I haven't seen my favorite new stormlight meme on here yet, so I present r/cremposting's new meme, Pibu
A little quite and happy moment for our Shinovar crew ✨☺️
Syl: you’re getting a flower crown! You are getting a flower crown-! AND YOU-
still thinking how ati, "the kindest among us all" turned into a sophisticatedly cruel monster just because he took ruin's shard. because he was the kindest. that's why he took it. because he was kind.
Do you remember way back in the Way of Kings where it seemed like Jasnah's and Shallan's relationship was going to be a really big part of the books? Man, do i miss those days.
Like, what do you mean they had this slowly developing relationships where Jasnah, this deeply distrusting person, finally seemed like she could actually trust someone only to end up being betrayed by this person. Someone who we have known the entire time would betray her.
Shallan finally getting this freedom she so desperately craved, to get away from her family and figuring out what she wants to do for a change, learning to like Jasnah despite her sharp edges and trusting her council. All while knowing that she would have to betray her in the end to save her family.
And when that betrayal finally comes, Jasnah doesn't hate her for it, doesn't yell or shout at her bc of it, but instead she understands she tries to help Shallan and her family by giving her the connections she needs to get out of a bad situation.
She saves one of the drawings that Shallan made of her among her most prized possessions, she stays up all night for who knows how long outside of her hospital room so that when Shallan wakes up she would be the first person to know of it. The whole time, she's blaming herself for Shallans suicide attempt, thinking it was her fault and all the horrible things ppl have said about her, how she's a heartless heretic who pushes her wards to hard, were true.
I mean, how could she not think that when the proof was right there, passed out from self-inflicted wounds, stretched out on a hospital bed in front of her.
Only for that aforementioned betrayal to happen. Her realizing that all that worrying and stressing was for not, that she was right to think that the enemy was closer than she initially thought. But she still listens to Shallan, trusts that what she said about her family is true. Jasnah, who sees assassination and betrayal at every corner, TRUSTS Shallan, saves her, makes her a part of her own family.
ALL of that only for them to barely speak a word to each other since oathbringer. Like, WHAT?? How does that even happen, i genuinely think this to be one of Brandons worst mistakes as a writer.
Finally decided to draw them again
Oathbringer sometimes reads as a Shakadolin bible. Like, what's all of this for?
let’s take this to the skies
OH MY GOSH OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH I DIDN'T KNOW I NEEDED THIS
The color palettes? The swirls of motion? The Singer armor? Leshwi's hair and beads?? Kal's eyes shifting from dark to light?? THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS?? These are masterpieces and I can just, view them, for free? WHAT??
I honestly love how Pattern acts as a sort of litmus test for Shallan's inner monologue and is our cue for whenever she's lying to herself.
Shallan, thinking: I'm hitting the bars tonight because Veil needs practice. Nothing to drain my sorrows in alcohol about
Pattern: [loud incorrect buzzer]
Shallan, thinking: Kaladin pisses me off. Besides, he has a flat ass
Pattern: [loud incorrect buzzer]
Shallan, thinking: I'm only going to Kholinar because I need a breath of fresh air. Not running away. A strategic retreat. I'm a completely stable sane individual, and my decisions are based purely on logic and what's best for me and for our mission
Pattern: [EXTREMELY LOUD AND CONCERNED INCORRECT BUZZER]
the facts:
sadeas in all of his povs talks about how much he relies on the thrill to feel any semblance of happiness. he talks about making political decisions that would lead to war and unrest specifically for the purpose of getting to fight on the battlefield and feel the thrill. he's willing to throw away his life's work, unifying alethkar, to do this. he's willing to kill dalinar, his best friend, over it. he's willing to break deathbed promises to gavilar, his other best friend, to do it. everything he does in his life, if it seems nonsensical and stupid, is for the purpose of just one opportunity to feel the thrill again. he is just as addicted to the thrill as dalinar is, it just only started causing problems once alethkar was stable and the wars became less and less naturally politically motivated
in words of radiance (and i think a little bit in the way of kings? it's been awhile) the jah keved civil war is so bad that nergaoul starts moving over there instead. people on the shattered plains are getting less and less of the thrill, its getting less and less strong, and sometimes it straight up cuts out in the middle of a battle
sadeas slowly, subtlely declines throughout the way of kings but especially during words of radiance. in terms of how, uh, coherent and justified his various schemes are. like to the point ive heard it as a complaint from fans. that in the first book sadeas is like a guy who has like an actual definitive goal in mind but in the second book hes just throwing scheme spaghetti at the wall with increasingly dramatic stakes until during his very last pov during the wor sanderlanche he and ialai are trying to put together a coup, even though sadeas doesn't even want the throne
the speculation:
sadeas is essentially going through thrill withdrawals and is trying whatever the hell he can to be able to get another fix
when he was saying all that inflammatory shit to adolin directly to his face in a way that pissed adolin off so bad that he killed sadeas, it wasn't "i can say whatever i want to this rube and he wont do anything! i can just gloat and share my evil schemes!" it was "i need a fight. i need a fight with anyone and everyone. i dont care that he's two and a half decades younger than me, i dont care that he's in his physical prime and im not, i don't care that he hates me super fucking bad and will almost certainly maim me given the chance, i need to fight someone politically important so if i win it causes more war and if i lose at least im fighting". he was being stupid on purpose because he was at rock fucking bottom
This is a great explanation for the truly inflammatory shit I forgot he said throughout Words of Radiance.
