Reblogging bc I keep seeing those damn ‘Anti Will Solace’ claims on the Will Solace tag.

One rant claimed that he was a groomer for holding his doctor status over Nico’s head (ex. Doctor’s orders), when he’s only done that once in the books, and it’s mostly the fandom that uses that phrase a lot. Will Solace is not a real person, and he’s not a real doctor, he’s a healer— who uses doctor humor.

a lot of Anti Will Solace, or Anti Solangelo ranters usually have invalid points (except for disliking the bisexual wandering eye trope, which I get.) They always place Nico as the victim, they do infantilize him sometimes too. All of the Solangelo dislikers usually paint Will Solace as someone evil, but some of them are ones who would defend Octavian if given the chance.

also, Anti Will Solace makes it sound like it’s a political issue or that he’s a disease to be studied.

lastly, if you’re going to post Anti Will Solace, which I would personally wish you kept to yourself, don’t post it on the main Will Solace tag, make a community page for a Anti Will Solace thing, whatever your heart desires, just don’t ruin it for the rest of us who understand his character and want to make silly head canons or silly fanart of him.

now if Will was the hero, I think he’d be more like a mix of Natasha, A wee bit of star lord (fighting style and humor wise) But I think mostly a slightly more optimistic version of Gwen Stacy, because she hides her true feelings for the sake of others sometimes, which fits Will. He won’t really tell someone when he feels sad, (spoilers for Across the Spider verse) similar to how Gwen kept to herself after her Peter died, and after leaving her dad.

I love solangelo, but I don’t love how SOME of the shippers make Nico very feminine and/or make Will more masculine.

I also don’t like how people make Nico helpless and the one who needs to be taken care of by a “stronger” person. It rubs me the wrong way when you take Nico, who is one of the strongest characters in PJO and turn him into a mostly defenseless kid that needs Will or someone else to save the day.

Especially in specific fanfics where Nico is an “UwU innocent baby” and Will is portrayed as a “Alpha dom Masculine guy” and is pushed aside by everyone.

Will and Nico are kids, in a lgbtq relationship. They shouldn’t be put into the roles of a Man and Woman relationship. This also goes for the portrayal of Nico being the beautiful one and Will being the ‘batshit crazy’ one, it makes me feel a little uncomfortable. They also shouldn’t be sexualized by the fandom, it’s so bad for Nico and it GENUINELY makes me feel so gross seeing a kid in NSFW art with his boyfriend who is ALSO A MINOR.

(I also saw a Solangelo angst fanfic and the description said ‘I made a Nico angst Solangelo fanfic bc there isn’t a lot of that’ which made me confused bc at least 90% of the Solangelo fanfics are about Nico.)

I have nothing against headcanons, but if it includes ONLY Nico being the hyperfem one of the relationship that needs saving all the damn time, then I slightly feel judgmental toward you.

Hot Take: Piper is one of the Most mischaracterized and Overhated in PJO

Ok. So let’s get a few things straight, Piper is one of the most controversial characters in PJO personality wise.

Piper is/was often described as a Pick Me Girl, even though Piper has never put down a girls for the sake of a man’s attention.

I get pissed off about this particular claim because I don’t know if we read the same book. I don’t remember her putting down Annabeth, or Hazel. Just because she doesn’t like dresses, doesn’t mean she’s a pick me girl. So stop throwing mini hissy fits whenever she exists or has an opinion. For example, people got REAL upset when she said that she didn’t see Percy as attractive. Is she not allowed to have an opinion? ‘Well she was quick to stereotype Percy, and she said she hated getting stereotyped!’ BECAUSE SHE WAS RACIALLY STEREOTYPED! The first pages of the book, her “classmates” commented racially offensive stereotypes on her!

that is FAR different then what Piper saw with Percy! She wasn’t thinking about him racially, she was thinking about him at what came to mind quickest! I’d bet if Piper was a boy, most of the fandom would laugh all of this off and call it a day, but since Piper is a girl, it’s a WHOLE OTHER PROBLEM.

Her sexuality is another story, I hope Rick dives into, bc he made it clear that she is QUESTIONING/SAPPHIC, so it can come off as slightly offensive when someone assumes she’s a lesbian after she’s revealed to be dating a girl after Jason.

I personally find Piper relatable, I have never been racially stereotyped, but I found comfort in her because she was native like me, I was questioning for awhile, and I preferred to not wear dresses for awhile as well. It’s a COMMON THING for most kids to experience growing up!

Piper is a teenager! Her trauma is valid! No matter what type of shit she went through, you can’t just wipe it off because she went through less than anyone else. It can be very painful for people to hear that their trauma is less than what someone else experiences. It shouldn’t make someone feel that way, they should experience human emotions at their own pace. It pisses me off that the fandom can hate Piper, but love Leo, I think Leo is a good character, but he was actively rude to Frank, and most people brushed it off because Leo is silly, handsome, and traumatized?

things need to change in the PJO fandom.

I think one of the most painful experiences as a solangelo enjoyer is being a will lover because most of you do not like Will. And I don’t even mean that you just don’t like his character. Going through the Will Solace tag and seeing outright mischaracterization that just outright contradicts canon. Not in the fun way fandom does, but in the way that it feels like some solangelo fans just want to make Will into something they think is more suitable for Nico or bend canon Nico closer to fanon Nico?

