I have a whole essay swirling in my head about how Our Generation is thematically a criticism about 90s-era (in particular) mainland style parenting (with the romance storyline serving that theme), so this is a part of that (mostly because when will I ever have enough brain space to get my citations together for the whole thing).

The most obvious is Yingtao's career path (becoming a teacher so she could teach kids to be themselves, as opposed to go to a prestigious university), the fact that Yingtao still went to a good college with a good career, Qin Yeyun's whole arc (she opened up an online store with her dad who has a disability and became successful because it was something she and her dad could do together) -- in contrast with Jiang Qiaoxi's arc.

But I think the most tragic part of Jiang Qiaoxi's parenting/upbringing is that the boy was never a rebel. The Hong Kong arc -- the fact that he at 19/20 was willing to work 2 jobs and scrimp in addition to going to school full time just to pay off the hospital bills for his cousin, because his cousin (and his cousin's wife) were the only family members who showed him care and kindness -- really highlights that it's not his parents' expectations per se, but how they carried it out. I suspect the boy would have happily done the math olympiads and went to Beijing/Qinghua if his parents showed some level of care and warmth instead of pressure.

(for those wondering, this is actually one of the rare dramas where I think would have benefitted from the full 40 episode counts to flesh out the side characters to hone in on the themes. My biggest critique would be that I wished the rest of the Qunshan quad got more screentime to emphasize this theme. Zeng Lu - who wrote Minglan and Changsha and who I know is a good screenwriter - did her best to highlight the themes in a condensed format, but she was never big dramatic moments writer.)
