Grace was really hoping he’d get to stay on the Hail Mary until his dome is ready, but she had other plans. She’s held up well all these years, far beyond her planned mission. But despite their best efforts, time and space have taken their toll.

The Eridians can fix her up, but it’s not safe for Grace to stay up there anymore. His dome has about a month of work left, so the science team constructed a small shelter connected to the elevator station for him to stay in until it’s ready. Grace has no idea what to expect from it, which isn’t helping with the persistent anxiety clinging to him like noxious residue.

It also probably has something to do with the fact that he’s finally going to meet Adrian. - “Adrian is inside already,” Rocky says, bouncing in place a few times before scuttling across the airlock to the shelter door. His energy is infectious as always, and Grace can’t help but chuckle softly as he catches up to him.

But then Rocky opens the door, and Grace finds it hard to think of anything at all.

Rocky chirps softly to get Grace’s attention and stomps lightly. “Know what blanket is. Not what Rocky is asking. What’s that?”

Grace finally manages to make it stop, forces the whole console to shut down, but it doesn’t matter. The words feel like they echo through the ship, rippling through the Eridians. Through Adrian.

And Rocky.

“What mean?” Rocky asks, frantic and shrill. “Grace, what human mean you were forced onto ship?”

Grace manages to make it all the way to Erid, plus a few extra years, without revealing how he ended up on the Hail Mary. He was going to get to it eventually, but the choice is taken out of his hands once they make contact with Earth.

Very cool sound design detail! I saw an interview where James Ortiz talked about trying to give Rocky an emotional character arc, something that was absent in the book and script. He talked about telling the story of trauma recovery physically through Rocky's body language. How he wanted the audience to feel Rocky's journey from shell-shocked to feeling comfortable in his own body again.

And that's reflected in the sound design with Rocky's echolocation noise.

He makes this sound when he's trying to "look" closely at something, usually objects. The cool thing is, he also does it when he feels insecure. Whenever he gets vulnerable and uncomfortable he pings this noise at Grace. It's like looking really closely at someone because you're anxious to know what they're thinking.

He goes from doing it before and after every sentence, to less and less as they get familiar with each other. He's suddenly doing it non-stop again for the whole one-way trip conversation, when Grace is actively hiding his emotions from him. It doesn't show up again after that until the end when he hesitates before calling Grace "brave".

Really good detail.
