Featherman + Akechi Analysis
I didn’t see anyone mention this yet?
Okay so I was playing the Featherman videogame on my NG+ (because I want more trophies as I am a slut for trophies) and I found it had a lot of…similarities to the story of P5? Maybe I just have too much Akechi on the brain, it’s possible. This is going to be a bit long so I’m going to dissect it below.
I WAS TODAY-YEARS-OLD WHEN I FOUND OUT AKECHI LEARNS “PROTECT” BEFORE “ENDURE.”
HE LITERALLY PUTS JOKER’S LIFE BEFORE HIS OWN
Do the others learn endure first?
People asking some great questions in the notes of this one so I'm going to have a bash at them. First of all, yes, everyone else learns Endure first: they learn to protect themselves before they do Joker, to put on their own oxygen masks first. They also learn these skills at a lower level.
In case you need ideas for angstfic, Futaba has her own set of abilities and never learns either, so presumably she can always hightail it out of battle in her UFO as the only survivor.
Only Akechi learns Endure and Protect out of order. Only Akechi is more concerned about saving Joker than saving himself:
It's likely that says more about the value he places on his own life—after all, he doesn't learn these two until he's already behind the door—but let's just have a look at the descriptions of those two abilities:
Protect: Chance to shield Joker from an otherwise fatal attack. Endure: Chance to withstand an otherwise fatal attack with 1 HP remaining.
Much has been made of the fact that Akechi-with-Endure appears in the true ending, while Akechi-without-Endure does not, so I won't belabour it here.
do we see akechi learn protect?
A few people are validly pointing out that he appears to learn both of these at the same time, and it does seem that way—but no, there is still an order, and it's deliberately been reversed from the order everyone else learns these two skills in—because of what he's doing.
Because I think we see Akechi learn Protect. Cognitive Akechi walks in, and Akechi turns to look at him along with the others—though he isn't shocked like they are. Akechi doesn't react until Cognitive Akechi turns to Joker and threatens him and the Phantom Thieves:
Notice that. Akechi is looking at Cogkechi like the others, until he issues his threat. And ONLY THEN does he look at Joker and go !.
It even gets a textbox, so we can't miss it. It's that important. And it's the same whether you have maxed his confidant or not. Because he's always going to sacrifice himself here—and he always did.
Game logic wise, he doesn't get the skill until rank 10, of course—the same point he learns Endure, after Joker reminds him of their rematch and gives him something to live for. But narratively? He's already behind that door. He's already made his choice. I think that moment he realises he's not prepared to let the others die matters.
Also, yes, Cogkechi's threat is explicitly and always to the whole group:
Cognitive Akechi ⋯お前らは、後だ。 ... omaera wa, ato da ...I'll deal with the rest of you later.
This is really IMO more like "you guys are next". That omaera—"you and your group"—is aimed at Joker. Cogkechi turns to him, addresses him, then turns back to Akechi.
I reckon that's the moment things really crystallise for Akechi: Joker and the rest are not getting out of this alive if he doesn't act. People ascribe all kinds of motives to his sacrifice—he just doesn't want to live, he just thinks this is the best chance of his plan still coming off, and so on and so on. No. Watch this moment. P5 is a story about friendship and the bonds we make. That's what's going on here: the kid whose loneliness led him into evil finally has someone (or several someones), and he's about to die for them.
"he sacrificed his own life in order to save you". It's right there, look.
everyone else learns protect too though, right
Deaths in game combat seem to be a bit "you passed out and ran to a Pokemon Center". I'm pretty sure any and all of the kids would die for Joker and each other, if it came up; Ryuji has a damn good go at it, at the end of Shido's Palace. But Akechi's the one whose sacrifice is the climax of his story, the moment he's forced to decide what really matters to him, the things he's lived his life by or the person (or people) he's found—and in the original P5 and both P5R confidant tracks, he chooses well.
Something I missed in this post: the PTs, of course, react with their group ! when Cognitive Akechi threatens Akechi. Who they've just gone to all that trouble to try to save—and almost succeded.
And he reacts, in turn, when they are threatened.

"Even so, Gojo's gaze, covered under the white bandages, had always, always, been staring at the shape of Geto's soul" - JJK0 Light novel (Japanese original version)
i feel like a lot don't know about this particular part in the light novel so I might as well share since I got the original Japanese version ^^ I like this part as much as their final moments. This is when Geto finished his war declaration and flew away with his family.
(including spoilers for Shibuya!)
(The thing is my country has released a translated version of the LN but its translation is very... straightforward and loses the poetic feel that the original LN has. It doesn't have the depth anymore, and even though my language (Vietnamese) has rich vocabulary, it doesn't deliver. In this case it cuts off the "soul" part, which in itself is very important considering Gojo's connection to Geto's soul is mentioned again during Shibuya incident. So I hope the official English version can do this part justice!)
