Soooooooo much writers block…
This is gonna take longer than I thought 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Finished my rewatch of YJ yesterday and my brain is currently going into overdrive when it comes to planning out my season five fanwork. As of right now, the working title for the season is Young Justice: Deus, but that is subject to change. I have a potential plot for episode one all thought up, but as of right now nothing is really definite until I start finalizing the overarching story for the season. These are the things that I know for sure are going to be happening with this season…
The timeskip for this season will be one year. First episode takes place on November 11, 2021.
We’re going to be focusing on existing characters who have not been given enough attention for the most part. Folks like Wonder Girl, Spoiler, Arrowette, Tim Drake, and the like all deserve some love that they have not yet gotten.
There will be a heavy focus on the more cosmic side of the YJ universe with characters like the New Gods of both Apokolips and New Genesis as well as aliens such as the A’ashenn Martians, the Kryptonians from the Phantom Zone, and other powerful aliens getting major attention.
I found out after re-reading YJ: Targets that there are two Team members who have not yet been introduced, as the Team’s designations in the League’s computer system apparently jump from B-33 to B-36, so be prepared for me to 100% capitalize on that. Right now I have one of those two heroes decided upon, and it is one that I think y’all will be VERY excited to see (Especially now that Beast Boy is single. That’s the only hint you’re getting 🤩🤩🤩). The other unestablished character is still undecided, but I do have a few potential options already picked out. Other than that, we’re gonna try and keep new members of The Team and Outsiders to a relative minimum just so we can give more screentime to the existing characters we haven’t already seen much of.
The League’s Sanctuary that got teased at the end of season four is going to be a plot point this season (And Imma need the folks who read comics to stay fuckin’ quiet on why that may or may not be the case 😈😈😈).
That is currently all I have in terms of plans right now. If any of y’all have suggestions on things I should include, feel free to drop them in my inbox or dm me with them. I might actively make this a collab thing if anyone else might be interested in joining me on writing this whole thing out. That’d certainly save me plenty of time and effort, as I do really wanna actually do the entirety of the season if possible since it’s super unlikely we won’t be getting another and I’d hate to get burnt out writing this whole thing myself before reaching the end. Let me know if any of y’all might wanna hop on board and join me on this project. I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated on progress as I work more and more on it, and who knows? Maybe if a fanmade season five gets enough attention we could get an actual season five of Young Justice someday.
Never the end.
Almost done with my rewatch of YJ. I just finished Artemis’ arc in season 4. I have to say, season four isn’t really as bad as I remembered it being (At least the first two arcs). Looking forward to finishing the series and getting started on my plans for my version of season five!!!
I wonder what an Absolute Young Justice would look like… I’m guessing, much like how Absolute Batman was about Batman without his money and how Absolute Superman was about Superman without the Kents, Absolute Young Justice would be about The Team forming without their mentors’ tutelage. Thoughts?
“I’m completely doomed aren’t I?” from the Arsenal episode has to be one of the greatest moments of villain awareness I have ever seen, second only to “Anyone in there?” “Nope.” from Batman: The Animated Series
Not me crying over getting to the Coldhearted episode in my Young Justice rewatch. The last few moments of this episode and Performance both get me every time
I’m in the mood to rewatch Young Justice… Out of curiosity, if I were to do the thing I used to do of writing ideas and scripts for new seasons of that series, would y’all be interested in seeing that? I’m already getting a few ideas for a possible season five plot. Lemme know if anyone wants to see what all I come up with after I finish my rewatch
Superman (2025) persuasively sells you on something most other recent superhero movies don't, which is that a world with Superman is better off in meaningful ways than a world without.
It would fucking suck to live in the Marvel Universe as a non-superhero. You can identify with the protagonists, you can fantasize about being Tony Stark or whoever, but if you think about the civilians in those movies, the randos killed by the robot or sucked into the portal, it's hard to see the existence of superheroes as a net positive. They mostly seem to clean up problems that wouldn't have occurred in the first place without their egos and mistakes. Superman has a different emphasis though. The fantasy isn't just about having superpowers yourself, but about what if the natural disaster equivalent only did property damage, what if military aggression could be stopped in its tracks without a single civilian casualty, what if the evillest people in the world actually got their comeuppance.
