How Can Star Wars Be So Good Even Though Itâs So Deeply Flawed And Narratively Inconsistent And Was Created By A Dumbass
[picture of Marcia Lucas in the editing room]
Seriously, stop everything youâre doing for the next twenty minutes and watch this video:
Although âGeorge Lucasâ has become synonymous with âStar Wars,â itâs really his collaboration with â and occasionally intervention from â the creative team surrounding him that helped launch the first movie into the stratosphere.
As the video points out, the movie that won all those Academy Awards â including, critically, the one for editing â was sculpted into its best-known and deservingly praised form by the editing team of Marcia Lucas (seen above), Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew.
If youâre at all interested in filmmaking or specifically the making of Star Wars, I canât recommend âHow Star Wars was Saved in the Editâ enough.
star wars heritage post
I say this as someone who loves the prequels and especially a lot of things that other people hate about them, they were wildly different because by that time, George Lucas was GEORGE LUCAS, CREATOR OF STAR WARS.
In the first trilogy, Carrie and Mark were rewriting their own lines on set, itâs common knowledge that the first film was completely saved in the edit. Thereâs a lot of things people did to help, push things in a better direction, or level things up that happened because there was space for collaboration or changes.
Iâm not saying I know anything about George Lucas and by and large he seems like a nice person. But when youâre on the set of the prequels, youâre not rewriting your own lines. No one is telling George Lucas no or saying oh well thatâs nice George but I have a better idea.
The prequels are their own thing and I love them but

Devon. The weapon of the Shadow.
.
Thinking on Devon as the apprentice of Maul and how it could look if there were a time skip of years in S2 of Maul Shadow Lord. I was inspired by a concept art of Darth Talon for the cancelled game of Darth Maul

we don't credit rebecca sugar enough for making the episode with the first gay wedding in a kids show extremely plot relevant so it could not be skipped or cut.
#rebecca sugar has gone on record saying that they knew from the beginning they wanted ruby and sapphire and they put every inch of planning#in to make sure that the studio could not take them out. sugar has said theyâd compromised on hundreds of things theyâd wanted for steven#so that they had the bargaining power specifically to keep ruby and sapphireâs relationship#and a number of âfillerâ episodes were created just to establish counter-arguments that might come up when they pitched the wedding episode#the one that comes to mind is the episode about steven and connie getting lost in roseâs room stevenâs central conflict about liking their#fave book seriesâ romantic ending was later weaponised when producerâs were like âoh but stevenâs a boy he wonât be too interested in them#getting marriedâ sugar was able to be like âno. in this episode itâs established he loves romance and specifically weddings. and in these#episodes itâs shown how much steven cares about ruby and sapphire and their relationship and happiness. you cannot convince me this is not#good and necessary plot development#and they wrapped it up in the season finale and the big climactic point of the diamonds finally coming to attack earth to make the#episode integral to the series no skipping it without confusion. and had ruby wear a wedding dress because international censors took#advantage of her design to give her a masculine va#and sugar made certain that everybody knew This was a queer love story that an entire town supported and admired and that any child watchin#it at home would know they are not alone and that that support is waiting for them out there somewhere#sugar sacrificed the wider story they wanted to tell for that and it was a horrible decision to be given but they made the right choice
These werenât even the biggest sacrifices. CN basically gave her an ultimatum and canceled the show for it. She knew this would likely happen and thatâs why season 5 is paced so fast. She could have had 2 more seasons but that wouldnât be worth it without ruby and sapphire
Yeah, they were given an ultimatum and they lost their show over this.
And they have said they stand by it.
I would love to see more Stephen from an independent studio or as a project that got to work on this kind of thing more freely.
Embrace the piercings Darkside, Devon.

Could just draw Maul with lots of jewelry, but considered it'd be too easyđ
So here we are.
This came to me in a dream, and I attempted to recreate it in ms paint (apologies for the quality). I swear this is how every interaction they have in clone wars feels.

