A couple other things doctors may not tell you (maybe they did though, it depends on the doctor) based on my own personal experiences combined with some google research I did:
ADHD medications can make anxiety worse.
They can cause sleep disturbances such as sleep paralysis.
The crash as the stimulants wear off can feel a lot like depression.
There are a lot of physical side effects depending on the medication, and your doctor will likely tell you about those, but people seem to forget the mental ones.
But I have at least one unsolicited tip per mental side effect to help deal with these!
Having someone to talk to about your anxiety can help you determine how likely your fears are to be worth worrying about.
I could make a whole post on sleep paralysis. If you're on antidepressants then you likely won't have to worry about it at all, but if you're not, then staying calm and focusing on moving your fingers and toes can help break out of the paralysis. Sleep paralysis generally doesn't last long, so even if you don't manage to break out it's just a matter of waiting it out.
The stimulant-crash-depression should be temporary. If you feel like you can't wait it out, try taking a nap! Since the stimulants have worn off, you should be able to sleep, and you'll feel a lot better once you wake up.
Stimulants work a little differently for everyone, so my experiences may not match yours. I still find them more useful than not having them despite their drawbacks. Having ADHD is tough. Every little bit of help, well, helps.
Some good things to balance out the bad ones we've been talking about:
For me personally, it regulates my sleep schedule!
People in the notes/reblogs have also had some useful things to say!
