ALL. OF. THIS.
mutuals can always dm me but be warned i talk like your coworker who is trying too hard to get to know you and my response times are akin to the response times you might get if we were communicating by letter
Just spent 45 minutes researching what a specific street in a city smells like in october so i could write the word "damp." the word is in the final draft. it is doing its job. it cost me 45 minutes and a mild obsession with historical weather records. worth it. the word is perfect. you would not believe how hard i worked on that word.
I once spent weeks researching medieval festivals and winter celebrations only to write a few paragraphs about the characters having a nice dinner in their home.
One of the best things about being a writer is thinking of something small you can add to your work that’s just. Devastating. Like you’re sitting there going. Oh. That would be diabolical. People would get really riled up about that. Exquisite. Let’s do it.
It's Pride month! If you're a new follower and aren't familiar with my work yet, or are looking for comics to read, check out...
O Human Star: my 2012-2020 webcomic about an inventor who wakes up in a robot body after being dead for 16 years and seeks out his former partner and the young android who shares a copy of his mind.
Meal: an aspiring chef moves to town, meets a cute girl, and tries to get hired at a restaurant that specializes in insect cuisine. Written with my friend Soleil Ho.
Across a Field of Starlight: two nonbinary teens from two very different spacefaring societies meet by chance and stay in touch even as a galaxy-spanning war threatens them both.
Adversary: A former women's self defense instructor stumbles into a messy relationship with a former student who has since transitioned. My covid-era feel-bad book. Adults only.
I also have digital versions of comics I've made over the years at my itch.io and Patreon, and signed books in my store. Thanks for your support, and happy Pride!
It is, once again,
“There’s a cure?!” asked the girl that kills everything she touches. “Hey shut up we’re perf” replied the girl that makes clouds.
For real though. Storm has stopped an entire tsunami before. “Makes clouds my ass” she can conjure lightning and tornadoes and is revered as a god in her tribe. She literally changes atmospheric pressure and that’s how she flies. So fuck you. Storm is flawless.
I think you missed the part where the GIRL WHO KILLS EVERYTHING SHE TOUCHES wants to NOT KILL EVERYTHING SHE TOUCHES and everyone dismisses her incredible misfortune just because the lady who is the AVATAR OF THE STORM won the fucking SUPERPOWER LOTTERY
And here we see X-Men perfectly illustrating the disparity between the larger disability community (Storm) and the chronic illness community (Rogue). One wants society to accept & respect them & their various different needs, which is surely a noble cause, while the other would like to NOT BE IN PAIN EVERY FUCKING DAY, which is just as important but often gets shouted down by non-ill disabled people who only want to talk about disability as a social construct.
Why both the social model and medical model are useless on their own, both are needed to fully understand disability justice.
Shout-out to aromantic people whose lives are so fucking busy that they periodically forget what day of the week it is. today is Wednesday, June 5th. Happy Aromantic Visibility Day.
Today is Thursday, June 5th. Happy Aromantic Visibility Day.
It's June 5th again!
This will never NOT be funny
I’m so glad this is on tumblr
My favourite thing about this is, he didn’t even have to call him ‘Captain’ he could have used the screen-name but he was SO MARRIED TO THE IMMERSION that he DID.
Passenger: CAPTAIIIIN!!!
Captain: y-yeah?
Passenger: LOOOOOOOK!
(FULL BLAST PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN MUSIC)
my fav.
Didn’t they use this as an actual ad later?
i think when u clean your house it should stay clean forever. what do u mean i have to do it again
you should get a second evening for reading fan fiction. And you should get an extra day in the week to do arts and crafts.
Dialogue Beats & How People Actually Talk List!!
𐙚⋆.˚ Trailing off mid-sentence and not finishing the thought
𐙚⋆.˚ Answering a question with a question to buy time
𐙚⋆.˚ Laughing before saying something painful
𐙚⋆.˚ "I'm fine" said in twelve completely different ways
𐙚⋆.˚ The pause before a name that carries a whole conversation in it
𐙚⋆.˚ Repeating the last word someone said while processing
𐙚⋆.˚ Starting a sentence three times before finishing it
𐙚⋆.˚ Saying "no, yeah" vs. "yeah, no" (opposite meanings)
𐙚⋆.˚ The overly casual voice when asking something they desperately care about
𐙚⋆.˚ Talking faster when nervous, slower when trying to control the room
𐙚⋆.˚ The subject change that's so obvious it becomes its own confession
𐙚⋆.˚ "It's fine" vs. "It's fine" vs. "...it's fine"
𐙚⋆.˚ Going very quiet and polite when actually at their most dangerous
𐙚⋆.˚ Agreeing just to end the conversation
𐙚⋆.˚ Using someone's full name vs. nickname as a power shift
𐙚⋆.˚ Apologizing for things that aren't their fault out of habit
𐙚⋆.˚ The "anyway—" that means I'm done being vulnerable now
𐙚⋆.˚ Jokes as deflection (always)
𐙚⋆.˚ Saying the brave thing, then immediately walking it back
𐙚⋆.˚ The sentence that stops just before the word that would mean too much
Adding to that, I feel sometimes people do talk in a giant run-on sentence (bonus points if they’re jumping all around to different topics), especially when they’re mad.

I finally read ND Stevenson's new book Scarlet Morning (I had to wait for the copy at my library) and why isn't there a huge tumblr fandom for it??!
Fun pirate story that veers into cosmic horror! Amazing eerie worldbuilding! Hot older pirate lady who's not what she seems! Illustrations! Lore that we need to be discussing the mysteries of! Tension between siblings and found family!
Also the color version of this illustration is beautiful! Look at this! (found on ND's tumblr)
And the prose
Can I post a page from the beginning of the cosmic horror section here? This one reads more like a Night Vale segment but they become genuinely scary.
Fun middle-grade pirate adventure -> oh this worldbuilding isn't just quirky it's really cool -> Holy cod there's Horror in here! -> btw there's also still humor -> fascinating lore -> Who was Scarlet Morning??!!
Go read Scarlet Morning and talk to me about it!!
My 10 year old son read this to his dad and I and OMG is it good!
Happy Pride Month! (Enjoy some Chrono Trigger Headcanons!)
I love The Golden Girls.
Ya’ll don’t have any idea how fucking brave and needed these plot lines were.
This was before Ellen came out.
This was before civil unions.
This was before Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
This was when your ass could be fired, blacklisted, and shunned with no legal protections for even being hinted at being gay.
And the Golden Girls said “Fuck you, Fuck this, we’re doing it anyway.”
I think it should be noted that Blanche’s quote about AIDS is also “It is not god punishing people for their sins” and that the episode also deals with slutshaming.
I don’t know if people realize how much activism these women did for gay right and during the aids crisis. If you think about it they were all long established in Hollywood and Broadway. They had tons of friends personally affected and dealing with the aids crisis. Estelle Getty lost a nephew. I think they helped plant seeds in people who watched Golden Girls that helped make things a little more normalized and mainstream.
