sexism in medicine kills people. racism in medicine kills people. fatphobia in medicine kills people. queerphobia in medicine kills people. classism in medicine kills people. ableism in medicine kills people.
do not downplay people’s fears about being mistreated because they are a part of a marginalised group. it is a matter of life and death and you should be angry about it.
I have a degree in medical sociology and I cannot stress this enough
tumblr: constantly be aware of your own privilege. constantly be aware of your capacity of be evil. hey i know you really like that new piece of media but make sure you're aware of all of the problematic elements all the time. hey i noticed you reblogged a post from a designated Bad Person so please make sure you do a thorough background check on everyone you reblog from to make sure they're not bad, otherwise people might get the wrong idea about you. always be aware of everything bad that's happening in the world all the time because silence is violence. i see you not reblogging this post btw. activist burnout is a privilege so be aware of that. xyz people are required to reblog this post. if you're not constantly fighting against designated Bad People you are inherently complicit and therefore a Bad Person.
people with ocd:
I learned a lot as a teenager on tumblr, but damn the way the internet will leech the joy out of everything. As someone who does activism in the real world, I can confidently tell you that nobody gives a fuck about your love of a “problematic” fandom. Nobody cares if you accidentally reblog something from a weirdo, or if you don’t reblog every single post about the latest human rights travesty. Ship and reblog and enjoy yourself to your heart’s content, and understand that this shit — not that deep. Tumblr isn’t real.
What’s real is what you do when your friend is sick, or your classmate is struggling, or your grandma needs a ride. It’s taking accountability when you hurt someone’s feelings or fuck up at work. Or taking care of yourself and trusting that you are worth knowing, even if you’re not 100% perfect. You have to give yourself grace as well as holding yourself accountable, and be willing to do the same for others.
Right now I’m working on grassroots organizing. In Alabama. It’s hard. People have all kinds biases and hang ups and prejudices that you have to navigate. They may say and do things that really let you down. But in real life, the unhinged standards of tumblr ethics will only hurt you. If you want to make a difference in the world, you have to accept other people’s imperfections and meet them where they are. Instead of cutting people out when they screw up, meet it with compassion and model better behavior.
I’m not saying you have to be a doormat and put up with everything. I don’t. But there’s no hard and fast rule on deciding who is willing enough to learn and who isn’t. Everyone is an individual, and you’ll have to approach the relationship differently. You’re gonna cut people out you regret, and keep people around you wish you didn’t. But that’s life.
If we go around shunning and shaming people for every minor quirk or mistake, and build spaces around fear and shame and conformity, how are we different than what we claim to be fighting? Thinking critically about your media is great. Understanding your privileges and how you benefit from others’ oppression is essential. Doing your best to make ethical decisions is the standard. But I’m an atheist for a reason y’all, and I did not sign up for all this shame and guilt nonsense. You wanna be ethical and an ally? Get off the this fucking app and go volunteer at an organization you like. Call a friend or family member. DoorDash dinner for your friend who can’t get out right now. And please please please do something you enjoy. We can’t fight fascism if we’re too busy fighting over anime.
On Dentists
So I can’t brush my teeth. Like, it’s the worst kind of hell. I went to the dentist for a cleaning today and I told the hygienist this, and she was wonderfully helpful.
There are some incredibly soft toothbrushes available- namely, post-surgical brushes. Running them under hot water makes them even softer.
She told me that you don’t really need to use toothpaste- it’s mostly marketing. The foam gets to me, so that is really reassuring.
She gave me two particularly soft brushes and some xylitol gum. Trident is a market brand of xylitol gum, which helps with your teeth and can make your breath smell better.
The whole purpose of brushing is to disrupt plaque buildup. You don’t need to brush twice a day, every day with toothpaste if you brush correctly- little circles, focusing on near the gums (where most plaque builds up). So if you’re having a bad sensory day and can’t brush at all, it’s not the end of the world.
Hell, you don’t even need a toothbrush if even the post-surgical ones are too harsh. Going over your teeth with the same motions using a washcloth is enough.
She wants to find a fluoride rinse that has a taste I can stand (peppermint is the only mint I can stand) but she’s not particularly worried about it.
I go to Dr. Barr in Chicago. If you can get to the State St. Macy’s, his office is nearby. He’s very kind and patient and really understanding of my needs as an autistic person. The hygienist, I don’t know her name, announced everything she was going to do before she did it, and stopped frequently to see how I was doing.
