read literature in your first language! learn about your country's literary history! read those sentences and memorize new words you didn't know yet! find an author you like and explore their work! explore the modern literary scene in your country! visit a local bookshop and ask for recommendations in your own language! refuse to let the english language trample over linguistic diversity! stop acting like it's too hard! just START!
reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
@dragonpyre any chance you could elaborate on this
I grew up learning about land formations. Seeing fictional maps that don’t follow the logic and science of them makes me upset
What are the most common sins you’ve seen relating to this? I wanna know
Mordor.
Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like it’s from a shield. If it’s hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.
And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isn’t there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!
So what is a rain shadow?
Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.
Oh yeah nothing is more annoying than fantasy maps that can't get mountains, rivers and rain shadows right.
May I recommend my new favorite tool: Mapgen4. You start with a random seed and then add mountains, valleys, shallow water, or oceans as you like. You can adjust the wind direction to make wind shadows off the mountains fall where you want. You can adjust overall raininess to make the rivers larger or smaller, or have more or fewer tributaries. It works best for small, isolated landmasses (think islands more than continents) but as there’s no scale bar and it’s all slightly abstracted anyway you can do whatever you want with it. I’ve only just started playing with it but it’s SO FUN.
Look. I don't necessarily believe that you should focus on this when you're writing. Your world only needs to be as fleshed out as necessary to tell your story, the rest can be filled in later by other stories or by the reader's imagination.
But if you feel the compulsion... All that.
From facebook; mic drop.
So that last line punched me in the face so hard I hit the reblog button. Oh well.
In the spirit of Halloween, due to my own experiences as of an hour ago, I have come up with a new horror video game.
Because of the low atmospheric pressure, two things have happened: my blood pressure levels are somewhere in the vicinity of my ass, and there is. Fog. Fucking. Everywhere. The kind of weather only Jack the Ripper could enjoy.
No sane person would go outside. Except the people who still have to walk their dogs.
(This was when the fog was actually still traversable and I theoretically still knew where I was. The moment you hit a less lit area, you're toast)
So the game would be first person POV, and you get lost in your own fucking neighborhood. Your only guide is your scaredy-cat of an idiot dog, and you know you can't let go of the leash for even a second because you're not going to see the damn dog ever again. Which is also bad because the dog is the only creature around who knows how to get home.
So you're feeling sleepy and headachy and yet somehow have the anxiety levels of someone being hunted for sport, your dog who is the only one who knows how to get home keeps jumping at shadows. You wonder if that's because he can hear things you can't in the dark.
Suddenly you see the fucking grim reaper approaching on a fucking skateboard. You nearly piss yourself, only for the geim reaper to pass you by, whirling fog around him, then reveal it's actually a kid on a bike with his friend standing on the seat behind him. You're vaguely happy you didn't actually scream.
But the next monster you see? Might not be kids.
So you better hold that leash tight and hope the dog can get you home before you're both eaten.
Happy Halloween. If you need me, please leave a message and I'll get back to you when I get out of the damn fog.
...so in other news, I may be stupid.
Be right back.
...
...so what if I did. What else was there to do

Y'know I'm not sure that those "I love the way men love" posts are really much different than someone admiring a goldfish struggling to survive even 5% of its expected lifetime in a tiny glass bowl.
Sounds like some juicy discourse. Elaborate.
I did a bit already in the notes but I guess I can probably find more to say than
We taught this thing that it's not allowed to show emotion without punishment, so it has to tangle itself into subtle contradictions to give love and receive affection!
Basically I see a lot of these posts where some taciturn father or uncle or grandfather who never shares much with his family is revealed to be secretly listening to all of his daughter's soccer games on the radio, or making sure his grandkids' cars are functioning, or keeping some heirloom or love letters from a long-lost lover who died tragically before he married the woman he had kids with, or something like that.
And this is always presented as something endearing, but I think it's actually rather upsetting! It's a bit like those news stories about how, e.g. "This whole town pitched in to make sure this fifth-grader could afford the surgery he needed to live" where the real tragedy is that the problem existed in the first place. Children (and adults) should be able to access the medical care they need without a whole town coming together to pity them, and men should have ways to show the love that they have for others that doesn't have to be discovered by whoever goes through their estate after the funeral.
