anything by simply asking for it - cassandra can't even get anything at all no matter how hard she works for it. ):
these are all just analogies in comparison of cass' self-perception vs how she might perceive new dream !! not criticism against them, okay ,, i luv them all 🥹
especially after knowing how her childhood went and how many years she's still trying to achieve something that's so close yet so far - that eugene was already able to experience, and had the luxury of giving up on it because he didn't want to stick to it anymore in eugene P.I. without much risk to how hard he's worked for it - meanwhile all cass has been getting are short assignments and temporary praise that dissolves at the next inconvenience, all without a sliver of an official title, even if she does well.
also, if i was cass ? an ex-thief getting it easier than she does despite her being on the side of the system, and the said ex-thief being accepted quicker by the same system he used to run from, seems like a very hurtful slap to the face ,,
( again, not a discrimination against eugene !! just how it may look in cassandra's perspective )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : anyways !! to wrap up, fortunately they end up working together when they're both held captive by the stabbingtons - i still stand by the interpretation that they know each other well enough to be able to communicate non-verbally with signals, gestures, and expressions alone ー all the while eugene's #selflove yapping came very handy as a distraction long enough for cass to successfully knock the twins out. (˶˃𐃷˂˶)
AND ALSOOO ??? THE PART WHERE SHE SAYS " i am now " after asking if she was okay ー WHILE smiling and holding onto new dream ??? SO CUTEEE
uknighted dream has really grown on me, even if im mainly a cass stan first, cassunzel stan second hehehehe (,,♡ᵕ♡,,)

꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : if i recall correctly, it's cass' sarcastic comment about eugene that leaves him realizing that while he may have been a renowned thief as flynn rider before - now, to cass, and other people like the thugs, who may have tried to discreetly-but-very-obviously agree with cass - that eugene is basically just an ex-thief that's currently " freeloading under the benefit of his girlfriend being the princess " - and is only good at lying, cheating, and stealing 😭
( ofc this is not all there is to eugene ! he literally turned himself around and is very supportive of raps 🫶 but let's focus on cass as intended ! )
" keyword being ' was ' - and what is it that you do now ? "
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : while i don't believe cass said this to genuinely hurt eugene, as they've been having this sort of banter since TBEA - this does affect him enough to lead him to explore different jobs - and ultimately end up attempting to join the royal guards after finding his thinking-like-a-thief techniques effective against criminals of corona via outsmarting them.
( so, short recap aside bc that was necessary for my brain too hehe ー let's also go back for a bit to my " what the hair " discussion about the kind of trust cass has for eugene before going further ! )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : as we previously discussed, cassie doesnt trust eugene with topics that may be sensitive to her - whether that be her secret of sneaking raps out, or as we find out later on, anything about her personal life - and it honestly makes sense !
because as far as cass knows about eugene, he spills the things people tell him almost all the time 😭 so it's valid for cass to want to keep her cards closer to herself.
( whether eugene has no ill intent in doing so, it's just in his nature - smth he and raps kinda have in common hehe )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : so it's really important for me to highlight that cass is a subtle but effective influence to eugene's decisions and his motivation throughout this episode !
because at first, to cass, the idea of eugene - who, as far as she knew about him as flynn rider; a dishonest thief who breaks the rules to get the upper hand of a situation ( like his trick against the stabbingtons in the original movie ) - is less likely to qualify as a royal guard than a literal horse 😭 /silly
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : so unlike rapunzel, cassie still carries the stigma from flynn rider onto eugene - which makes sense and aligns to her cautious and observant character - completely different from raps’ trusting nature in which; cass doesn't play about people she considers strangers, not just eugene specifically
( this also applies to varian and lance, even if they later become part of the cast like eugene ! - and then extends to other characters like andrew, etc. )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : but the thing is, once cass got to witness eugene genuinely following the rules of the royal guards' trainings - even if the captain deliberately amped up the difficulty level for eugene specifically - she starts to realize that he is capable of doing good, of being fair, and sticking to that - cass is able to see eugene making an honest effort in being a part of the law he used to run from, to protect the people of the kingdom which he used to steal from.
( even if he keeps saying that it's just bc he'd rather be the authority, assuming they don't have rules of their own to follow, and get to look good in a uniform HAHSHAHAHHAA )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : and despite cass' earlier stigma against flynn - she isn't irrationally biased. she sees the unfairness eugene is going through, for what is most likely the exact same routine and training cass has also been practicing since she was 6 - and acknowledges that by following her sense of justice.
and while she doesn't walk up to her dad and talk to him directly about his bias , or resolve the situation in a more positive and uplifting way that rapunzel might have - she takes action in her own way ;
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : what cassie does instead, is go to eugene to motivate him indirectly, by presenting an idea in an attempt to make the situation a little more fair -
and this is the part that proves for me again, that they know each other enough to know when to take the other party seriously - because if it was someone else, i feel like the advice cass gave might not have worked as well as it did on eugene.
