Also, even if there is a crop, you have to factor in:

Soil erosion requiring topsoil replacement

Soil amendments like (chemical) fertilizers

Equipment to till, plant, and harvest the crops creating impacting by manufacturing and maintenance

The fuel needed to run the equipment

Impact of using pesticides and herbicides on the surrounding environment

GMO crops cross pollinating and ruining organic farms in the area

This is disingenuous at best and misinformation at worst. Yes, there are places where cows are the best thing you can do . But large amounts of cattle farming is done in places that could produce eg soybeans at vastly more calories or grams of protein per acre/liter/ton-of-co2-equivalent. The problem isn't farmers like this, who are using rain and otherwise unproductive land. The problem is large cattle ranches in eg the US where there's not enough water to go around anyway and massive amounts of land are being used to grow high-protein feed (since straight grass doesn't produce high quality meat quickly). Also, cows produce methane. Crops don't.

And don't forget that ranching requires antibiotics, equipment and fuel (you have to move the cows to the slaughterhouse and maintain the slaughterhouse equipment, at a minimum), and very often huge amounts of land growing the feed for the animals, which is subject to all of the same problems you're complaining about for growing crops.

I don't really understand the purpose of posts like this. Why can't we humbly examine the impact we have on the environment and tune the balance to be better? What good does it do us to laugh at people who are trying their best to make the world a better place? Sure, such people can be misguided, but in that case the best approach is to show them a better solution for the problem they want to solve, not laugh at them for being so sensitive and idealistic and daring to want to identify and solve problems. It does no one any good to laugh at people who honestly want the world to be better, no matter how bad their ideas about how to accomplish that are.