I think this is a form of trauma, where men are "socialized" in a way that punishes them for showing genuine emotion, and so they learn not to do that, but they still feel those emotions and want to express them, and so they struggle to find an outlet for them that won't result in them being ostracized or dehumanized by the very people that they feel those emotions for. Which results in doing things that no one else ever really notices unless they look very closely.
And I'm saying this all as someone on the outside looking in, I never felt personally felt this way growing up because I didn't care about these punishments, who cares if people don't see me as a man (I didn't want them to) or if they think I'm a faggot (I am, after all...). But there's no reason that showing emotion needs to be tied to either of these things, and it plainly looks like other people are suffering as a result, so we should figure out how to make this not be the case.
I feel somewhat obligated after venting this much to tie this up with some nice conclusion about what people should do about this, but unfortunately I don't really have one. I think a lot of this sort of damage is hard to undo, and probably at a certain point it starts to be more self-inflicted. Maybe I just wish people would approach the matter with a little more gravity than "Isn't this cute"? idk.
Hi. I'm the person who asked for help with the enemy of the week type thing. I was wondering if you could explain the different types of writting? (fanfic, novella, all that stuff)

Does anybody remember playing these games as a kid?
YEah dude! These are classics of my childhood!
I was 10 when my uncle gave me a bunch of discs in one of them big old black cases with lots of sleeves as a birthday present, and I never imagined how much fun I would have playing lots of those games.
They only had their name scribbled with a black marker (not the one specifically for CDs either) and most of them were not able to be played on my playstation (I later learned my uncle had in fact bought them in bulk to gift to us nephews, but none of my cousins had a PS1 and he didn't know that, so he gave them all to me).
Given that they did not have their original cases, my mother (who was usually very strict on what we were allowed to play, never bought me any of the GTAs or the Saint's Row) did not check their PEGI rating (the European equivalent of the ESRB).
I loved the opening cutscene of Home Intruder: it showed the perspective of one of two burglars trying to get around a house with flashlights and stuff, trying to stay silent. The house was kinda like a mix between a ancient colonial home with a white albeit dirty porch and Dorothy's house in the middle of Kansas with corn fields and farming tools all over.
After like 30ish seconds of them looking for a key under rocks and stuff, the one you're looking through the eyes of finally has enough and gets in by essentially picking the lock very aggressively, raking I'd imagine from the sound, and after opening the door he looks behind him but doesn't see his partner anymore.
After calling faintly his name (or what I assume was his name, since he sounded like he was speaking a language different than english), he gets in without waiting for him, and begins looking around, quietly opening drawers and stuffing a backpack with things laying around. It was kind of well done, for a game I assume was not from a well known studio. I distinctly remember the reflection of the thief in a mirror right by the entrance of the house, which was in line with PS1 graphics, but still, impressive. Silent Hill-bathroom vibes.
After picking up a standing chandelier (which could have been a menorah, now that I think about it; as a child, I did not have any way to recognize it), the thief looked out the window only to see his friend hanging by the neck from a tree outside, but not hung: something must have had thrown him at full speed towards a pointy branch, causing his neck to be fully trapassed by the wood. I remember the first time I watched the cutscene, I rushed to the door to close it, so that my parents would not see it and take away the game!
Anyway, the cutscene kind of ended there. The thief rushed to the door, bolting it shut. Someone rings the doorbells, the thief shouts something in the same strange language as before, and the starting menu appears, with a scary jingle blending kinda badly with the scream and the sound of someone trying to pry open the door.
I really would have liked to play this game, but in order to make a save the game asked you your address (to make it more personal, I guess), and your name in order to put it on the buzzer. It was the time where my parents were drilling into my brain "NEVER GIVE STRANGERS ON THE INTERNET NAME, AGE, ADDRESS AND TELEPHONE NUMBERS!!!", and the lines between internet and a silly game on my PS1 were kinda blurred in my preadolescent brain. I didn't want to risk them getting angry, and tbh I didn't want to risk someone mailing something to my doorstep.