This is really the only positive dentist I’ve ever had- past dentists have been too rough and not bothered to help find ways I can actually brush.
Basically this is a glowing recommendation for Dr. Barr’s office if you’re autistic, afraid of dentists, or have sensory needs. This is a recommendation even if you don’t have any of those things.
Im actually crying i feel like this post was reblogged for me oh my god oh my god oh my lord thank you
You can also dilute your mouthwash and use it to swish around if it burns. My dentist does this so consider it dentally approved
If you were feeling guilty about your brushing habits, either due to sensory issues, pain, allergies, executive dysfunction, or just plain fatigue, here’s what you need to know about what is and isn’t necessary if your dental care!
Post-covid, I got really horrible shit going on with my gag reflex where for some reason the mint flavor of toothpaste (and only toothpaste) would make me gag so hard that I’d throw up. Then I found a kids toothpaste that’s like strawberry flavored or something, but it has the proper adult amount of flouride, so it works for me and I don’t gag much anymore. Here’s an article with some options if you’re like me lol
Dr. Gemma Wheeler lists best non-mint toothpaste options for adults. The list includes those that are truly non mint, without oils or aromas
Also for the people who can’t stand foam, the ingredient you’re looking to avoid is called SLS.
I share this frequently, but I had a very difficult time making myself floss because I hated the way that standard floss digs into my fingers when I use it. I switched to floss picks, and boom: A hated activity instantly became entirely neutral. Much easier to convince myself to do! If you have the same problem with standard floss, this might be worth a try.
Also, my most recent trip to the dentist, I was told that xylitol is a very effective treatment for dry mouth! And also that dry mouth is bad for your teeth, because it can disrupt the PH balance in your mouth, making your teeth more susceptible to cavities. While you want to be very careful to keep any xylitol products away from dogs in particular and probably pets in general, if you have dry mouth, you can try checking for products with xylitol in them.
Of note: My brother endorses the OraNusre brand of flavorless toothpaste; he says it “tastes like toothbrush”. My mom, meanwhile, is a fan of the Hello brand, which comes in different fruity and sweet flavors. Both of these are listed at the non-mint toothpaste link above.
If you prefer a toothpaste or a mouthwash for dry mouth, I use Biotène; it’s not cheap, but brushing once a day with it, a tube of Biotène toothpaste lasts me around four to five months. As far as I’m aware, it’s only in mint flavor.
If you hate mouthwash because it burns, there’s actually non-alcohol based mouthwashes that’s don’t have that problem! They’re very mild and much more sensory friendly than the other kind
If you have small teeth you can use a kids or toddlers toothbrush! They’re softer, easier to hold, and sometimes have smaller heads if you gag easily. I’m autistic and physically disabled, so I struggle with the time/motor skills of brushing, and I use a three sided toddler toothbrush! I like the Fridababy brand since it’s available at most Walmarts.
Instead of being flat, hard plastic, the head is rounded and rubber to hug the teeth. The bristles are super soft and the added coverage gives me a much better clean. I still do my gums and teeth individually most days, but if I’m not feeling well or in a hurry one pass through is good enough since it covers more.
I brush without using my hands and find the suction cup on the bottom of the handle is good for keeping it where I can reach. I can pick up and set it down without struggling to get it upright and back in my mouth or getting toothpaste on the counter. The suction cup kids brushes in general are better for that, especially if you’re like me and get freaked out by the head touching things. The handle on the Fridababy is also thick and rubber, so definitely better than a regular brush if you have poor grip strength. One is like $8, but worth it for me.
The washcloth method also works in a pinch and saves money and plastic. As long as you can get all the way back it’s fine.

I know someone who would have a suggestion.
@isuggestlandback
Hey!! I suggest that!!
If your disability/neurodivergent activism and knowledge starts and ends at your own unique experience, then that's not activism or education, that's just looking out for yourself. And that's fine, but don't pretend that you are speaking for the disabled/neurodivergent community as a whole.
If you are able bodied and neurodivergent, you should be listening to, educating yourself about, and looking out for physically disabled people.
If you have low support needs, you should be listening to, educating yourself about, and looking out for people with high support needs.
If you are mentally ill or disabled, but otherwise privileged in any way (wealthy, white, man, cis, straight, etc) you should be listening to, educating yourself about, and looking out for people who are also marginalized in other ways.
You can't know everyone's experience in disabled/mentally ill community, but you can try to learn from others within it. We are strongest when we work together.