Maul runs a syndicate while keeping himself out of the eye of the Empire.
The grey ex-Jedi Vesper Verkatta has survived the Purge only to plunge into the criminal underbelly of the Galaxy. For years now her bread and butter has been provided by selling secrets, by her beauty, by pretty lies. There are few depths she wonât sink to anymore.
She finds herself in the wrong room at the wrong time. They both know instantly what the other is. Force User. Threat.
Maul sees her as a potential asset. Vesper just wants to survive in a world that wants her dead. The Force wants to tie them together and never let them loose. But for what ends?
Iâve been enjoying this story so much and the smut is TASTYYYYYG
reading this fic where the new mando schools don't teach classical mando art anymore, and. idk. it's kinda fucked up and it kinda got me thinking. maybe it's because i'm an american who leans pacifist and strongly supports gun regulations, but the whole fanon where the new mandos can't possibly be real mandos simply because they're pacifists bothers me. because i think that's part of why satine exists in the first place--to draw attention to the fact that in a lot of the canon, Mando and Pacifist are contradictions. she exists to deconstruct some realistic implications of a "warrior culture," such as, well. sometimes people get tired of fighting.
the fact that mando fans make satine out to be an enemy of her culture--write her as someone leading what is essentially a cultural genocide--is very... meta, to me. satine represents an opportunity for nuance in a fictional culture that is primarily known for the cool armor and the badass fight scenes, but the fans like the armor and the fighting. and satine does not. so satine as a character/what she represents in-universe has become an enemy of what makes mandos interesting to the fans. and she is an enemy they can punish by stripping her culture from her, by taking away her history and her art and her context and making her out as a wannabe republic senator with fascist leanings.
satine exists to ask the question: is violence a necessary component of this culture? does being a mandalorian mean being a killer? and the fans by and large answered, yes.
(via @antianakin )
While obviously they didn't need to pick any particular group, I think the Mandalorians' very identity as a warrior culture makes this work. If you are making a point about not fighting anymore, Alderaan is probably not the right place for this narrative arc.
But I also really see the point of "creators needing to understand why fans like something before they change it". A real life group of people can change until they become nearly unrecognisable in the span of centuries without losing their identity/being conquered or scattered, and it's fascinating to study, but it's much harder, if not impossible to do in fiction (for example we all think about the Roman empire and its legions, but the constitution of Italy today states "Italy repudiates war." and it's a bit of a stretch, I know we're not like exactly the same as the romans, but that's part of the point, how hard is it to put things into a narrative)
So idk. Maybe there was a way to, say, keep the cool armours and create some sort of... martial arts type code of honour with less violence (ops, am I accidentally reinventing the Jedi? the Mandalorians would shoot me for this lol)? Some other evolution of what we as fans perceive as Mandalorian culture that doesn't feel as different? But then, would it have the same impact, and function within the pre existing plot (although it's SW, the pre existing plot can always change I guess)?
I actually just rewatched the âThe Lawlessâ arc where Pre Viszla and Maul take over Mandalore and of course with the caveat that this is like a 20 year old cartoon for kids, I literally thought to myself âwow this makes all the Mandalorians in this crowd scene seem like huge idiots and cowards.â
After like the briefest, mildest pirate/gang attack ever, the people of mandalore so quickly and easily turn on Satine and accept the death watch / whoever is in charge of them as their rulers. Like thereâs no way.
If Satine was on the run in her teenage years, almost everyone in the crowd that boos her and accepts Viszla would have memories of war. They would have been kids who had lost family members or adults who had fought or lost friends. Or as other people in this post and the comments mention, they might have been normal people trying to live their lives which is very inconvenient when the field youâre farming or the factory or office that you work in keeps getting blown up.
Iâm not sure there was a way to remedy this, their quick acceptance is I think more to move along the plot of Satineâs personal relationships and Maulâs bad guy goals, but it makes it seem like everyone in Mandalore is like YEARNING to go back to that violence when literally 5 minutes ago they were all walking around in their little bubble dome city being normal people. They were taking the bubble subway and going to school and buying groceries and living their lives.
Additionally I think itâs kind of shown as like the citizens feel like Satine canât protect them, but this doesnât make sense to me on so many levels but the ultimate one being: why is a society of supposed warriors so afraid for their safety that they will give up their freedom for it? I feel like this is supposed to maybe combat the first issue of how quickly death watch is accepted but instead it just makes the gap between what weâve seen and what weâve been told even bigger.
