Katherine + typhoid fever
Oh. oh.
Katherine has a complicated history with typhoid. She and her older sister contracted in in Fall of 1897 (she was 16). They were both on the verge of death for four months. At Christmas that year, Katherine was beginning to make a rebound; while her sister made a turn for the worst, dying a week later. Katherine lives with survivor’s guilt because she was the one who fell ill first (even though she in no way caused her sister’s illness).
Unfortunately, Katherine was struck with typhoid once more in her young life, a mere two months after the Newsies Strike. This experience, however, was much different. She had no complications with the illness, making her able to recover in the standard one month’s time. Instead of Bill and Darcy being her only visitors, she had a cheeky newsboy sneaking by her window every afternoon (she wouldn’t let him in for a while for fear of him getting sick though, but he gives up that notion in about 3 days). And in the words of Davey: “Nobody died.”
