Finished the trilogy. Elza is my favorite character, then Wyndgonk.

My final ratings:

Victories Greater than Death: 3.5/5

Dreams Bigger than Heartbreak: 5/5

Promises Stronger than Darkness: 4/5

Grains of salt: it has been a long time since I read YA, and even longer since I was in the age group for it. The lower rating for book 1 might have been due to my struggle to get used to the tone.

Book 2 is rated highest because of Elza. Book 3 is at a 4/5 just because of all the weight it has to carry as the epic space opera trilogy ender, and it wobbles here and there. (I kinda wish everyone's chapters were in third person. Tina stopped being the main character in Book 2.) But by god does Charlie Jane Anders bring it home.

Read it for the space wars. Read it for the genius queer teens. Read it for the hacker princesses. Read it for the artist anarchist collective and their flying shed. Read it for Xiaohou. Read it for fire and the flower of a lost love. Read it for a bit of hope for the rest of us here on Earth.
