might as well tell the story behind that
so, my dad’s birthday is coming up, and since he doesn’t text, ever (he’s luddite that way), i text my mom: “hey, can you ask dad would like for his birthday?”
her response is “well he really likes your animals, why don’t you draw (our real-life dog) in that style?”
now bear in mind my mom doesn’t get what i do, or my dad for that matter, so i figure that she doesn’t understand the ramifications of that suggestion. she doesn’t quite see how slapping two hands and a pair of breasts on our real-life dog would be fucking weird. but note also that it was a suggestion that she came up with, not him, so i reply:
“can you just ask him yourself”
she responds “i was just giving you an idea, why don’t you ask him”
“he never texts”
“i will tell him to text you”

Sun Tzu is so fucking funny to me because for his time he was legitimately a brilliant tactician but a bunch of his insight is shit like "if you think you might lose, avoid doing that", "being outnumbered is bad generally", and "consider lying."
My personal favourite is his lengthy lecture on the subject of Supplies Being Very Important I Cannot Stress Enough The Importance Of Protecting Your Supply Lines But Also Supply Lines Are Expensive As Shit So Steal The Enemy’s Supplies At Every Opportunity.

One of the more important things to consider about any historical work is the audience it was published for. The Art Of War was aimed at fancy nobles high on philosophy with little practical military experience who were nonetheless leading armies.
Sun Tzu, after desperatly trying to explain extremely basic logic to a bunch of upper-class twits, basically sat down and wrote the most elaborate "As per my last email" ever
the art of war is tedious and irritating when you read it as like, immortal prose by the most brilliant man ever to kick ass. but it’s incredibly fucking funny when you realize that sun tzu had to write every single one of those entries because someone somewhere did not know this ahead of time and made a really, really expensive oopsie doodles.

Oh my god you can see him really acting natural with it, going where he wants, stopping and looking around, not confused or clumsy with it. they really gave this turtle a little mobility aid it took to.

One of my roommates cannot stand the way I play minecraft
Instead of looking for diamonds, fighting mobs, trying to go to the nether, doing potions/enchantments/whatever, I like to build these 1-block-wide platforms far above the ground that i walk on to explore without getting lost, attacked or generally inconvenienced. And they hate it
“If you don’t want to get lost just use a compass!” Takes redstone. Also I don’t want to. And on the ground there’s mobs
“Fight the mobs, they’re part of the game!” no. I get scared
“Just use mine carts!” And use all that iron?
“Then use boats and ice!” You need enchantments to collect ice. All my paths take is dirt and ladders (and torches)

I will say as someone with a fair bit of experience in hypnosis (both the fictional and IRL variety) I have to commend you and Lily on that scene with Anduin as very reflective its dark side. Because I know that there are monsters in that realm already: ones with no respect for what an extreme power dynamic like that entails, only using it to assert dominance. So someone like Anduin doing what he did- and plans to do- is unfortunately believable. Especially with the power to force it on others.

That’s unsettling.
As someone who was a victim of the dark side of hypnosis, it is a very traumatic experience. Like, guided meditation sends you into a panic attack kind of trauma. It’s awful to go through. And I was one of the lucky ones.

I’ve been thinking about it and I’ve decided to share my experience since it may help some people. It could also shed light on an issue with hypnosis. CW for sexual assault and hypnosis related trauma. The first big thing I need to get out of the way is to dispel two big misconceptions. These misconceptions are that you can’t pull yourself out of hypnosis and that a hypnotist can make you do things that you are uncomfortable with. The reason these need to be dispelled is because when you’re hypnotized you are in a state of heightened suggestibility. If you hold these misconceptions when hypnotized you will actually make them true for you. When I was hypnotized I knew I could pull myself out of it but I still believed that you could be forced to do things that make you feel uncomfortable. When I got hypnotized it was my first time. And I was interacting with him via text on discord. When I got hypnotized the first thing the hypnotist did was put in a trigger and then bring me out of the trance. The next thing he did was put me right back into the trance using the trigger words and try to make me do sexual things for him. I was able to force myself out of the trance. I immediately called a friend to help pull me out. When he found out I wasn’t fully under, the hypnotist started spamming the trigger words in our chat. In all honesty, if anything had been different he either would have succeeded or caused more damage to me. After I was out enough to block him I talked to my friend for awhile to provide me an anchor to get the rest of the way out of the trance. A different friend, who I then found out is a hypnotist, removed the trigger words. I first found out I had trauma about a year later when I was an audience volunteer for a carnival hypnosis act. It sent me into a panic attack. I later figured out that anything that was guided and meant to make you relaxed also triggered panic attacks. I’ve gone through therapy to help with that. The biggest things that can help you avoid the situation I went through are researching the hypnotist ahead of time and, regardless of why you’re doing hypnosis, have people you trust there during the session. If he had been a more skilled hypnotist or I didn’t have the help of @hermione494 and @krisdenger I know it would have gone a lot worse for me.

It was. But hopefully someone will see this and be able to avoid what I went through. I’m still working through the trauma that caused, but I’m getting better. It definitely takes time, but I’ve gotten to a point where guided relaxation no longer causes me to have panic attacks.
Hi! With Ender’s okay, I’ll expand upon this issue. I’d like to say first that we’re very lucky that the hypnotist was a very inexperienced predator, though predator he was.
It isn’t entirely true that you cannot be made to do things you are unwilling, or that you can always bring yourself back. An experienced hypnotist can guide someone into deeper layers. Lull you gradually, step by step into things you aren’t comfortable with, or even vehemently goes against your beliefs by bringing you to intermediate steps. Halfway points, if you will.
This takes awhile, and either he felt he didn’t have the time, he was impatient, or he was not experienced enough to know to do this.
As you may have guessed, I was the ‘friend hypnotist’ in this situation. Though I had not practiced much, I had plenty of personal study into the field, and it was fortunate that Aki brought Ender to me when she did.
I cannot undo a trigger on my own without knowing the trigger. I was not experienced enough, and that takes more time than I had, in order to find the trigger and remove it. What I could do was provide another trigger.
Hypervigilance is not voluntary, but it isn’t difficult to set a trigger for it. I brought Ender to a lower state (trance is not quite the correct term, as this implies a much lower level of cognizance) and got Ender to memorize the feeling itself. Remember, and hold onto it, so that if she was brought to this type of state in the future, it would trigger a hypervigilant reaction, and she would reawaken.
This has consequences. And though it certainly helped her, possibly even outright saved her, I am not an expert. She would go on to have nightmares from the experience, and panic attacks at the memory.
My personal guilt tells me that I was responsible, but my lack of knowledge means that I couldn’t know for sure. Ender still needed therapy, and to see a real professional in the field to remove all of the things that were done to her, both from myself and the predator, and finally help to resolve this trauma.
My biggest issue is that the Discord Server that she met this Predator in has not, to date and as far as I’m aware, done anything in regard to this unsightly and frankly demonic individual, nor have they implemented rules or warnings imploring new members not to go into private chats with members that they do not know. I realize that to most, this sounds obvious.
But it isn’t to everyone. And even if it is, we all have lapses in judgement that can cause us to forget these types of precautions. If they are reading now, or anyone wants to start a group like this in the future, please make this a top rule. Enforce it, and remind people to follow it. It can save lives.
