I like this scene so much. Here you have John, well knowing that he does not have a thing for normal friends, in denial. He is forced to face a part of himself he’d rather be ignorant of because it’s the one that can, and has, caused him so much pain.

Here Sherlock is the one who has to show John something about being human. Being a human means you get hurt. John is like a little kid asking his father why the world is so unfair.

And Sherlock takes the risk of trying to explain to John, well knowing it will make him angry. Nevertheless Sherlock takes the risk because he cares so much about John that he will not let Mary be the one doing it, as this may result in the two of them splitting up.

Sherlock saves John and Mary, and this not for the last time.
