The Count of Monte Cristo (the book) has such a funny version of the dracula problem. In the first third of the book we, the readers, get a very detailed picture of how Edmond Dantes gets his whole life ruined, becomes the Count of Monte Cristo, and concocts the most convoluted revenge plot in literature. But after that, the book switches over to the perspective of characters that did not read the first third of the book and broadly misapprehend the Count's deal and what kind of book they're in. There's even a character that straight up thinks the Count is a vampire.

Am I confused? I distinctly remember learning the alphabet and counting in kindergarten, so 5 years old, and while I was certainly reading chapter books at 8, I was also skipped a grade at that age and most of my class was only barely starting to get to those. Have they changed the standards in the last mumblety years?

No the standards haven't changed, but the style of parenting has. I work with junior primary children and the number of them that arrive at school without knowing how to count to ten or recite the alphabet, let alone hold a pencil or a pair of scissors is rather appalling. Some of these children have been to childcare prior to starting school and yet... I do wonder if parents of these children ever sit with their children to colour in or cut out, make craft, and most importantly read together.

My kid was born right before Covid/quarantine so we didn’t have the option of preschool or anything until he was almost ready to start kindergarten. We would go for walks each day down to the park, where I had written the entire alphabet and the numbers from 0-10 in chalk on one of the sidewalks. I eventually added various shapes and colors. We would walk down there and I would use a stick to point at things and he would identify the number/color/shape. It was a way to pass the long days and I figured he’d learn a bit along the way.

The first week of kindergarten I was talking with the grandma of one of my son’s classmates. She was SHOCKED at what they expected the kids to know at this point. She was like “They expect him to know his numbers and letters! He’s only SIX, when was he supposed to learn this stuff???” Meanwhile, I’m standing there with my kid who is a full year younger than her grandson and he was on the cusp of READING when he started kindy. I was like “how does he NOT know this stuff yet? Don’t you guys have little board books or activity toys that teach him these things? Do you ever read with or to him? Do you ever just…..try to teach him ANYTHING?” And of course the answer was, “well I mean, he has an iPad…..he probably watches some educational stuff once in a while.” So, not only do you give your kid unlimited access to YouTube, you don’t monitor to make sure he’s at least watching educational videos??? And then you throw your hands up in confusion over why he’s not reading or even knows the alphabet at SIX???? It broke my heart because this kid would come over for sleepovers and my son, a year younger than him, would read the bedtime stories to him and this kid was just…..fascinated with my sons ability to read. He would beg for story after story and when we would drive around, he’d point at things and ask me to read them, and eventually he would start to sound it out “c-c-ca-ca-car? W-w-wa-wash? Car wash? Is that it? Did I get it right???” And he’d be SO EXCITED. He wanted to learn so badly, and his family was just like “eh, here’s a screen.”

The thing that is so troubling about home school moms being like “My kids aren’t meeting ANY of the educational markers they need to be meeting, and that’s OKAY!” is that even a public/private school education needs to be getting supplemented at home. We had a full set of Encyclopedia Brittanica (my god my parents must have sold their souls for that, we were so poor, how did we have that???) and if we ever asked a question at dinner that stumped our parents, over to the encyclopedias we went! When my brother would get in trouble and be suspended from school, he had to choose an historical figure and write a five page essay. Our parents encouraged our curiosity and would push us to take our schoolwork further. Doing a project for biology? Why not talk to this family friend who forages for and ID’s wild plants? Writing an essay on a famous photographer for art class? Let’s go up to one of the art galleries in town! Like, you need to be encouraging your kids at home, you can’t just send them to school and expect one teacher to give their full attention to 30 kids simultaneously, you know?

So when a homeschooling mom, who is only needing to be focused on her two kids, can’t even manage to meet the educational goals for two kids??? That’s not exactly fair to your little ones, now is it? If you can’t teach them, that’s fine. You can support and supplement what they learn at school. But if you are going to commit to homeschooling, you need to FULLY COMMIT. You are your children’s SOLE SOURCE of education and you are FAILING THEM. It’s not cute, it’s not tradwifecore, it’s not funny. You are robbing your children of opportunities to succeed, you are dumbing down a nation other people have to live in, and you are contributing to the overall idiocy of our world.

Educate your damn kids. Educate your damn SELF. Recognize that we live in a society and we need all our citizens to be educated to the best of their ability in order for our society to function at its best. This deliberate disregard of education ought to be punishable by forced enrollment in the nearest school for the kids and a solid whack over the head with a ruler for the parents.
