My 22-year-old, childless sister had a hysterectomy this afternoon.

And it just hit me now that she's never going to give birth to a niece or nephew for me to love. She's never going to be pregnant. She's not going to give my parents natural grandkids. Surrogacy and adoption are still options for her, but they weren't even on her mind before this. They seem like cold, calculated processes. She's an emotional, artistic, rose-colored-glasses-wearing kind of person -- nothing like me. She wanted the surprise of pregnancies, the pain of childbirth, and then the children. No one wanted this.