It really meets the moment. I think a lot of us are wishing someone with power would do Literally Anything for the public good.
Shoutouts to characters that don't know the facade isn't their real self. Shoutouts to characters who put up a front so long ago that they have now forgotten it's all an act. Shoutouts to characters who no longer know who they are because they think they're being sincere. Shoutouts to performers so good they fool even themselves. Shoutouts to characters who fall for their own lies.
Definitely sounds like someone I know…
*true crime podcaster voice* Alrighty ladies, crack open some wine and get out your cupcakes, because today we're talking about the spooky, scary mystery of Jason Todd. But first, a word from our sponsor, HelloFresh—
“He’s got a million of them Harleen”
DON’T ROMANTICIZE HARLEY AND THE JOKER’S RELATIONSHIP
I always liked how this scene set up the Joker as someone who’d fooled a lot of people with his lies. Harley doesn’t fall for the Joker’s “tragic upbringing” routine because she’s stupid or lovestruck, she falls for it because he’s an expert manipulator who tailors his stories to whoever he’s talking to.
Just feel like mentioning this real quick because the previous post started it and I wanna add on to it:
Harleen Quinzel is a psychiatrist. She is educated. She is intelligent. She understands how people work and demonstrates it multiple times in the series. And the Joker got to her anyway, because that is what emotional manipulators do. When Batman laughs at her in “Mad Love”, he’s not mocking her. He’s laughing out of pity because he finally sees that Harley’s too blinded by love to see the Joker for what he really is. (Side note: The few times we ever see Batman laugh, it’s usually out of pity; see also “The Killing Joke”.)
Good people get manipulated. Smart people get manipulated. What happened to Harley Quinn happens every day, sometimes to the strongest, smartest, best people you could ever meet. Emotional abuse and manipulation victims aren’t stupid, or gullible, or anything like that. And that’s what Harley’s story is meant to show people. Manipulation can happen to ANYONE.
Harley was never abused because she was stupid, she was abused because the joker is an abuser.
very tired of the ‘Dick Grayson is mostly a pretty boy with bad puns, golden retriever vibes’ trope. Give me German Shepherd Dick. Give me the ‘consummate performer’ Dick. The one all, brilliance, bloody smiles and showmanship, the one with razor sharp wit and charm made weapon. Dick who seamlessly switches between a million personas. The one who doesn’t know what to do when the show’s over. Give me the Dick no one wants to be on the wrong side of because Nightwing might not start battles, but he finishes them. The only one whose threats the entire Batfam (including Bruce) takes seriously. The one fear toxins can’t affect because he’s been to hell and back.
The Dick who unlike Jason doesn’t even mention how much he’s been fucked up and survived. The one the Joker knew he couldn’t break.
It’s not a problem the first few times they meet, in the heat of battle, their only exchanges quickly barked commands and warnings. But the first few times they talk outside of combat? Oh, it’s an issue.
You see, Brucie Wayne is constricted to a rather limited vocabulary, but Batman gets to use his big boy words. And he does. Talks like he’s studying for the SAT at all times.
So when they start to talk, Superman unconsciously rises to meet his diction. He writes for a living, he knows fancy words too. It’s not showing off or anything, he’s just politely matching his conversation partner.
But to Batman? Oh, that’s a challenge. He’s Batman, he’s the smartest person in the room at all times - he has to be, otherwise what use is he on a team of gods? So he starts stretching his words out even longer. Upgrading from the SAT to the LSAT and MCAT and GRE.
And Superman, with his photographic memory and super-brain and professional-author-skills and, most importantly, Kent-raised politeness, steps up to join him.
By twenty minutes in, they sound like two thesauruses having a conversation. The only words under five syllables are prepositions and pronouns.
Lex Luthor is sitting tied up on the ground next to them mentally noting words down to look up later.
When there's a sunrise,there's a sunset.