he read it as cass intended to deliver it, and even if it was said with a little salt - cass gave him the room to decide what he does with that piece of advice, without telling him exactly what to do. it was more like a push to get him back on his feet rather than a manual to seamlessly succeed.
she looks SOOO pretty in this scene ohmygod can she look at me like that too ,, / silly
" for someone who spent most of his life breaking the rules to get what he wants - you're having an awful lot of trouble dealing with someone who is breaking the rules to get what he wants. "
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : so even if cass says she doesn't care whether eugene gets into the position or not - she still sees his efforts and cares about the unfairness -
which i personally think this might be the moment her seemingly " general " distrust towards eugene as a person entirely ( which we see in TBEA + ' what the hair ' ) - into something more selective ー cass may not trust him with her personal details, but she trusts eugene to do good. cassandra's trust doesn't work in just black and white, basically !
( this is also reflected later on when she's the only one who gives eugene a chance to take his suspicions about the fake portrait seriously, even if she worded it in a way to make it sound like she's making fun of him hehe )
" you may be an arrogant, self-centered, inconsiderate, bloviating, tremendous waste of space windbag .. but i'm guessing you didn't become a legend by not trusting your gut.
so if you say something is not right, i might believe it ー plus, if you are wrong and fall flat on your face, i'll be the first to see it. "
+ i also like how she kind of acknowledges his skills as a thief, even if that kind of reputation + eugene himself, isnt someone she usually holds in a positive light ( separating the art from the artist fr 😭😭 / joking ) she respects that he can be capable.
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : furthermore !! cass knows that the captain, her own father, of all people ( and most likely her #1 role model ) is taking advantage of his position just for the biased reason of keeping eugene from advancing further into his short-term goal of becoming a royal guard - for the same stigma towards flynn that cass held prior as well.
and we see cass' disapproval toward this behaviour visually through her expressions too ! even max disapproves iirc 😞💔
this is not to carelessly label the captain as an entirely bad person/father tho ! he wasnt perfect, of course, he had good intentions - he's also got complexities to him that cant be categorized in just black and white hehe ( but i'll go further about him as cass' dad next time ! )
i personally thought it was unfair too, but if we consider how long the captain has been having to deal with crimes and thieves like flynn, the stabbingtons, and others more personally for years + the long search for the lost princess ー his distrust, although the execution came off a bit unprofessional and petty - it's not entirely for no reason either !
it's understandable that he'd want to be careful and set higher standards for accepting an ex-thief into his troop. ( is troop the right word ?? ) his doubts were valid !!
( i think cass may have gotten her cautiousness from her dad ,, hehehe cuties ! 🫶 )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : but yeah !! because the man who took cassie under his wing, trained her and taught her everything she knows - the man who is known to be on the side of law and order, supposed to be good - is being unfair and dishonest by cheating. she's clearly disappointed about that -
and its really valid ! because she grew up on the same rules that are being bent unfairly - which its structure she clearly values, lives, and respects as we see later on in ' challenge of the brave ' too. ( im telling you ,, this is important ! 🥹 )
also !! the captain and cass are quite similar when it comes to their shift of opinions from flynn to eugene - like father like daughter hehehe
tho ofc its understandable cass may have warmed up to eugene sooner considering they're closer in age + spend more time together + have a mutual person they value ( rapunzel ), as opposed to the captain and eugene hehe
anyways !! in the end, eugene successfully achieves the position of a royal guard, once he bends the rules to his advantage - without technically breaking it 😭 and then loses his position within a day more or less 😭😭 and still ends up getting a different position ( mentor, later captain )
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : but this is the part that is most important to me - because despite the captain's bias toward eugene, he begrudgingly accepted him to become a part of the royal guards, and even gave him a mentor/captain role afterwards ー but never cassandra.
eugene got the position way quicker than cassandra has been trying to, and while because she encouraged him to go on instead of giving up plays a major part leading up to that - so does the captain's decisions and perspective.
and the thing is, cassie was genuinely happy and proud when he successfully passed the training ! 🥹
꒰ ୨୧ ꒱ : but who knows how many tests and training cass had gone through, how many she passed but still got rejected - or how many she couldn't because it was possibly bent with the intention of making her fail ー just because the captain / her dad thinks she's " not ready yet " - when that's for cassandra herself to decide ?
it's important to keep in mind that yes, it was out of concern, but it was still unfair. those two points can coexist )):
yet cass didn't simply tolerate her dad cheating just because she hasn't achieved the same position eugene was trying for, way longer than he did ー she didn't bring him down to make herself look like the better option for the role just because he was a thief and she's the captain's daughter. she didn't ignore eugene's honest efforts just to hold onto the flynn bias she and her dad hold similarly.
she clearly empathizes with eugene, even if she doesn't spell it out. it's in her act of motivating him; she gave him support and a chance - which might not even be something she got for herself often. cassie knows exactly how it feels to give it your all and still fall short in the hands of someone else.
( because the issue is not cassie or eugene lacking the skill sets or competence at all. its the bias in the system that nobody bats an eye to. )