Looking for some advice on adulting with cyclic vomiting syndrome!
So I’ve had CVS since I was two, and I have a pretty good understanding of how it works for me. But I’m in my last semester of undergrad, trying to figure out jobs and housing and grad school, and the stress is super high. I got some virus like a month ago and now I can’t get my episodes under control. I’ll feel ok for maybe a day or two, and then it starts up again for another 3-5 days. I’ve had symptoms probably 5 days a week since February.
I’m not usually bad enough that I can’t go to work and class, I usually don’t actually vomit too much anymore, but I’m so worn down and exhausted. I can’t even think, and the light sensitivity is making it hard to read screens. Anyone have advice on keeping them at bay longer than a couple days? I usually only have one episodes for 1-3 days every other week.
For context: I also have a physical disability called Arthrogryposis that kinda looks similar to SMA, so I use a power chair and need help with my personal care.
My CVS symptoms are: severe nausea, headaches, light sensitivity, retching, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, anxiety/panic, fever or fever like symptoms, dizziness, and shakiness.
Triggers are skipping or delaying meals, stress, sleep schedule changes, respiratory illnesses (especially Covid), too much salty / processed foods, and too much screen time.
Things that help: Zofran, bland carby foods, high moisture foods, hot showers, eating small meals super often (like snacking on Graham crackers or whatever), electrolyte drinks, screen breaks, and watching something relaxing.
here’s your daily reminder that ALL developmentally disabled adults deserve to be treated like adults
yes, even people with autism, downs syndrome, cerebral palsy, fetal alcohol syndrome, fragile x syndrome, tbi’s, AND/OR deafness/blindess
Shocking how few people in advocacy and activism truly believe this and practice this. Like they’ll say they do, but you put them in a room with people with I/DD, who are nonspeaking, or are Deaf or Blind? They have no idea how to act. Puts me really on edge because I know if I unmask and start stimming or something they’ll see me as incompetent or unprofessional.
It’s not just non disabled people, either. I see this from other people with physical disabilities, even other neurodivergent people. So frustrating trying to organize and be in community when even other disabled people can’t hang :/
If I have to hear another non disabled professor tell me how deinstitutionalization was a bad thing I’m gonna start running my chair through the walls like the fucking kool aid man
In case y’all missed it, there are Nation wide protests in the US. The protests outside an ICE facility in Portland have been going on for over 63 days now, and, because of the violent measures taken against protesters, have been costing the government roughly $1 million a day. These protests are to stop the US funded genocides in Gaza, Congo, and Sudan, and stop the brutality that ICE is inflicting on innocent people. There is no such thing as an illegal immigrant in a nation built upon stollen land and everyone should have the right to exist without threat of government sanctioned displacement or genocide. No one is free until we all are.
It’s not just that the leaves will break down on their own (and enrich the soil while they’re at it!). During the winter, all sorts of insects use leaf litter for shelter, and they’re the first food available to larvae in early spring. Leaves also insulate the plants under them during the winter, which is important if you’re in an area prone to frost heaving.
One of the best thing you can do for native pollinators in your area is Leave the Leaves!
My mom stopped raking her leaves when she found out about this but her neighbor used his leaf blower to clear out her yard the first year she decided to try. So she started posting a Leave the Leaves sign in the yard each year with an explanation about why it’s good and two winters later only one house still rakes their lawn each year.
We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the biodiversity in the neighborhood since. We have birds that we haven’t seen since we moved into the city from living rurally and those birds are starting to nest in the trees and gardens in spring. The swallows and bats are back at night. The single woodpecker we would only occasionally see visits daily and even has a friend that has joined it. We have more squirrels and rabbits and shockingly fewer moles and voles. We heard an owl outside last fall.
Leave the leaves indeed.
kh fandom has been talking a lot about kairi lately huh
btw it's extremely easy and fast to donate to the sameer project or even just spread the word if you can:
We are a donations based aid initiative for Gaza led by Palestinians,
I appeal to you all
Ibrahim is one of the Palestinians that I've known since the beginning of the genocide along with Nader. His father is currently in a grave situation as his cancer keeps spreading. With the murderous Zionists still keeping the borders close, it makes it all the more difficult for this young boy to help his father evacuate. But with the US regime now making significant changes in its political attitude towards the genocide, even putting the Settler state in a state of anxiety, there is still hope that Ibrahim can prepare to evacuate his father as soon as the border crossing opens.
Please donate to Ibrahim if you get the chance.