Birds of a feather we should stick together:3
I bet the JL has a “how fucked are we” metric that’s literally just how many of Bruce’s kids are there.
Like if he pulls up to the alien invasion or whatever with just Robin, then everything’s fine. More than fine, actually, because Bruce feels comfortable enough to bring his eight year old along for the ride. This battle will take approximately fifteen minutes and they’ll all get shawarma after. Not fucked in the slightest.
But if Red Robin shows up too… hmm, okay, this is getting somewhat serious. Tim is one of Bruce’s most trusted partners; he’s the smart Robin, the tactician, the loyal one, and so if Batman brought him along then it means he’s at least a little bit worried about shit hitting the fan and wants one his advisors around. But the combined brain power of Bruce and Tim is pretty much unmatched (DC plot armor for the win), so everything will be fine, basically. Superman might take a hit, but everything’s going to be fine. Just keep calm and you’ll all make it home in time to Door Dash some Panda Express before it closes. So not that fucked.
It starts to get serious after that. When Signal and Spoiler roll up the scene, shit has definitely hit the fan. Batman’s worried enough to call in reinforcements and he’s probably doubting the League’s ability to listen/obey his orders, so he needs a backup plan in case things go really south. But with Signal’s abilities and Steph’s superpower of turning anything into a joke, chances are you’ll be okay. Maybe impaled or something, but okay. But still, fucked.
When Nightwing shows, the JL knows it’s starting to get dicey out on the field. See, Nightwing’s got his own team, his own issues—the fact that he set that all aside to help out his dad is cause for concern. On a scale from 1-10, they are at a 7. Above moderately fucked.
And… oh God. Black Bat? Most of the time the JL doesn’t even see her, but once she makes herself known and starts fighting alongside her siblings, they all start to silently freak out. Black Bat is a fucking machine and if she’s breaking a sweat trying to fight the Big Bad, things are definitely not going to go well. They start praying that Batman figures something out. They freak out. They are intrinsically fucked.
But God Forbid you catch sight of the Red Hood. The prodigal son is a legitimate killer, and if Batman’s letting him blow out brains then the JL knows he’s desperate. And a desperate Batman is not good. At all. They are definitely fucked.
I wonder if, in superhero universes, the villains ever get contacted by those “Make a Wish Foundation” and similar people.
I mean, the heroes do, of course they do, kids who want to meet Spiderman or Superman or get to be carried by the Flash as he runs through Central City for just thirty seconds.
But surely there are also the kids, who - because they are kids and sometimes kids are just weird - decide that what they really, really want is to meet a supervillain. Because he’s scary or she’s awesome or that freeze ray is just really, really cool, you know?
Oh, man, that would absolutely be a thing. The heroes would be so weirded out by it. The villains with codes of ethics would totally band together to force the villains without one (should they be the one requested) to do their part for the cause.
But imagine the person who has to track down the villains and organise everything?
Like, the first time it happens, no one actually thinks it’s possible, but one of the newbies volunteers to at least try. They get lucky, the kid wants to meet one of the villains who is well known to have a personal code of ethics (eg one of the rogues), and it takes them weeks to track the villain down to this one bar they’ve been seen at a few times, plus a week of staking out said bar, but they finally find them.
So they approach the villain, very politely introduce themselves and explain the situation, finishing with an assurance that, should the villain agree, no law enforcement or heroes will be informed of the meeting.
The villain, assuming it’s a joke, laughs in their face.
At this point, the poor volunteer, who has giving up weeks of their time and no small amount of effort to track down this villain, all so a sweet little girl can meet the person who somehow inspired them, well, at this point the employee sees red.
They explode, yelling at this villain about the little girl who, for some unknown reason, absolutely loved them, had a hand-made stuffed toy of them and was inspired by their struggle to keeping fighting her own and wasn’t the villain supposed to have ethics? The entire bar is witness to this big bad villain getting scolded by some bookish nobody a foot shorter than them.
