I’m very envious of all the people that have been active on Tumblr all these past years. I’m dusting the cobwebs off this old page...
I switched to Autodesk Match Mover for tracking the face markers and it's working much better! Really easy to use. The best part is I can track my calibration markers on the helmet and recreate the camera movement on a real 3D camera. That's gonna be really handy!
Tracking markers on my new test footage. The color filter is applied to make them easier to track in After Effects. (I disable the filter for the eyeballs, which works pretty well). It's quite a bit slower than I'd like, so I'd love suggestions of faster tracking methods. I might try Blender next.
First test with my head-mounted face camera to capture facial motion capture, combined with my new OptiTrack motion capture system. The helmet was too shiny so I had to tape paper all over it. Looks like a couple of markers fell off before I took the photo too. More to come soon...
I recorded footage of a squirrel outside play a soprano saxophone. Ok, he was really eating a squirrel sized baguette. A friend suggested replacing it with a sax.
Spider-Man painting, finished.
Here's a few photos of my process painting Spider-Man as a gift for a friend's house warming party.
I based the painting on a tiny 200px jpeg image that I found online of the J Scott Campbell variant cover of the Amazing Spider-Man "Marvel NOW!" issue #1. (At the time I couldn't actually make out what issue it was from.) So I drew a concept in Photoshop using the tiny jpeg as my starting point. I simplified the color palette, changed the costume a little bit, and changed some other details.
Then using my new home theater projector I projected the image onto a big blank canvas and started painting, first with the black lines, then filling in all the colors and refining the palette as I painted. Lastly I went back over the black lines and then added the white webs.
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
"We are such stuff as dreams are made on; and our little life is rounded with a sleep." - William Shakespeare, The Tempest.
Apparently it’s Shakespeare’s 450th birthday today (give or take a few days depending on who you believe). So I decided to do a little animation of The Bard. The quote is from The Tempest, I like it because it’s Shakespeare being meta and also thought provoking.
CHOCOLATE!!! Decided to celebrate Easter with a little gif to test out animating in Flash. It's been a long time since I've animated with Flash.
I got a bendy figure of Danny from Bravest Warriors in a mystery box yesterday, and I thought "I heard that show is good, I should watch it," so I binge watched all of Season 1 on YouTube. Then I started doodling the idea for this gif, until I found I out that could binge watch 9 more episodes from Season 2 as well! So amazing! Every time Catbug speaks I get a big stupid smile on my face, and so I made this gif.
I really dug Captain America: The Winter Soldier. So much so I did some fan art. After seeing it a second time I got to thinking "Winter Soldier... Ice King... Adventure Time style fan art!"
I been listening to a lot of happy music lately. Particularly dj BC’s “The Beastles” album “Ill Submarine”. (The Beastie Boys, mashed with The Beatles. High energy meets groovy classics) So great.
Funko Pop figures are everywhere. I got a Jabba the Hutt bobble-head in a mystery box last year, and I bought a Batman Funk Pop figure. I'm not the biggest fan of the style, but the fact they have so many identifiable characters and brands all redesigned in their one art style, it's pretty impressive. They even have Jay and Silent Bob figures now. I was drawing up a design for a custom figure I might make while listening to Tell 'Em Steve-Dave so I had to draw Bry, Walt and Q as Funko Pop figures! I would totally put these on my desk.
To shoot the spacewalk scenes a LED screen was folded into a box, the actor was put inside, and the light from the screen was used to light the actor. That way, instead of moving either Bullock or Clooney in the middle of static lights, the projected image moved while they stayed still. The “light box”, key to the spacewalk scenes was a nine-foot cube just big enough for one actor.
Gravity (2013)

Thank you to Rita for the video link.
The way they filmed Gravity is just amazing.
The anticipation of the Breaking Bad finale was killing me, so I sketched this picture while I was waiting. And in celebration, after the show ended, I decided to color it too.
'Nuff said.
Eggs and Lentils with Garlic Scapes and Asparagus
This is an awesome protein rich meal I put together a few weeks ago, and I've been making it a lot since. It takes no time to cook, and you can do most of the preparation while it's cooking. I've made it as an after-workout brunch, breakfast, and a quick and easy dinner on more than one occasion. Multi-purpose!
