{Blood in the Water || Katarin & The Goddess @the-scavenger-writes}
Katarin watched her feet, disappearing silently beneath the river’s edge. The water and ice kissing her skin in a fleeting caress of bitter cold before swimming away, their edges rounded and made soft in the water.
The soldier held fast, eyes narrowed and something like defiance smouldering tight behind her gaze. She was terrified, the sight of naked skin in the cold electrifying her fear into something animal and base. She was focused, and vacant, until the goddess was in against her danger danger danger.
She whimpered, flailing an arm out to guard herself, to catch herself, to steady her position. In the wet she’d long since stopped shivering and she knew that was a dangerous thing but the beautiful creature before her, touching her, was more dangerous by far and a part of her knew it better than her pride would allow.
The crooning words were embarassing, the heat of her hand, the cool of the water she’d pressed to her skin, into her body, and the quaking rush of healing were enough to bring Katarin back to her senses and she gasped, clutching Tia by the arm tightly, “All better,” she echoed through gritted teeth shoving her way to her feet, away from the gentle searching fingers, away from the warm and cloying shame building at the touch.
Katarin stumbled to the shore, grabbing for her weapon and swiping it through the water with little grace, her body returning to itself in fitful spasms against the cold. She barely registered the offer, another favour, another debt, but she growled against it anyway, tightening her jaw to keep the shake of her shivering from her voice, “They will pay. I don’t need someone else to fight my battles for me. They just…” she paused, what did they just? This wasn’t the first time she’d had to prove herself against her own arrogance. It wasn’t the first time she’d bled to make a point. At what point would they be satisfied with what she could do, with what she offered to the squadron? At what point would they pay?
“I shouldn’t make deals… I won’t be trapped by more favours.”
Tia’s black eyes sparked at the young woman’s reaction, recognizing the way her skin flushed from more than cold, how her eyes took on a sheen of embarrassment and shame from such a simple touch, how she hastily moved to get away from Tia.
As… suggestive as Tia could be with touch alone, she hadn’t expected this young one to respond to it so well. She was probably touch starved, lonely, in need of guidance and praise. All of which Tia could give.
She watched as the young woman made her way to shore, shivering and breathing harsh clouds of white into the air with her voice tight as she vehemently promised they all would pay like Tia wouldn’t believe her.
“Oh, no, sweetling, this wouldn’t be a debt. This is a gift.” She easily made her way out of the water to join the other woman on the shore, wrapping her cloak tightly around herself as she went on, “I don’t appreciate people, especially men, who go out of their way to prove a point through violence. I don’t like that they think it is appropriate to hurt you like this to prove a point. All women are under my protection,” she went on, putting a finger under the other woman’s chin, “whether you are mine or no. So I offer you my help, if you would like, to teach them to think twice in any decision they make.” Her eyes leisurely roamed her face, looking for that crack she could slip into. Though she told the truth, it was a gift, she wanted nothing back for any help she would ask of the goddess, but she wanted this young woman. She wanted her to bend the knee, to pledge her life, she wanted to take her for her own and mold her to her full potential and then some.
“Let me help you,” she murmured. “We’ll make them sorry.”
Blood swirled beneath her fingers, she could see it, could taste it in the echoes of pain in her mouth, over her tongue, behind her teeth; trapped and raging. Blood swirled and the blade came clean and fingers touched beneath her jaw like a promise.
Like a threat.
There was something tempting in the offer, the fae are always tempting, her mind supplied and she flinched again, pulling in on herself and tucking her blade in tight to her side waiting for the shock and ache of what had recently been an open wound and finding the smooth chill of new skin disturbing. Power. Why have the gods never given me such power?
Katarin turned her eyes down and wiped the water from her blade in calculated motions, slow and careful. Stalling. She had ideas of what she would want from her revenge, what she wanted from seeing the boys who took advantage of her stature to make her mad and blind with hatred. But it couldn’t be obvious, couldn’t rise suspiscion and draw attention to her own hands.
She didn’t want their blood, not the way they hungered for hers. She didn’t want their embarassment, not the way they craved hers. She wanted their ruin. Ruin in a way that would haunt them for the rest of their lives. A ruin that would make her right.
She wanted to explain, the words stilted and raw before gaining speed, “I want to make them scared. Not of me. Scared somewhere deeper. I want them sorry they’ve ever touched a weapon that they ever touched me. Torm be that they’ve ever looked at another girl the way they talk. I... I don’t want them to ever be able to think because of their fear. I want to- I want them to-” she paused, sucking in a breath and steadying. “I want to make them weak. Can you do that?”
faith is not soft, the gentle thrum of a hummingbird’s wings: it is the gale on which the eagle rides. to be loyal is a promise to bleed, to break through the earth with broken nails until you find the heart you’ve left in stone. we hold our honor in pointed teeth.

Katarin’s mind blanked, hot seeping panic filling every bit of of her mind with a scalding trickle of fear fear fear. She couldn’t offer her name. Of all her training it was the only thing she knew for certain, never offer your name to the fae, to the fiend, to the things that stalk in the quiet deep and dark. She flinched, hissing through those still gritted teeth and trying to stay upright.
“Kay,” she yelped at last, finding balance and something tenuous as hope in landing on an answer.
The fear turned cold and brittle at the favour; debt was not an easy thing to climb out from under. It gripped her tight. The swarming blankness of blood loss was cloying and deep at the edges of her vision.
She nodded, desperate, “A favor. Equal in measure. Nothing more,” and worked her numb legs beneath her to stand. “Do you have something you go by? I can’t imagine you’d offer a true name in passing.”

{Blood in the Water ||Katarin & The Goddess @the-scavenger-writes}
Katain floundered, the words of protest, of upheaval- argument- dying on her lips before they could be formed. This woman knew about her. And that fact alone unsettled Katarin more than being interrupted.
There were things in the woods, pretty things, with enticing looks, and strange garb, and hair, neatly locked in a way Katarin had only seen in dreams...
She hissed out a hissing yowl of protest as the woman stepped closer, her chin tilted up and teeth bared. “I don’t need your help.” But her vision swam, her fingers clutching into her skin as if to hold her attention, maybe to tenuously hold her up. Katarin reached back, her weight settling down into the water and her free hand catching at the smooth stones beneath the surface. “I could, maybe, appreciate it though.”
The soldier ducked her head, gritting her teeth against the nausea of moving and growling, “What’s your price, Witch? I’m not green enough to think there isn’t one.”

“Fairy tales are more than moral lessons and time capsules for cultural commentary; they are natural law. The child raised on folklore will quickly learn the rules of crossroads and lakes, mirrors and mushroom rings. They’ll never eat or drink of a strange harvest or insult an old woman or fritter away their name as though there’s no power in it. They’ll never underestimate the youngest son or touch anyone’s hairpin or rosebush or bed without asking, and their steps through the woods will be light and unpresumptuous. Little ones who seek out fairy tales are taught to be shrewd and courteous citizens of the seen world, just in case the unseen one ever bleeds over.”
