I work in retail and literally I personally find about a hundred dollars worth of stolen shit, evidenced by open boxes and stray spider wrap (a security device), thrown behind pallets of merchandise every week. We also throw away thousands of dollars of food a day, especially meat and produce.
My friendās brother-in-law is the regional loss prevention manager, aka the guy who is supposed to keep theft down on a regional level. He has confirmed that the store has insurance polices that cover a hundred percent of everything stolen, doesnāt matter if a 60 inch plasma tv gets stolen once every day, theyāre reimbursed by the insurance company.
And this myth that employers take theft out on the workers is propaganda meant to make you, the worker, not empathize with the shoplifter and therefore do extra unpaid work as store security.
Why would a company lay off workers because shit was getting stolen? If they lay off workers that equals fewer workers to satisfy the needs of the customer and also āpoliceā the store. Fewer workers in a building means higher thefts and fewer customers. Would you shop at a retail store that has long ass lines constantly?
The CEOs, the HQ bosses, the regional managers, the store managers, they are the thieves. They rob the workers directly. The workers are not paid, they are robbed. Every cent that goes to management is a cent stolen from the labor of the worker.
Iāve worked in retail for over 10 years and I have seen some weeks during Christmas season where dudes literally walked in grabbed a thousand dollar big screen TV in each hand and ran out the door with them. I can attest that not once ever have I or any other worker I have known, or any of the workers at my company who have been there since it opened its doors, have ever been negatively impacted because of theft unless they were the ones stealing or if they were helping someone to steal.
If your boss is telling you this shtick about theft impacting the workers they are lying and I wouldnāt expect anything less.
