I was wondering, if you could, what one change about the main four girls would you make to make them perfect for you? This can be something done in the volumes, a design aspect, or something about their backstory? I’d love to hear your take!
Oh God, just one thing? There’s so many different things that make Team RWBY really bad to me right now, but I suppose if I have to choose:
Ruby: Build up her emotional connection to Summer. The main reason that her break down when Salem said she killed her mother didn’t connect properly is because Ruby doesn’t know her mother. Over the past seven years, Ruby had talked about Summer once to Qrow and had a conversation at her grave in V3. That is not enough to justify such a strong connection to a person who died when you weren’t even old enough to talk. Doesn’t count that Ruby was down for all of five seconds and then back on her feet with no lasting effect.
Minor one, give her back her V1 voice. I have no idea what made Lindsey decide it was a good idea to change it to a high pitched screech but I hate it and it just sounds so phoned in and fake. Her original voice was fine.
Weiss: Okay, Weiss is best girl and there isn’t much about her that annoys me personally anymore since she is still going strong in characterization and story, but whooo boy. I’d change her stance in the group regarding Ozpin and the whole lying plot line in v7. It doesn’t sit right with me that she would plant doubt in Winter’s mind that Ironwood isn’t being 100% honest with her when Weiss herself is not being 100% honest with her.
But also the ending to her abuse plot. Take out the comedy, give it the catharsis it deserves, and have Weiss actually work towards bringing Jacques rather than just running across Willow and conveniently have security cameras installed that conveniently caught Jacques with Arthur and that Jacques conveniently didn’t know about.
Very minor one compared to the others, but change her Mistral and Atlas outfits. Her Mistral one is fine save the colouring being dull, so change it to white. But her Atlas one is just ugly and impractical. Scrap it completely and try again, and have Weiss be the one to cut her hair.
Blake: Have her be an orphan. The worst thing that happened to the Faunus Racism Arc is that they had the main character in it, the one we are meant to side with as the viewers, be a privileged princess with loving parents and a mansion in an ethnostate. Blake obviously lived there since she knew where it was in V4, and now it just makes her cries about oppression and racism seem hollow because she hasn’t dealt with that shit, especially compared with not only the Faunus around her like Ilia, Sun and Adam, but even compared to her human team mates.
Yang and Ruby were raised by a single father suffering from severe depression, with their mother having died when they were children and Yang’s biological mother abandoning her. The uncle is an alcoholic who is hardly there because he’s always on missions for Ozpin, so they don’t know when he would come back.
Weiss was raised in a wealthy family, but her father is an abusive narcissist and her mother is an alcoholic who became emotionally shut down and didn’t do anything to protect her children from the abuse. Add on top that Weiss likely didn’t have any meaningful friends before she came to Beacon, and she had led a very lonely life.
Now compare that to Blake, who was raised in Menagerie, in a mansion, with two loving parents. She went into the White Fang to fight for her people, and experienced violence and abuse under Adam after she ran away from her parents, but there is nothing wrong with her home life. It makes Blake seem disingenuous and this isn’t someone I can get behind as right for Faunus racism when she hasn’t suffered it, especially since she can wear her bow and get away from it all. Erasure isn’t a privilege, but it’s more than what Sun, Velvet and Adam get.
Yang: Take her out of the White Fang story line, and actually have her suffer consequences for being a hypocritical liar. This Yang is not the Yang I fell in love with. Her PTSD arc is a joke, she’s hamfisted into a story line that had nothing to do with her, she is meant to be overprotective big sister to Ruby and yet leaves her behind or lets her do dangerous things without doing shit, she’s now not even a character, but rather one half of a ship.
All her flaws are highlighted and all her virtues are gone. She is aggressive towards Ozpin for keeping secrets and yet tells no one that Raven is the Spring Maiden, she believes the word of a murdering, manipulative woman who abandoned her for 19 years and was revealed to be a coward who could’ve seen her daughter any time, even when the record was set straight that Qrow and Raven wanted the power to turn into birds. She then later on believes that Robyn, a woman that she doesn’t know and was going against them constantly, more than the man who gave her shelter, food, licenses, and exciting missions that no one else would have the opportunity for. She calls Raven out for throwing everyone under the bus to protect herself, including her own family, but would draw her weapons on her own uncle just because he spoke up.
This is just a disaster, and for canon Yang, I want her to face consequences to her actions.
