Hur vi legitimerar spel

Många vill att spel ska tas på allvar. Exakt vad det innebär är jag inte helt säker på. Men jag tror att det ofta handlar om folk vill kunna ägna sig åt spel utifrån sitt perspektiv. Inte som ett fritidsintresse, utan som något som man hänger sig åt, ger mycket av sin tid till. Alltså att kunna arbeta med det. Därför behövs pengar och därför behöver vi legitimiteten.

När vi pratar om spel använder vi ett paraplybegrepp som betyder olika saker för olika människor (och på olika språk). Vissa använder det synonymt med digitala spel och klumpar därför ihop spel med alla möjliga sorters teknik. Andra fokuserar på rollspel, brädspel, kortspel och figurspel. Några menar att alla ovanstående och även lekar och sporter bör inkluderas i begreppet.

Vi är många som vill legitimera spel. Men vi gör det på olika sätt.

Sverok vill legitimera spel genom att fokusera på spelhobbyn. Spel borde vara legitimt för att många håller på med det på sin fritid. Det stora intresset legitimerar.

Branschorganisationer vill legitimera spel genom att fokusera på produkten. Spel borde vara legitimt för att det genererar vinst. Den ekonomiska ruljansen legitimerar.

Esportsförbund vill legitimera spel genom att fokusera på tävlingen. Esport borde var legitimt för att det är sport. Spelande på elitnivå legitimerar.

Automat (och liknande grupper) vill legitimera spel genom att fokusera på konsten. Spel borde vara legitimt för att det är ett konstnärligt uttryck. Det konstnärliga värdet legitimerar.

Alla ovanstående metoder är giltiga och sanna utifrån sina perspektiv och det går bra att hålla med fler än en eller ingen alls. Jag hoppas att ni har nytta av den här tankemodellen för jag tror att det är värdefullt för personer som vill legitimera spel att ta reda på var deras intressen ligger och vilka de bör samarbeta med.

Hey we’re making a Game Jam!

So we’re collaborating with Elisabeth Tegner of http://neohouse.se and her event Tidsvåg. It’s a pretty darn cool happening with lots of playful installations and other stuff. Also, it happened in the 1990′s. And now it’s happening again at Vetenskapsfestivalen in Gothenburg this year (2019 for those reading this from the future). Anyway, we got in touch with Elisabeth a while back and decided that Automat should host a game jam and then showcase the results at the Tidsvåg event. We came up with two themes: utopia and crafts, but couldn’t decide on which we liked best, så we ended up merging them into “Craft Your Own Utopia”.

Above are some pictures of our marketing process for the game jam. Making the picture was very much a brainstorm process where we just came up with ideas and made them into objects that we then put into the picture.

Jag arrangerar en experimentell dataspelsfest som heter Automat och jag letar efter folk som vill hjälpa mig med det.

Automat handlar om 3 saker: 1. att vara en plattform för nyskapande experiment som gränsar mellan spel och konst 2. att föra samman främlingar med hjälp av spel och installationer som socialt smörjmedel 3. att visa upp och främja Göteborgs lokala spelkultur

Vad behöver jag? Jag behöver hjälp med att planera och styra inför, under och efter varje evenemang. Automat hade inte varit möjligt utan den hjälp, stöd och deltagande som jag fått av människor i mitt nätverk.

Jag har dock saknat att planera evenemangen tillsammans med någon. För att jag ska orka fortsätta driva Automat, så behöver jag en planeringsgrupp. Vi behöver inte bli många, bara fler än en person. Typ tre kanske?

basically mattel had done a survey and discovered that girls didn’t think ken was “cool” enough

SO someone had the bright idea to research coolness by sending people to raves which, at the time, were mostly hosted & attended by gay men. so they went to these raves and took notes on what the fashions were and finally landed on this outfit, mesh shirt & all 

this doll became the best selling ken doll in history, mostly because gay men bought it in droves. (many of them said his necklace was supposed to be a cockring) but mattel and a number of parents weren’t very amused and discontinued the doll

Here’s the issue: THERE IS NO MATCHING BARBIE. Magic Earring Ken is out here straight up wearing cock rings on his jacket with a thinly devised advertising ploy to make it SEEM not-gay. But it’s DEFINITELY GAY. (And if you’re thinking, why cock rings? Well way back in 1992 gay culture was HUGE on wearing cock rings, it was the in-style. Everyone who was gay wore one, even women; you sewed them to your leather jacket, and the placement indicated some of your sexual preference. In case you were wondering, Ken is a Bottom.)

AND IT GETS BETTER. Magic Earring Ken was on the shelves for six weeks before they pulled him. In that short amount of time? Magic Earring Ken became the BEST SELLING Barbie Doll Mattel has EVER SOLD. LET THAT SINK IN. SIX WEEKS.
