Niles and Smg0 being Smg3’s mentors and Smg1 and Smg2 being Smg4’s mentors makes sense to me because for Smg3, Niles and Smg0 are the ‘odd ones out’ in terms of SMGs, given that Smg0 didn’t have a partner before and Niles was created artificially. As for Smg4, Smg1 and 2 are the ‘standard’ of SMGs, where their bond is close and they use their powers effectively and efficiently.
Smg4 would like the normalcy and standard that Smg1 and 2 set and it would motivate him, while Smg3 would find comfort in how he’s not alone in being out of the norm for SMGs which would boost his confidence which in turn would allow him to improve on his skills.
