December Wrap-up!

Here we are, a full year later! This post will actually be the last post I post on this blog. Which is both sad and kind of nice, because it means we can start something new! I always wanted this blog to be a reference for people wanting to get into old K-pop, so you can easily look for songs released in a specific year and get some basic info about many different groups. But it’s not over yet, I’m going to start a new blog like this one, but instead of covering the 90s and early 2000s, we are covering 2009 to 2015!!! Be sure to check out @kpopotd2 !!!

14th - 2006 - FNC Entertainment was founded, housing artists such as: F.T. Island, CNBlue and AOA.

15th - 1991 - SBS Popular song aired for the first time, which today is know as Inkigayo.

December 31st, 2003 Shinhwa released: Winter Story

Shinhwa (신화) is the longest still running K-pop boygroup debuting in 1998. Their ‘Winter Story’ album, came after their 2003 Winter Story Tour. Since the tour was such a hit, the decided to start making Winter Story albums, and have so far released four albums in the series. This album was also their first release under Good Ent. after leaving SM Ent. earlier in the year. The group chose to switch entertainments because all the members contracts with SM Ent. had expired, and all but one member, Dongwan, was offered a new contract. The rest of the member where not ok with this, and thus started a big court case on who owned the rights to the name Shinhwa. Lee Soo Man, the head of SM Ent. denied Shinhwa to use the name Shinwa under another record label. The court case took in total 12 years before the group won all the right to their name. One reason why this case lasted so long is because in 2005 SM Ent. trademarked the name ‘Shinhwa’ and a year later the gave the right so June Media. In 2008 Shinhwa left Good Ent. and formed Shinhwa Company in 2011 and signed a contract to be able to use their name, but June Media failed to send them evidence of owning the trademark rights to the name and filed another lawsuit. This ended in June Media’s favour, so form 2013 Shinhwa changed their company name to ShinCom and only used their logo and not their name on their albums. Finally in 2015 they got the rights to their name.

December 30th, 1993 Deux released their second album: Deuxism

Deux (듀스) was a hip hop duo active between 1992 and 1995. The duo consisted of Lee Hyun-do (이현도) and Kim Sung-jae (김성재) who had been friends since the early 90s. Hyun-do did most of the writing and composing of their songs and Sung-jae did the choreography. They really pioneered hip hop in Korea, and have influenced many K-pop groups to come.

December 28th, 2000 4Men released their second album: If I Gather For A Thousand Days Like This, the Breakup Will Disappear 

4Men (포맨) was originally a four member group, consisting of Yoo Min-soo (윤민수), Jeong Se-young (정세영), Han Hyeon-hee (한현희) and Lee Jung-ho (이정호). The group has regurarly swapped out it’s members and is currently on their forth generation. Today the group is a duo consisting of Shin Yong-jae (신용재) and Kim Won-joo (김원주)

December 27th, 2006 BlueDawn released their second album: When Spring Comes

BlueDawn (푸른새벽) was a indie folk rock duo formed in 2003 by Dawn (한희정) and Sorrow (정상훈). They released three albums together, before disbanding in 2007. Both members went on to make their own solo music, but came back in 2012 to release a Christmas album, ‘Blue Christmas’.

December 26th, 1995 Roo’ra released their third album: Reincamation of the Legend

Roo’Ra (룰라) was a co-ed group originally active between 1994 and 2001. In 1995 Shin Jung-hwan (신정환) had to leave the group to fulfill his mandatory military service, he was replaced by Chae Ri-na (채리나) who later joined Diva.  Their title song, ‘Heavenly Love’, stirred a lot of controversy due to it being sampled from the song ‘’Omatsuri Ninja’’ by Ninja, and not crediting them. This also sparked a debate on the Korean-ness of K-pop and this almost made the group split up in 1996.

December 24th, 1999 Park Hyo-shin released his first album: Things I Can’t Do For You

Park Hyo-shin (박효신), born on December 1st 1981. He almost gave up on his dream of becoming a singer, because he started out as a trainee under one company, but was later moved over to a different one. At the new company, he was forced to pay money to the company because he ignored a sponsor. Luckily a friend of him introduced him to Hwang Yoon-min, a composer, who took Park under his wing. He trained for another year before his first album got released. His first single was ‘Fool’, and the album did ok, but his real success came after appearing on the KBS show Lee Sora’s Propose.

December 23rd, 2000 S.E.S. released their forth album: A Letter From Green Land

S.E.S. (에스이에스) was a trio originally active between 1997 and 2002. ‘A Letter From Greenland’ marked jet a another change in the groups concept, this time completely abandoning their cute concept and becoming more mature and sophisticated. Their first single from the album, ‘Show Me Your Love’, is a cover of  Misia’s ‘‘つつみ込むように‘‘, but with a more slow an jazzy feel. They released two more singles from the album: ‘‘Be Natural’‘ & ‘‘Long Long Time’‘. Both songs became very popular, and their songs have been covered multiple times, notable is that Red Velvet’s second single was a cover of ‘Be Natural’.

December 22nd, 2006 BIGBANG released their debut album: Vol. 1

BigBang (빅뱅), is a five member boy group under YG Ent. consisting of: Seungri  (승리), Daesung (대성), G-Dragon (지드래곤), Taeyang (태양) and T.O.P. Most of the members had some experience in the entertainment industry before their debut. G-Dragon and Taeyang had been trainees at YG Ent. since the age of 11. Seungri appeared in Let’s Cokeplay: Mnet Battle Shinhwa, and T.O.P. had been an underground rapper. They made their debut at the YG Family 10th Anniversary Concert. Their first album debuted on #3 on the Korean music charts, and it initially sold over 30,000 copies, in the first month. Some other singles from the album: ‘’We Belong Together’’, ‘’LaLaLa’’, ‘’This Love’’ and ‘’A Fool of Tears′’

December 20th, 2006 GostWind released their second album: Korea Rd

GostWind (고스트 윈드) is a indie band formed in 2004. Their musical style is hard rock with Korean folk influences.

December 19th, 2006 Brian Joo released his first album: The Brian

Brian (브라이언), known as Brian Minkyu Joo and Joo Min-Kyoo (주민규), born January 10th, 1981. He was born in America, and got an audition with Brothers Ent. which later sent him to SM Ent. In 1999 at the age of 17 he made his debut as a part of the duo Fly To The Sky. He started making his own solo music in the mid 2000s, because he wanted to show his own style and gain more respect as an artist.

December 18th, 2008 Casker released their forth album: Polyester Heart

Casker (캐스커) is a indie electronic duo formed in 2002. The duo consists of lee Yung Jin and Lee Jun-oh. They met trough friends in the indie scene. Jun-oh had already made music under the name Casker, but only released one album as an solo act. They later joined the label Pastel Music. The have since made many OST’s for dramas.
