I mean I’m very pro “watch what you want” and obviously not every show appeals to everyone but like it’s really interesting how we were all expected to watch wynonna earp, orphan black, the 100, in the flesh, supergirl, eyewitness, skam, scream, oitnb and countless other shows specifically for their white gay rep but when it comes to the get down, the bold type, queen sugar, claws, one day at a time, doubt, and dead of summer, which all have gay and/or trans characters of color, suddenly it’s “not your kind of show” despite being the same genre or style as something from the first list or you find some aspect of it irredeemably Problematic™ even though you’re willing to overlook much bigger offenses from other shows

I REALLY fucking hate the stereotype that Canadians are so nice and passive and apologetic about everything. The stereotype is more than just irksome to me; it’s damaging. It disregards the ugly realities of racism throughout the country, particularly towards Aboriginal people. 

I have witnessed way too much racism in this country to find the “nice Canadian” stereotype cute. The number of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls in my city alone is horrifying. The abuse and flat-out hatred is grotesque. 

Here in Canada, people are really good at not giving a shit about the well-being of another human being if that person happens to be Aboriginal. Here in Canada, people are so well-armed with their assumptions and stereotypes that they can’t even bother to see Aboriginal people as HUMAN. 

So no. Canada is not a magical land where everyone loves each other and says sorry constantly. That stereotype is insulting to every Aboriginal woman who is assaulted, goes missing, and/or is murdered. It’s insulting to the families of those missing and murdered women who seek justice and answers that they will never receive, simply because non-Aboriginal Canadians don’t give a damn.

Granny’s is almost plunged into darkness by the time Emma reaches the dinner, only one light switched on behind the counter, all the chairs on the tables for the night. Even from outside, she can see Killian behind the counter, cleaning some glasses. Her fingers tighten behind her back before, with a deep sigh, she opens the door. The bell sings happily above her head, Killian’s eyes meeting hers across the room. Emma’s heart beats faster as she forces a smile on her lips, one she hopes not to be too forced nor too fake.

“I got you a present,” she tells him as she makes her way toward the counter, careful to always keep her back to him. The words feel like ash on her tongue, but she doesn’t let that deter her. “Doing anything tonight?”

He puts the glass he was wiping down, before showing the counter to her with both hand and prosthetic. “Cleaning,” he tells her, as if it is the most obvious thing in the world. And it is. Ever since Ruby quit and took off to Kansas with Dorothy, Killian has been the one in charge of closing shop every night; cleaning and tidying up and making sure everything is in its place. Granny is too old for this, or so she says, but they all know it’s only an excuse so she can pay Killian a little bit more without turning it into a pity party.

Emma shakes her head at his answer, leaning one elbow on the counter while her other arm is still behind her back. “No, you’re done.”

Killian scoffs at her. “No way.”

“Cause we’ve got a date.”

His head snaps up, glasses and dish towel forgotten. “Okay.”

Finn Jones, Whiteboy Extraordinaire

I know that the last year or so has been rich in white audacity, but when it comes to TV representation, Finn Jones is really trying to take the damn cake. First of all, he’s starring in Iron Fist, which you probably already know is racist & Orientalist as fuck. And then he gets on Twitter and makes everything worse.

First of all, he had the fucking gall to retweet Riz Ahmed’s completely gorgeous, incisive, effective speech about the necessity of substantial gains in entertainment diversity. Considering the fact that Riz has been fighting throughout his career to not be typecast as a terrorist and when he did actually play a terrorist in a movie he almost had his arm broken in an airport by suspicious security guards, Finn Jones trying to use this as virtue signalling is insult to injury.

Then, Jones tried to argue with Asyiqin Haron (writer at Geeks of Color) about the racist nature of Iron Fist when she calls him out–and it was ugly. It had all the classics, including but not limited to the “YOU CAN’T JUDGE IT BEFORE YOU’VE SEEN IT!” argument and “UM ACTUALLY WE’RE SO DIVERSE!” spluttering.

Yeah, to quote: “I will go as far to say that it may be one of the most diverse shows out of the three.” That’s factually inaccurate on a NUMBER of levels–first of all, there’s 4 Netflix Marvel shows, just like there’s 4 Defenders–does he not even know his basic canon? Also:

HOW IS A SHOW LED BY THIS MAYONNAISE SMEAR GONNA BE MORE DIVERSE THAN LUKE CAGE?

Bless Asyiqin, she didn’t back down, so he ragequit and deleted his Twitter in hopes that would help. Apparently he needs to “stay focused” on acting.

