dont know how to explain this to people nicely anymore so i will simply be an asshole and speak in bullet points. getting sexually abused and preyed on in his early years is kon’s canon event. what you see in the retconned/softbooted versions seem confusing and or antithetical at times because editorial routinely ignores his sexual abuse. his youthful arrogance cannot be separated from his sexual proclivities. he desires women carnally, but does not know how to be around them without being weird about it because of his history. he sucks at holding down a girlfriend and being a good partner because his formative experiences were with an abuser and with an older woman who had unfair expectations of him. he would have ended up with knockout in another world because he doesn’t perceive her preying on him as anything bad. all his writers between 1993-2002 (except didio) have consistently highlighted that knockout and tana contribute to his depression, feelings of helplessness, and abnormal sexual behaviors. say it with me, lads. kon el is a victim of child sex abuse. it warped his ideas of sexuality, his performance of masculinity, and his idea of what constitutes a ‘normal’ life. due to being a clone (regardless of which dad-canon you prefer), the abuse is foundational as to why he struggles so deeply with the women around him.

Been on my mind and I just wanna, kinda, vent about it.

I don't have a problem with Toichi Kuroba being alive. Honestly? The fact that his killers knew KID was Toichi tells me that there had to be some dealings both in costume and out. Toichi 100% strikes me as the kind of guy to attend his own murder plot, learn how it will be done, and then use it to his advantage. Makes sense; seems in-character.

What worries me about Toichi's not-death is I don't trust Gosho to write the proper reveal (if it happens at all). Because Kaito Kuroba has gone most of his life believing his father is dead. Normally, in a case like this, a character in Kaito's position might be portrayed as "Everyone says my dad is dead, but I know he's not!" But that isn't the case with Kaito. We see him mourn his father's absence, we see his outrage when he learns the truth (both when finding out about KID and the Pandora). When Kaito finds out the truth, it cannot be a simple "Hah, I figured it out awhile ago" or "I missed you so much." Kaito has been shown to angry, his life has been absolutely ruined by his father's "death," and if he ever finds that wasn't the case he will be livid.

And that's what I mean when I say "I don't trust Gosho." Because as much as I do like his character writing, and the fact he does let his characters get angry, they never get angry when there's good reason. They get frustrated, but they move on. That or they have a certain personality that allows them to forgive easily. The same cannot be said for Kaito. If Toichi is ever revealed, it is within Kaito's character to be angry. To yell and bear that grudge. It bears reminding that the current KID exists for the purpose of vengeance. Kaito took the mantle because he wanted answers, yes, but that was fueled by his own grief at not only losing his father but being lied to (having no prior info on KID before he literally stumbles into the life).

So yeah, all this to say, I do not mind the Toichi is alive aspect. I don't think it breaks the story at all because Kaito believes he is dead (and that's what is important). What I do mind is whether Gosho will treat it with the gravity it deserves. Because unlike Shinichi, who is pretty aware of his parents' shenanigans and therefore is capable of picking up their tricks, Kaito was not privy to such an upbringing. The most he knows, or at least as we're shown, is that his father was a magician. And unless we get that betrayal, unless we see Kaito realize how worthless this has all been, how worthless his grieving was, I worry.
