as ive come back to check on things briefly ive seen a lot of people upset over the rule changes about nsfw stuff, which i get. But there are lots of places to move you work. And i havent seen a damn person mention the issue of this site being littered with underaged nudes/porn and revenge porn. Thats kind of a big deal folks. We need to protect people, tumblr isnt the only place to conduct sex work. It sucks, but so does having porn of actual minors being spread around this site constantly and at high volume.
I read somewhere that “banning adult content from tumblr to stop porn bots is like nuking a city to cure the flu.”
It’s not that people are angry over getting rid of underaged pornographic content, it’s that it also destroys part of their community and likelihood. It’s ridiculous that Tumblr’s only solution to the problem is destroying so much, rather than working to better the filter system and environment on the site. Even SFW posts, like my art history blog, is getting flagged. You can imagine how difficult this would be for artists.
I totally get that, I just find it odd that the only discussion ive seen on it (here) seems disregard this. and comparing cp to the flu is pretty poor. CP and revenge porn being spread is a huge issue and kinda more important than services people are concerned about that have platforms on a bunch of other adequate sites. I definitely feel for the people who are losing their blogs etc, i hate that and i wish they didnt have to. But if it meant cleansing the site of cp and revenge porn then in this case its worth it. I mean the filter thing is kind of just proves my point. If their filters cant even figure out how to filter nsfw stuff right and keeps flagging sfw shit, then what makes people think that their filter is going to save minors? Do I think they should allow nsfw content? yes of course. But tumblrs system and content is so fucked that it needs to be completely overhauled to work. and tbh if i owned a company i wouldnt want anything attached to my name that had cp on it of all the things, why dont people see the moral severity of this as well as grasp the legal issues surrounding it?
maybe once they figure their shit out, and create a filter system that actually works they can be convinced to bring it back. Until then as much as it sucks, it might be time to switch platforms. there are plenty of good ones whether youre an artist, general blogger or sex worker.
I’m not at all comparing CP to the flu, it’s an analogy used to explain that there’s other reasons for others’ outrage. I am not at all saying it is not important, I am saying that the way Tumblr is trying to “solve” it is lazy and hardly punishing the disturbing areas of the site it was intended for.
So far I haven’t seen many websites that live up to the same standard as blogs. It was easy to spread information and gain followers on this site, other sites like Twitter are terrible for spreading information due to word limits, and Facebook removes anything resembling a nipple. As an art blog, I’ve been thinking of making my own website as other sites have censoring issues or are impossible to relay long posts of information.
The whole point is we want Tumblr to put the effort in. So many people are leaving because of this.
I guess it really does depend on who you follow. I am surrounded with artists and not one person has complained about CP leaving, they’re worried they will lose their ability to reach a wide audience with their art. They’re angry because they feel Tumblr could be working harder at a more effective solution. They’re angry because they’ve spent years cultivating a community on this site, and they’re going to lose a big part of that community.