Like there is a popular trend of making Will Secretly A Violent Psycho With a Gun because *checks notes* he’s from Texas? I’m not even from there but I am from the south and it just feels like an icky headcanon? Like Texas has its issues but it’s not a gun-toting hell scape that many people think it is for the times I’ve been. Like we hear from his own mouth in BoO that he’s “just a healer” when we meet him first TLO is’s introduced as a healer and isn’t fighting. In ToN he stops the fight by yelling then taking Nico and leaving. And (even though many of you didn’t read it or hate-read it and ignored all the good parts of it) in TSATS Will says that he enjoys being a healer and doesn’t want to be a warrior. And that’s SO COOL from a world building perspective. Nearly every other character is a fighter in some way — even Leo with his fire powers, even Rachel throwing a hairbrush at a newly risen Titan King. Will gives us a chance to see a different type of strength but for some reason fandom hates kind, gentle characters (I have a suspicion it’s internalized femmephobia but that’s for later).

And when you add Nico, this headcanon is paired with Etherial Pretty Princess Nico and I don’t get that either? He’s canonically unsettling? He freaks everyone out with the dead-eyed stare and defaults to a sorrowful glare for the majority of the series. We know from Reyna that he is softer when he sleeps so best faith interpretation that’s where that hc comes from but you don’t need to make Will this hypermasculine Alpha Male to make Nico softer around the edges. It’s a disservice to both characters and their relationship.

Nico does NOT need a hero. I know Rick loves to give him the damsel treatment (and I will die mad about that) but he doesn’t need Will to come save the day or defend him from bullies or some secret third thing. All Nico needed was support and to know he is cared for and Will (and Jason and Hazel and Reyna and Hedge) does that from day 1 (even though you all jumped him and called him toxic for not wanting to let Nico die but whatever). Nico can save himself and Rick made that clear. The fandom is the one who made Will into Captain Save a Hoe. Fics frequently have Nico honestly suck? As a boyfriend? He doesn’t offer any real support to Will, sometimes doesn’t seem to like Will, or will have his flaws glossed over because he Traumatized and that trumps Will getting any real closure from the conflict of the story.

And that SUCKS because Nico is SOOO good to Will in canon. He understands his plight and struggles as The Healer and offers support when he can. He’s the one who communicates Will’s anxieties to Lester. He offers a compromise in Will coming with him on the Nero quest to try to placate his fears. Nico di Angelo is a great boyfriend and I hate you all for taking that from him to make Will your self-insert therapist for Nico.

They are boyfriends, but most importaintly they are BESTfriends. A lot of couples (in media in general) to me feel like all they do is being cutsey and sweet to eachother, (sadly Frazel felt like that to me) BORING. With Nico and Will I actually feel like they are friends on top of being together.

it’s so nerve racking to say that ‘I like Will Solace’ on any platform (tumblr especially) bc either you’ll be assumed you like the mischaracterizations of Will, or you’ll be attacked if you have some kind of opinion that says ‘Will Solace is [positive energy description]’

there’s when people think Will is a sunshine person and does no wrong and they’re serious abt it, (they get attacked by the fandom)

then theres people who think he’s batshit crazy, uses guns because he’s Texan?? (They also get attacked by the fandom)

then there’s people who said Will Solace is gay, even though he and Mr. Riordan himself said, Will Solace is canonically a bisexual character.

So, in conclusion. DONT ATTACK PEOPLE WHO LIKE WILL SOLACE (any character in general) THEN PROCEED TO MISCHARACTERIZE THEM THAT IS FAR FROM THEIR CANONICAL PERSONALITY!

You can still have headcanons for him! It’s fine! I’m saying that mischaracterization can really mess up that characters reputation with the fandom, like Will Solace.

This is what he actually acts like in the book from my observation

he can be independent

He can be vulnerable when he needs to be

He can be smart, but make bad decisions sometimes

He is KIND not NICE there’s a difference

when Nico does something Will doesn’t agree with, he TALKS to him about that in a very PATIENT way.

He uses violence when necessary, but not recklessly!

nico and Will are both HAPPY together

This is what Will Solace is, he can be flawed, he CAN be human! Something that the PJO fandom has trouble with is Humanizing certain characters! I don’t want to be attacked online just because I have a certain opinion on Will Solaces character

I’m fine if you don’t like him, I won’t bother you. If it’s for a reasonable opinion

like: He wasn’t a well written character, is valid because I can agree.

but not like this: "I don’t like Will Solaces because he’s toxic to Nico!” Or “he’s not a good boyfriend because he left Nico alone, he didn’t even bring a weapon”

I haven’t seen a moment where Solangelo was toxic, let alone, Will being toxic to Nico. He did make a stupid decision by leaving him alone, yes. But that adds to his canonical personality, ‘He is smart but doesn’t make great decisions sometimes’

Liking a character shouldn’t be scary, having headcanons, shouldn’t be scary. So, now it is.

About a week later I logged back on with 17 messages in my ask, most of them from the anon. I scrolled down and at first when I logged off, the anon messaged me things like

This was extremely surprising to me. I thought “After all those horrible messages you sent to me for MONTHS about hating me and wanting me dead, you say ‘sorry’ and that you ‘cant be responsible for someone’s suicide’?”
