Spain has been dealing with national IP blockades since last year. The reason is that LaLiga (the spanish football league) wants to fight against piracy of its content. How are they doing it? By blocking platforms like Cloudflare (which directs 20% of the internet traffic's on a global level, probably a higher percentage in Spain) every single time there's a football match. It's been half a year of dealing with internet issues every single weekend.

This was brought to court soon after it started. The judge dismissed the case as if it was a tiny little dispute between two companies and not an infringement on internet rights.

Now, LaLiga wishes to extend that blockade to also cover Champion's League matches, tennis matches and golf matches. The whole week would become plague ridden with internet issues. People have also started to use VPNs to avoid the blockade, but those are also being looked into by LaLiga.

The spanish football industry is a fucking mafia. There is no way to justify shutting down a country everytime a match happens just to avoid piracy. And mind you, LaLiga is one of the richest business ventures in Spain, they are not lacking money.

When Cloudflare went down for one (1) day globally, I remember most people saying they were unable to perform half the tasks their normal lives required. That is the norm on Spain right now.

Some affected websites include the Official Spanish Dictionary, the Biometrics Center of Investigation of Spain, supermarkets, some football teams, sponsors of those football teams, digital journals, all kinds of online storefronts for medium and small businesses, lots of image hosting platforms and even 24/7 pharmacies.
