in a reasonable canon, shane would simply have THEE most dependent and intimate relationship with the montreal team nutritionist. like, he has her on speed dial. they text multiple times per day. she spends 60% of her work hours adjusting meal plans for his texture issues and aversions. nobody else really sees how intense their connection is.
when he was crashing out about trading to ottawa, he said, "You know, it's just gonna be really hard to leave melissa," and hayden was sitting right there like. "melissa?? it's gonna be hard to leave MELISSA??"
but i think we can probably convince melissa to move to ottawa with him, don't worry.
okay but hudson saying that it didn't show up in the frame of the shot but that when ilya brought up marrying svetlana during the couch scene he made the choice to have shane pull his legs up some because he couldn't imagine ever wanting to touch feet with someone he's mad at makes me laugh imagining it being an ongoing tell when ilya's getting himself in trouble
they're unwinding for the day together just casually playing footsie while doing their own thing on either end of the couch and then ilya just says something in passing without thinking about it, feels shane go very still, and looks up to see shane make eye contact and slooooowly start pulling his feet away
the absolute lack of sympathy fans have towards Shane in TLG is genuinely astounding to me (and has racist undertones but that's a whole other conversation).
I understand having sympathy for Ilya, his pain is so visible and obvious, but the majority of the book is told from his point of view. It's completely biased towards his opinions on issues.
Shane's pain is not handed to you on a silver platter and it's because he's autistic. And despite that in society it's boiled down to not having social queues and being awkward and quirky, it's a lot fucking harder than that.
Shane is also in a long distance relationship, the only way he knows how Ilya is feeling is if Ilya tells him. If Ilya tells him he's okay, then Shane assumes he is, he doesn't have any visual queues to analyse or second guess. When they are together, he picks up on it, he knows something is wrong and he says something about it but Ilya is dismissive of his concerns.
But the main thing I see when it comes to the lack empathy/sympathy for Shane is his fear of being out. Shane is an extremely logical thinker (it's part of why he's so good at hockey), he knows it's safer for them to be in the closet. Ilya doesn't have American or Canadian citizenship, being out without it is extremely unsafe for Ilya as it is. Then, there's the fact that the hockey bubble is so conservative. Of course Shane is going to be scared to come out to anyone in the league, he could be (and is) completely shunned because of it. The only person who knows about hollanov is Hayden and that was ACCIDENTAL. So yes, when Ilya reveals he came out to Troy, Shane's going to be worried cause at that point in time, Troy is a homophobic stranger to him.
I've also seen people angry that in Shane's text after the plane crash he says 'I can't do this with my teammates around'? And I just think it's very obvious that he wanted to see Ilya's face and not sob and cry in front of his team? likeđ If I found out the love of my life almost DIED I would want to call them in private no matter if I'm out or not?
Anyways I just thought I'd defend Shane because the things I'm seeing are crazyyyyyyy. He was raised to be a perfect golden boy hockey player, so being gay and in love with his rival is going to make his mind trip, it's not complicated to understand. Not to mention the whole point is that his fears become reality almost instantly? That his fears turn out to be entirely reasonable? Not just him being dramatic?
Maybe the lack of understanding is because the fandom is made up of a lot of out queer ppl (or ig straight women) so they're extremely far removed from being in the closest. But I remember being terrified to come out to my friends as a teenager, let alone on a global scale. Or maybe people just hold him to a higher moral standard for... no reason in particular...
imagine a man flirting with shane by complimenting his shirt like âi like your top :)â and ilya rozanov comes in out of nowhere and goes âthank youâ
so many areas have been un-wetlanded and we need to re-wet them. if there is an area that makes a big puddle for days every time it rains everyone wants to make a channel to make the water go away faster. but actually that solution creates muddy polluted water flowing rapidly into the streams. the real solution is to dig a wide shallow pit to become a pond and make the water hang out for longer so it can become the cattails' and rushes' home. make sure to make the edges a gradual slope so the frogs can get in easily btw
I just got described as an "ad hating commie" by someone because I said a minute of youtube ads is unpleasant. fully spent 5 minutes arguing and defending youtube ads. insane stuff
a while back I reblogged a post pointing out that it's totally reasonable to have a crush on someone and just Not Act On It, Ever, At All, and I cannot stop thinking about the sweet souls in the notes who seemed baffled as to why anyone would ever want to leave a crush unspoken. absolutely fascinating life experience you must be having if that's not a possibility that's ever even cropped up, I have to say. I don't think it's unforgivably naive or anything but it does warrant further study.
