obsessed with stories where the message is that you can’t bring someone back from the dead even if you can bring someone back from the dead
guys this is a post about using storytelling to come to terms with the finality and irreversibility of death by creating fantastic worlds in which death is neither final nor irreversible and then affirming that it is anyway
best review i’ve ever written. universally applicable

the best part about wei wuxian's resurrection scene is that it happens when the audience doesn't know anything about him yet, so when he goes "i'm going to act like a deranged homosexual lunatic so no one recognizes me" you're like yeah sure that could be a feasible disguise until the flashback happens and you realize it's a terrible idea, because wei wuxian acts like a deranged homosexual lunatic all the time

honestly my advice to anyone whining about how hard it is to let go of Harry Potter. Shut the fuck up and go read some Discworld youll get your fix of goofy-ass british wizards but like its actually good and interesting and written with even a modicum of empathy
Genuine question:
There are like 97 discworld books. Is this a series that needs read in order or can one just pick up whatever one their local library has?
Like are they an overarching narrative or is it misc stories set in one world?
There isn’t exactly an overarching narrative, but there are a few multi-book series’ set within discworld, and several standalone books.
I personally got into discworld by just grabbing whatever was at the local library, maybe not the most ‘correct’ way to do it but the way the books are written makes it pretty easy to pick things up as you go along
there’s a lot of debate over where the right starting point is, most generally agree that starting with the first ones isn’t the best, but since there isnt really a ‘correct’ reading order I recommend picking one of the series’ set within Discworld:
The City Watch series is a lot of fun and has a sorta crime/mystery novel angle, if you want to start with that then read Guards! Guards!
If you wanna read about Death, (like death as in the grim reaper), that series starts with the book Mort
If you like cool funny epic witches then start with Equal Rites
If you wanna read about a conman-turned-mailman with possibly the weirdest name in literature then try Going Postal
And if you’d rather start with a standalone discworld story, I highly recommend Monstrous Regiment
There are other one-offs and series’ I haven’t named here that are also very excellent but if you’re looking for a starting point these are all solid options imo.