I love the way this scene is described in the LN. "Gojo was also silently staring at him. In the distance, the cursed spirit (bird) flapping its wings was getting smaller [...]". It makes you... feel a lot, when you know that Gojo could very well chase after him, stop him, i mean... just anything besides standing there and staring at him. And not even saying that Geto had the students surrounded or anything - Gojo did say at the end that he trusted Geto not to do anything too much to the students and so on. The thing is, after declaring the war, Geto did mention he was gonna take his girls to eat crepes at this new shop on Takeshita street, and if that's not him showing all his cards on the deck then idk what is. He essentially sent Gojo his full address and schedule for the day lol. And Gojo did not do anything about it.
But this sentence? So much longing. So much nolstagia. The scene when he was silently staring at Geto flying away, with his covered eyes, he could only see people in curse energy, but not here: he was looking at Geto's soul with his own. When Gojo said that he could realize Kenjaku at Shibuya was not Geto because "his soul denies" his Six eyes, it has always been like this. Gojo has always looked at Geto's soul, with all his soul in return. The sentence uses the term ずっと, ずっと (zutto, zutto) - meaning always/still, underlining the state of doing something. He has always bared his all in taking Geto in, not just the appearance, not just the smell ("There is no way I will mistake the remmants of Suguru's cursed energy" - by smelling it in the movie), but also his soul. That is why Gojo can always recognize it.
(That is also why Kenjaku knew the plan to capture him could be a 100% success)
I do recommend you guys to buy the original JPese LN in case you want to make sure you don't miss any details on them! (like my case lol)
I never understood why jun wu got so angry by xie lian's heart in abyss, body in paradise sentence. It's crazy that the priest said that that apparently what was started everything.
Thanks for the question, anon!
So I think an important thing to remember here is that it’s not really Xie Lian’s line that started everything; it was the destruction of Wuyong, and the Wuyong prince’s fall and subsequent torture over the centuries.
Let’s talk about the Yi Nian ghost:
According to the legends, on the south side of the Yellow River existed a bridge called the Yi Nian Bridge, where a famous ghost wandered for many years.
This ghost was utterly terrifying—dressed in ruined armor with flames from hell following its footsteps. Its whole body was also covered in blood and pierced by numerous blades and arrows. Every step he took left behind the traces of both blood and fire. (Ch.1, Sakhyulations)
Knowing what we know about Jun Wu, this ghost certainly represents his state shortly after the fall of Wuyong, when his bridge had fallen, and when the people burned his temples and stabbed his heart into mush. This ghost, in turn, is the result of Jun Wu purging all that suffering; the ghost itself is in a state of confusion, and has made its way to another bridge, one whose name means ‘One Thought/Memory/Yearning’. This name further reflects the mental state of both ‘Jun Wu’ and that ghost:
Having been utterly destroyed by suffering, both beings have constructed themselves around that single kernel of torture.
That one memory lies at the core of both their beings (where by ‘Jun Wu’, I mean the shell of that identity; he, of course, has more beyond that, but it is too painful for him to access beyond the ‘one memory’).
And in that memory is also a yearning:
It would wander about at the foot of the bridge and stop travelers to ask them three questions:
“Where is this?”
“Who am I?”
“What will you do now?”
If one did not answer correctly, they would be completely swallowed up by the ghost in one bite.
This ghost is a crown prince who has lost all his bearings: he doesn’t know where he is, he doesn’t know who he is, and he doesn’t know what he’ll do. But he craves for all of those things: a home, an identity, and a path. When he swallows people up, it’s not necessarily because they’ve answered wrong; perhaps it is just that they have answers to those questions, and the ghost wants what they have.
Enter Xie Lian.
The golden boy of Xian Le, how smug must his face have seemed when he told that ghost that he was not in the abyss, but the human realm. And afterwards, not only did he defeat this ghost which Jun Wu had used to purge his suffering, not only did he destroy this part of him, not only did he successfully defend a bridge–
(and ah, how that must have stung, with how comparatively easy it was to protect the Yi Nian bridge, as though that could amount to anything next to the heaven-crossing bridge)
–but Xie Lian even had the bare-faced audacity to say those words:
“Body in the abyss, but heart in paradise.”
As though he knew! As though he knew anything about suffering! Anything that could happen to a heart!
Well, Jun Wu would make sure he’d know; he’d make sure Xian Le would understand that there were abysses impossible for a heart to escape, even with a body in paradise.
(Who knew that, as he attempted to do with the ghost, Xie Lian would indeed help the Wuyong prince back from his abyss, back to his own humanity. “This is the human realm,” indeed…)
@thisworldgodonlyknows also wrote some analysis on this prompt, if you’d like to read more about what those arc words mean to Xie Lian.