When the volunteer is done, the villain calmly knocks back their drink, grips the volunteers shoulder and drags them outside. The bar’s patrons assume that person will never be seen again, the volunteer included. But once they’re outside, the villain apologises for their assumption, asks for the kid’s details so they can drop by in the near future, not saying when for obvious reasons. They also give the very relieved volunteer a phone number to call if someone asks for them again.
A week later, the little girl’s room is covered in villain merchandise, several expensive and clearly stolen gifts and she is happily clutching a stack of signed polaroids of her and the villain.
The next time a kid asks to meet a villain, guess who gets that assignment?
Turns out, the first villain was quite touched by the experience of meeting their little fan, and word has gotten around. The second villain happily agrees when they realise it’s the same volunteer who asked the other guy. Unfortunately, one of the heroes sees the villain entering the kid’s hospital and obviously assumes the worst. They rush in, ready to drag the villain out, but the volunteer stands in their way. The hero spends five minutes getting scolded for trying to stop the villain from actually doing a good thing and almost ruining the kid’s wish. The volunteer gets a reputation among villains as someone who can not only be trusted with personal contact numbers but who will do everything they can to keep law enforcement away during their visits.
The volunteer has a phonebook written in cypher of all the villain’s phone numbers, with asterixes next to the ones to call if any other villains give them trouble.
Around the office, they gain the unofficial job title of The Villain Wrangler.
The heroes are genuinely flabbergasted by The Villain Wrangler. At first, some of the heroes try to reason with them.
Heroes: “Can’t you, just, give us their contact details? They’ll never even have to know it was you.”
The Villain Wrangler: “Yeah sure, <rollseyes> because all these evil geniuses could never possibly figure out that it’s me who happens to be the common thread in the sudden mass arrests. Look man, even if it wouldn’t get me killed, it would disappoint the kids. You wouldn’t want to disappoint the kids would you?”
Heroes: “… no~ but…”
The Villain Wrangler: “Exactly.”
Eventually, one of the anti-hero types gets frustrated, and decides to take a stand. They kidnap the Villain Wrangler and demand that they give up the contents of the little black book of Villains, or suffer the consequences. It’s For the Greater Good, the anti-hero insists as they tie the Villain Wrangler to a pillar.
The Villain Wrangler: “You complete idiot, put me back before someone figures out that I’m missing.”
Anti-hero: “…excuse me?”
The Villain Wrangler: “Ugh, do I have to spell this out for you? Do you actually want your secret base to be wiped off the map? With us in it? Sugarsticks, how long has it been? If they get suspicious, they check in, and then if I miss a check-in, they tend to come barging into wherever I am just to prove that they can, even if they figure out that they’re not being threatened by proxy. Suffice to say, Auntie Muriel really regretted throwing my phone into the pool when she strenuously objected to me answering it during family time. If they think for even one moment that I’ve given them up, they won’t hesitate to obliterate both of us from their potential misery. You do know some of the people in my book have like missiles and djinni and elemental forces at their disposal, right?”
Anti-hero: “Wait, what? I thought they trusted you?!”
The Villain Wrangler: “Trust is such a strong word!”
Villain: “Indeed.”
Anti-hero: “Wait, wha-” <slumps over, dart sticking out of neck>
The Villain Wrangler: “Thanks. I thought they were going to hurt me.”
Villain: “You did well. You kept them distracted, and gave us time to follow your signal.” <cuts Villain Wrangler free>
The Villain Wrangler: <rubbing circulation back into limbs> “Yeah well, you know me, I do whatever I have to. So I’ll see you Wednesday at four at St Martha’s? I’ve got an 8yo burns unit patient recovering from her latest batch of skin grafts who could really use a pep talk.”
Villain: “… of course. Yes… I… yes.”
The Villain Wrangler: “I just think you could really reach her, you know?”
Villain: <unconsciously runs fingers over mask> “I… yes, but, what should I say?”
The Villain Wrangler: “Whatever advice you think you could have used the most just after.”
Villain: <hoists Anti-hero over shoulder almost absently> “….yes.”
The Villain Wrangler wasn’t lying to the Anti-hero. They know that the more ruthless villains would not hesitate if they thought for one second that the Anti-hero would betray them.
