So yeah when I first came here I didn't know this was a thing so I've been working on this in the background. Now that it won the poll, I'm making it now!

I'm an educator by heart so I love giving feedback, know a lot about kids, and of course education psychology and theory

I have minor scoliosis, chronic nerve pain my hands, and chronic headaches and migraine attacks in control with medication if anyone needs to ask me about these experiences for writing purposes. I also occasionally use a cane due to knee pain from an injury.

Good News and Update!

Hello, all!

Although I have been inactive for a while, I would like to share some great news with you.

About a month ago, my short story, Learning to Look Back, was given an honorable mention in a writing contest.

I am beyond thrilled for this. If you don't know, I've submitted to this competition before, and LTLB did not get any honor. I revised, and now I'm featured on the list.

I want to keep submitting LTLB to other contests. No specific plans at the moment, but I will soon be posting calling for beta readers to make this even better. Be on the lookout if you're interested!

The Blog and Me

I have no plans to become regular on this blog any time soon as I get my life together, but I will come back whenever I have a larger writing update.

That being said, this community has been invaluable for me. The tag games motivated me to deep dive on specifics I never considered. Beta readers have helped me deeply think about my writing craft. I would never trade the time I had here for the world.

The reason I had to step away was for mental health. I'm doing better now, but I'm focused on other things outside of this site. I do believe in stepping away I have helped myself. I was worried about the wrong things, obsessed over notes, and tried very very hard to be a loyal member of the community by responding to every single tag. It eventually started to become an obligation instead of the fun it should have been.

I do want to come back, but it won't be like it used to be. I simply have other priorities, but I hope to get to the point in my life in which I am able to be more active without sacrifice. I miss you guys.

The Secret Portal... Draft Six

I am preparing for a massive overhaul of TSP. Thanks to many people's feedback and a lot of thinking for myself, I am slowly workshopping the following aspects:

Perspective. I have too many heads to hop across. It has become too much. Despite its 13 years as such, TSP will be converted to being in third person. I need to keep the perspective of the characters without confusing my readers on who "I" is pertaining to.

World building. I want Alium to be alive. I need to know every aspect of it. The science of the powers, the religions built around it, the creatures, the customs, the architecture, the holidays, the geography.... I'm not going to Tolkien it, but I will be ensuring that the world feels distinct and alive.

Occam's razor. Kinda with world building, but I have so many things that are way too complicated for no reason. Enough of that! I'm making it simple. Even if I have to abandon ideas. It's ridiculous.

Focus. I need to have my installments have a plot. Not that they don't have a plot, but they don't have ONE plot. I need to interweave the storylines and character arcs to be focused so the individual book feels like it's actually building to something. I feel like too much is going on but nothing is going on. Maybe that's overly critical, but it's how I feel.

Let it be clear: the core of what TSP is will NOT be changing. I love this series more than anyone on this planet does. But I need to let my baby grow without taking it so damn personally. If I am not satisfied with it, then I should change it! It's making me feel better knowing I'm doing it for myself and my audience. TSP has been held back for too long by my own stubbornness against change. It's time to take the training wheels off.

Writing Update

Hey y'all! I know I've been inactive. It's 100% been for mental health reasons. I'm doing really well. First semester of grad school ended, and I'm loving my tutoring job. Still in the process of getting my life together.

I've still been writing when I can. Let's go into that.

TSP Update

I've been thinking about the next draft for TSP. I have several ideas to make it more cohesive and easier to follow, but I know I have to do a lot of behind the scenes work. I'm working on developing Alium. I've done deep focus periods in the world building before, but most of it is just "make it up as I go" and that's been fine, but now I want to be sure of this world. I want to make it more alive, more concrete.

The first thing I'm focusing on is the Alii Power Database. I'm almost done with the basics of it, which I thought would never happen. I've found more efficient ways to work on it, which has been turning out so well. I've many things to do to make it complete, but I feel like it's feasible now. Once I have the powers down, the main schtick of Alium, I'll be able to do a lot more.

I'm excited for what TSP has in store. I'll keep y'all updated on how the database goes!

LTLB Update

Back in September, I submitted my novelette into a contest, and unfortunately it went nowhere. I got automatic general feedback, and I'm trying this contest one more time. It's due by the end of the month.

If the contest goes nowhere again, I'll go somewhere else. I really want LTLB to at least win one contest.

However, I do want feedback. I have a few people IRL who have promised to read through it and help. I was wondering if any of y'all are interested in a last-minute beta read. If not, I'll get LTLB ready after the New Year if I need to look for another contest (basically, if this one doesn't work again).

TSP Update

Hey y'all.

Things are going okay, actually. Sorry I haven't updated in a bit; I don't know if I'll ever be back to daily posting. Thank you so much to anyone who gave me world building advice; I have the post saved.

So, I've been thinking a lot about TSP. Around the time I made the world building post, I had a little depressive spiral about all of its flaws, and I felt like I could never get TSP fixed. Then I had a thought I'd never thought about TSP before, in the 12+ years since I've had the idea: "give up."

It was a haunting and terrible thought. I've poured so much time and effort into it. I love it, and I want to make it as good as it can be. But it was so overwhelming, I didn't know where to start.

So I decided with world building. Then I started doing some of that off and on.

I've thought more and more about what needs to change, and I don't think I'll be starting a Draft Six until it's a little clearer.

So the following are the directions I'll be focusing on before Draft Six begins:

World build! Figure out the power system, religions, celebrations, animals, etc to make Alium feel alive! And man, I gotta utilize Occam's razor.

Perspectives. I have a lot of first person narrators, and while I tried very hard to make everyone distinct, I realized I was going to either need to switch to third person or do something creative. I've decided on the latter, though idk how it will turn out.

