This is the Harlan J. Smith Telescope. It is housed at the McDonald Observatory on Mount Locke in West Texas. It was built as a 107 inch telescope, but in 1970 an employee shot the primary mirror several times, leaving it with an effective diameter of only 106 inches.
This is the Fallen Monarch. It is a giant sequoia tree in the Grant Grove section of Kings Canyon National Park. It has been used as a temporary shelter for loggers, a hotel and saloon, a home for French-Canadian squatters until they could build a cabin, and a military horse stable over the years. Now it’s just a convenient way to get from the North Grove Loop to the General Grant Tree.
This aerostat, moored between Marfa and Valentine, TX, is part of the Customs and Border Patrol's Tethered Aerostat Radar System. It's a blimp attached to a nearly five mile long tether that monitors the airspace over the U.S./Mexico border in West Texas.
This a white fallow deer buck in Mount Madonna County Park. William Randolph Hearst gifted a pair of these to the California cattle baron Henry Miller, whose summer estate once sat on the land that became the park. Over the past century, the deer have become so inbred that the two remaining bucks must be kept separate from the does, to prevent them from creating another hopelessly ill generation of fawns.