But this is not the first time the Villain Wrangler has gone to extreme lengths to protect their identities.
Trust is a strong word. The Villain Wrangler earned it, and is terrified by what it could mean.
My first official deadpool headcanon is this. This this this.
Okay but this whole concept actually makes a lot of sense, because villains are a lot more likely to be disfigured/disabled/use adaptive devices (bc ableist tropes), so of course, say, a child amputee is going to be more interested in the villain with a robot arm who almost destroyed New York than the heroes that took him down.
Also, imagine one of the kids gets better, and a few years down the line becomes a villain themself, except their crimes are things like smuggling chemo drugs across the border for families that can’t afford treatment, or stealing from corrupt businessmen to make donations to underfunded hospitals (idk this turned into a Leverage AU or something) and every time the heroes encounter her, they’re like “oh no. she’s getting away. curses. welp, nothing we can do.” Though it isn’t that she can’t take them on; bc of course once the villain from way back when found out what she was up to, he started helping/training her.
“I thought they just hired someone to dress up and pretend to be you,” she says, amazed, when he reveals himself. “I didn’t think they actually got the real you!”
Every year the Villain Wrangler gets a very expensive gift basket from the pair.
and for the kids who don’t get better the villains are there too, they show up to every funeral, they bear too small coffins on their shoulders and the heroes stand aside
they are fierce with grieving families assuring them that their child will not be forgotten, and they don’t balk at negative emotions, they don’t tell people to be strong or “celebrate their child’s life,” because these parents have every right to their grief and anger
and the lost children are never forgotten. flowers appear on graves during birthdays and anniversaries, heroes find pictures of those kids and they carefully take them down and ensure they’re delivered to the villain’s cell, and a few villains can be seen with friendship bracelets wrapped around their wrists the cops have learned not to try and take them off
And then one day, one of the evil geniuses who happens to specialise in inducing bizarre genetic mutations meets a young fan who was born with a rare genetic disorder that is slowly killing them, and realises that they can help.
Another, who created their own exosuit, talks to a young fan and suddenly understands how much the technology that they have built for themselves could revolutionise quality of life for people with muscular dystrophy, or paraplegia, or other disorders that confine people to wheelchairs with little mobility.
A third thinks of a way that their nanobots could be used to detect and remove cancer cells when their fan, who had been in remission, writes to say that the doctors have found a new metastasizing tumour.
Then shortly after, an evil genius specialising in cloning is contacted by an old colleague asking if a suitable heart couldn’t be grown for their young fan with a congenital heart condition who needs a donor.
Suddenly, a pattern of villains offering (and marketing) their insights and resources to improve medical science starts to arise. Many who had previously been operating on society’s fringes are shocked to receive public accolades, research grants and job offers from major companies because of their work.
A grassroots movement arises advocating for imprisoned villains with appropriate qualifications and/or experience to have access to resources to conduct research for the public good. The Second Chance Rehabilitation Project launches.
(It is an open secret that only people who have been vetted by the Villain Wrangler are allowed to join, because the Villain Wrangler has by now a meticulously set up method and intelligence network to run background checks and character references through ensure that none of the children wishing to meet their role models get hurt.)
Being able to say that one is involved with the Project begins to look really good in parole hearings. The Villains involved perform their own quality checks on one another, because if one of their kids got hurt, then all of their kids could potentially lose out, and the ones that are serious about the Project are not having that. (Also, the ability to collaborate with other geniuses is the most interesting thing to happen to most of them since losing to various heroes, and most consider the intellectual stimulation to be worth putting up with the ridiculous egoes and inevitable personality clashes that arise.)
Reformed Villains come out of the woodwork to advocate about better mental healthcare, and support systems. Savvy universities and private labs quietly take their advice, setting up better mental health supports and laboratory safety standards to prevent the Brain Drain caused by losing their less stable scientists to the Costumes.
The Villain Wrangler watches all of this develop with a smile.
Their plan succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.
This has been written as a fanfic on FF.net and is insanely good, it’s set in the dc universe.