Like what reason is there to say this if your motivation isn't to start a fight by any means necessary?
you know, it's great that renarin is explicitly autistic, but it does make for very weird reading when you're reading a chapter from another character's perspective and they're acting exactly like renarin (again, textually autistic) and then you're supposed to believe that that character is not autistic. what do you mean szeth has the exact same dilemmas over making decisions for himself and telling right from wrong and being mocked by his friends, but he's not autistic? ridiculous. especially when it's one of renarin's relatives. i mean, autism is genetic, where do you think he got it from? the man with a rigid, inflexible moral code who is incapable of talking about anything without relating it back to his favourite book? surely not
Renarin: god, I wish I was neurotypical like my brother.
Adolin: hi! I was told how military hierarchy should work, decided it was dumb, and ignored that rule completely for the rest of my military career! I love weapons, so much I insisted on bringing 20 of them to a realm where we have limited carrying capacity and magic necessary to bring said weapons! I have literally fumbled every woman I ever dated because I cannot pretend to be interested in their interest, and struggle to prioritise time with them! One time I bought a girl a sword and then talked about swords to her for an hour! I prefer duels to most other forms of communication!
For the Stormlight butches, first up we have Radiant! I still have to share Cord and Eshonai, so keep an eye for them as well!
i love how many -ation words there are because they all rhyme with crustacean. crustacean fascination. crustacean desolation. crustacean sensation. crustacean adoration. this is what stormlight is all about i think
I think Rhythm of War is my favorite Stormlight book but man. Oathbringer has so may moments that just stick with me.
Moments that live rent free in my brain, in no particular order:
Veil basically being like "yes I would like to buy an alcohol" and then chugging horneater white. then when someone puts a hand on hers she stabs them through both their hands
"he's learning to read? isn't that kinda... feminine?" "Drehy you are literally courting another man" "and? what does that have to do with it" "yeah don't be homophobic Kal ://"
Kaladin being unable to think about sex without imagining Syl giving him pointers and being so disturbed by it that when someone asks what's wrong he passes it off as reliving a traumatic memory
no mating!!!
"what'd you do, punch a lighteyes?" "yes" *punches the brightlord*
Shallan doing the family guy death pose and flashing everyone for science
Shallan getting stabbed through the chest and Kaladin frantically trying to tear her shirt off without thinking to see where the blood was coming from because he forgot about tits existing
Adolin managing to acquire a nice outfit in Shadesmar and Kaladin's complete bafflement
Dalinar: Adolin, I am putting you in charge of finding who killed that guy. Adolin, who killed that guy: what
Shallan: another murder done exactly the same way! the murderer must've struck again! Adolin, who did not kill this one: what
Lift just appearing in visions when Dalinar tried to talk to Yanagawn and talking about his butt
the Assassin in White joining the final battle and everyone just going okay this might as well happen. everything about this is already so damn weird
Dalinar's solution to EVERYTHING being challenge someone to a fight. this is how everyone communicates they engage in combat. what better strategy could there be than making it clear to someone that I could destroy them by force at any time it worked great on my nephew
young Dalinar walking out into the highstorm to get his knife, stabbing an assassin with it, then rinsing it off in his wine and using it to cut his meat
"stormfather!" "what?" "that was a curse"
a huge part of what makes stormlight archive interesting is the worldbuilding so i feel like it has minimal potential for any non-canonverse fic AUs, EXCEPT for crack AUs cuz I KNOW that modern universe Kaladin and Moash would have met while Kaladin was leading the charge to unionize their Amazon warehouse and afterwards Kaladin would be like "now I'm gonna open a community-funded urgent care" and Moash would lay a hand on his shoulder and stare into his eyes and be like listen Kal. hear me out. what if we assassinated Jeff Bezos instead
Spellcheck.
Thank you.
Reading The Way of Kings is really funny so far because you go from reading about Kaladin and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day(s) to Shallan and her sailor buddy Yalb's wacky book-buying adventure back to Kaladin about to fucking kill himself.