okay so, guy at work, who i find out afterwards is famous at this place for being a sex pest, comes up and starts with what i also learn is his favorite opener to conversations where heâs going to be a sex pest, namely: âDo you know where the term âblow jobâ comes from?â
and here he made his first fatal error. his moment of hubristic sex pesting. because of course i know where the term blow job comes from, i love learning about sex and the history of sexual terms! i know so much about oral sex that i could write a book on it!
his second error: approaching a little autistic freak with what he intended to be an uncomfortable sex question that would make me feel weird and gross. Friends, Romans, Countrymen, I Have Never Misjudged A Manâs Intentions So Incredibly In My Life. because i did not realize he was trying to harass me. because i love talking about sex facts, albeit not usually at work. unless. someone prompts me. my coworkers are the kind of people who are generally online enough to know terms, but not exactly what they mean, and they realized they could ask me a while back and get good answers without the resulting awkwardness because i do not experience shame. i am primed to answer questions like the one he has proposed.
So I Answered It.
and well, really, what happened is that I began answering it, then realized the answer required a bit more context. I mean, you canât just say âoh, well, the term first appears in writing in the 1940sâ without first explaining that âblowâ by itself already had sexual connotations for centuries, and then, really, are we talking about the origin of the term or the origin of the act. and well we have a ton of literature and art depicting fellatio throughout human history, did you know a lot of it was men performing it on other men? oh, that reminds me, there are a multitude of latin words for oral sex performed on penises, and hold on let me quote you the entirety of catullus 16 from memory and explain itâs fascinating insights into the roman world of homosexuality-
i do not know how to turn any of this ^ off, by the way. iâm sure some people out there have a switch that disables their infodumping mid-speech. i do not. and i also didnât realize he wasnât looking for a real answer until my other coworker explained so hours later. he could not excuse himself from the conversation he started, and i made a conservative man at least 30 years older than me to listen to my catullus recitation. i will sodomize and facefuck you, indeed.
anyway, i think i got a bad grade in being sexually harassed. my pro tip is maybe donât start with what a very autistic individual will misconstrue as you earnestly asking them to explain sex to you. the special interest shield will cause splashback damage.
I do love that when the Heated Rivalryâs show runner was asked about casting queer actors to play queer characters he ignored the bait and was just straight up like âYou canât ask that. Thatâs illegal.â lmao because yeah. It is. Weird how a lot of discourse on this subject acts like this is not a factor.
The stars and creators of the wildly popular show Heated Rivalry were the centre of attention at a gala in Ottawa tonight to promote the Canadian film and TV industry.
On a red carpet for the event, Prime Minister Mark Carney got the chance to meet Hudson Williams, who plays one of the closeted professional hockey players the show centres on.Â
He was all smiles when Williams presented him with the jacket resembling the now-iconic Team Canada fleece Williams's character wears, and immediately pulled it on over his black suit.Â
Inside, Carney praised the show's creators, showrunners and stars for its reach, its Canadian roots and its 2SLGBTQ+ story, giving Tierney props for deciding to make the show in Canada after American studios had asked him to "tone it down."Â
"So Jacob did the right thing. He did the smart thing. He came home to Canada," he added.Â
"He came home to a nation that celebrates what makes us different."
I imagine Yuna as having a perfect memory, like the kind where people can recall conversations from decades past in perfect clarity.
She rolls over in the middle of the night:
Yuna: David, wake up.
David: *unintelligible noises*
Yuna: I told him to fuck Ilya in the butt.
David: *fully awake now* Excuse me??
Yuba: At lunch, back in 2009. Shane was starting his partnership with Rolex. And I told him to fuck Ilya in the butt.
David: *silence*
Yuna: You don't think-
David: No, absolutely not. You may be his manager, but he didn't sleep with Ilya because you told him to. Besides, he said they were together before that, and you didn't tell him to do that.
