i know it's insufferable when people do this on funny memes but i have to be that guy after peeking at the notes: if ibuprofen is not helping reduce your pain at all, this is because the source of your pain is not inflammation! ibuprofen (advil, motrin, etc.) is a NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) and targets your body's inflammatory response specifically, so if the source of your pain is not from this response (eg neuropathic), you are taxing your liver needlessly and need to try other avenues of pain relief that are not NSAIDs (naproxen/aleve and aspirin are included in this category-- and none of these should be mixed!). acetaminophen (tylenol/paracetemol/etc) is a pain-reducer and (put simply) instead targets the body's actual pain response and reception to it and would be the main OTC choice in lieu of NSAIDs. for some extra 'oomph' it can be safely taken in combination with any single NSAID at their daily recommended doses (because again, do not combine NSAIDs if you love your liver). there are unfortunately not a lot of great and safe OTC or script options for non-inflammatory pain, but nerve-related medication or corticosteroid shots are options to explore if you have healthcare access. throwing ibuprofen at the wall and hoping it sticks is not the solution, though!

drives me up a wall that safe use of OTC medication is not taught in school health classes, but if i can stop even one liver from failing or stomach from eroding, I've done my job

Small correction here: while combined NSAID use can hurt your liver in extreme cases/dosages, they're actually a bit more dangerous to your kidneys. They are definitely an inflammation killer though (they target COX enzymes that make prostaglandins which contribute to inflammation in a big way), and when your pain is due to inflammation they're really good. When it's not, Tylenol is a suitable alternative (it blocks a sub-type of COX enzyme, we're pretty sure, but specifically in the brain), but Tylenol is actually a bigger danger to your liver; make sure you take the recommended dosage and don't exceed the max. But overall, yes, livers and kidneys and stomachs should all be protected from poor OTC drug use!