Conflict. What a mess. I keep trying to make it work, but it needs an overhaul.

Themes. I have series long themes that need to be developed in Part One. I need to be very firm on these for cohension's sake.

Plot. Yeah, there's an overarching plot and TSP is episodic by nature, but I know it gets meandering off. I need a focus, or a couple, to make it feel cohesive.

Idk how long this will take. Feels like forever; I won't have a lot of motivation for a while, but thinking about TSP in a positive light for the first time in months is actually so refreshing.

World building help?

Hey y'all quick update

It's been a while. I've been really busy with grad school and tutoring. I'm happy in my job and I'm doing a lot better mentally, especially now that I started medication for my anxiety.

I haven't had a lot of time or motivation for writing. But I want to do some background stuff whenever I do.

I want to make my world Alium better, more alive. But honestly I was making stuff up as I went along. World building has never been my strong suit.

So I'm asking for help, fantasy writing community. How do you get your world alive? How did you just make stuff up? Where did you learn? How do you get inspiration?

Worst Writing Advice I've Heard

Show, don't tell (you're supposed to show AND tell)

Your chapter 1 is really important (it's not if you never get past it)

First person is the worst pov (ANY pov can be terrible, it all comes down to how you write it)

You have to be published to be a writer (straight up bullshit)

Real writers write every day (yeah and so do the ones who get burned out and stressed a lot)

Kill your darlings (ALWAYS MISUSED. it means remove anything that doesn't serve the story, even if it's Shakespeare level writing)

Your main character has to be likeable (No, they have to be interesting. That's good enough for me)

Read a lot (debatable. Personally, I read a lot more when I was younger than I do now. Don't only read, consume different mediums like movies or shows. They're stories too)

Writers' Block isn't real (Ummmm....)

Never use X word in your book (also straight up bullshit. Do the fuck you want. That's what editing is for)

Your first draft will be 'terrible' (I believe your first draft will be messy. Not everyones rough draft is terrible)

Learning to Look Back

So I've mentioned my unnamed short story on here before but this has turned into a novelette. It has a title now!

Basics

LTLB is a speculative novelette with elements related to time.

Small cast, focus on two characters

Installment of potential stories of similar length

POC and female representation

Third person, mixed with past and present tense

Themes of learning from experiences and relying on others

About

Ranjana is a chronosian, an inorganic sentient cosmic being who exists in a pocket dimension outside of time. Some members of her people monitor time to ensure the timeline remains healthy and on track.

Tiffany Isaac is a human scientist working on her own time machine that inadvertently begins to poison time, so Ranjana enters the timeline in order to prevent the disaster.

The two must work together in order to stop time from unraveling.

LTLB is primarily a drama.

Where Am I?

I'm almost done with the first draft! I have a better sense of where the story is going and plan to make this draft focus on character work and themes, which I kind of just improvised.

I have an old draft from high school that functions as a prequel. I may adapt it later.

I hope to make installments set in this universe in the future.

Writing update :

Technically, I should've made that post yesterday.

I first organised all my scenes and chapters, everything seems tidier and makes more sense now lol. Though, I think I need more scenes to tie it all together (for pacing reasons).

I then reworked chapter 2 with 3rd person and added some words, I'll have to check it again because yesterday I was getting tired around the end of the chap so I'll have to change some stuff. But I went from 1,3k words to almost 2k so I'm happy about that !

I also added new chapters with... a certain POV 👀 I'm really excited about that !

Writing Share

This isn't from a tag but i felt like I could share something that I really like !

His mother, a lady in her mature years but nevertheless a young mom, stands in the doorway, a cigarette between her index and middle fingers. She rests it against her lips as a cloud of smoke escapes from her nostrils. Noe pinches his nose; this crap gives him terrible headaches, and the smell lingers in every room of the house.

Writing Update

While I haven't written much of my main WIPs, I've done a lot of behind the scenes work and am actually writing a new project!

Let's go through these.

The Secret Portal

Well what I'm currently doing is sprucing up my planning documents. I have far too many and I'm in the process of cleaning up the mess. More specifically, I'm organizing all the notes for each character into sub-headings to make navigation easier for myself, and am going through an old document that still uses some characters' previous names and transferring any information that I didn't write down somewhere. Sounds more complicated than it is probably hahaha.... I'm just not naturally organized but I crave organization. Almost done with it though. Afterwards I'll read through @diabolical-blue's beta reading comments and revise/make notes for later depending on the comment. Looking forward to it honestly.

School of the Legends

Reading through fairy tales for inspiration. Simultaneously it's awesome and sucks ass. Fairy tales are low-key kind of boring with the most insane concepts ever. It's part of why I find fairy tale retellings and expansions so fascinating. I am enjoying it, honestly, and I'm almost done with the anthology I'm currently reading through. After that I'm not sure what I'll do. Probably compile the notes I took? Maybe I'll take a mini-break or I'll be ready to write the sixth chapter of SOTL. Who knows? I certainly don't.

It Was All Just a Dream

I have been very very slowly making notes of different types of symbolism I can use in dreams. Mainly I'm trying to figure out the format for this book. It's coming together, forming the layers and settings of the dreamscape, and I really like it. It's exciting to have this story feel alive.

Also, I know I've said there's only going to be four key characters, but I accidentally made a fifth key character and a handful of secondary characters. I don't think I got too carried away, but I just had so many ideas for Kyla's life!

New short story???

Despite not actually WRITING my current novel WIPs, I still craved writing, and somehow I'm now experimenting with writing a short story! I haven't figured out a title yet so no idea how to talk about it. It is based on the same concept of a short story with the temp title The Chronosians that I wrote in high school, but it's like a sequel of sorts. Feel free to ask me questions about it if you want to hear more about it!