Iron Fist is coming out soon, and please give it low ratings & boycott it. If you’re interested in watching some great martial arts, watch one of the Ip Man movies on Netflix. If you really want Iron Fist, then feel free to watch this fan-produced Iron Fist movie that stars an Asian woman. Also, stay tuned for Luke Cage season 2! Probably won’t be here for a while, but it’s been renewed for a second season, and frankly one single shot of Rosario Dawson’s perfect face is more valuable that the entire Finn Jones filmography.

Support Riz Ahmed. It’s not his fault that some whiteboy is trying to use him for cover, and already the media is trying to paint him as some kind of out of touch person, with headlines like “Star Wars Actor Riz Ahmed Says People Join ISIS Because Movies Lack Diversity” which is such a nasty and reductionist way to twist his words, it’s ridiculous.

It’s kinda hard to believe that it’s not a race thing when in actuality every single fandom calls an interracial ship even when it’s actually romantically canon, a “brotp”. Or when every flirtatious or romantic banter between a poc and a white character is disregarded as “sisterly” or “brotherly”  or “creepy and forced” by the fandom.

It’s hard not to believe it’s a race thing when every fandom vilifies a good-natured or normal poc while romanticizing the abusive white character. It’s hard to believe it’s not a race thing when every fandom accuses the poc when they’re affectionate towards a white character of being too aggressive or so platonic, but encourage abuse between two white characters and call it “romantic”. It’s hard to believe it’s not a race thing when every fandom treats a healthy interracial ship like it’s disgusting while freely and gleefully shipping incestuous white/white ships or shipping abusive white/white ships- which are always the most popular in every fandom.

It’s hard to believe it’s not a race thing when a show or film can be predominantly poc and the fandom still will only care about the 1 or 2 side white characters. It’s hard not to believe it’s a race thing when a poc can be fully fleshed out and the fandom still will make a white side character with one line the most popularly meta’d character.

It’s hard to believe it’s not a race thing when every poc is automatically labeled by every fandom as the “dad” of the group or the “mom” of the group for no reason other than to do away with every characterization of the poc so they can just be reduced to a simple trope so the fandom doesn’t have to care about them.

It’s hard to believe it’s not a race thing when every single fandom in existence treats poc characters and even poc actors the same exact negative way. They are always lesser than, always less than romantic, always less than a lead character, always less than relevant, to the white characters/actors in fandoms. When every fandom treats the main poc like a side character and the side white character like the main character.

It’s hard to believe it’s not a race thing when poc are stripped of any affection or dehumanized by every fandom especially when they get in the way of an incestuous or abusive white ship. When these microaggressions every fandom inflicts upon poc are in fact racist. But every fandom tells you it’s not a race thing even as they repeat the exact same negative and dehumanizing behavior of every other fandom towards interracial pairings and poc in general.

For men, yes please, we would prefer it if you avoided looking at our hair, and if we don’t have something to substitute as a hijab at that moment, anything you could lend us, a jacket, etc, would be very appreciated.

Also, since most girls avoid physical contact with men they’re not related to, please do not hug them, but rather shoo the offender away if you can, or at least escort the girl to a safe place. You can still offer words of encouragement and support. Furthermore, understand that the victim may not be very welcoming towards you because she’ll obviously be shaken, and won’t know where you are coming from. If that’s the case, please still give her something to cover herself (hijab is very important, think of it as someone ripping your shirt off) and stand some distance away until you are sure she’s in safe hands.

In this chapter, two pairs of True Loves are reunited for the first time. Cue to the audience going ‘awwww’? + AO3

Emma has never been comfortable around cops. Even when she had to work with them, after catching a perp and letting them handle the rest, her interactions with them were minimum. The reminder that they could never do anything for her – not find her identity, and absolutely not find her family – was too painful every time she caught a glimpse of the uniform, a flash of a car, the twinkle of a shiny badge. She would be cordial to them, but nothing more, flying away as soon as her job was done and waiting to collect the check.

Now, she finds herself staring at the beige uniform Graham is proudly handing her, his smirk both amused and mocking, and she forces herself not to poke her tongue out in disgust. She is an adult with responsibilities, and she will get even more of them if she accepts this, but she still refuses to look like she’s five seconds away from turning the music on and stripping in front of a group of frat guys.

She snatches the uniform shirt from him and holds it in front of her own body, tilting her head to the side. “You don’t need to dress a woman as a man to give her authority.”

His little smirk turns into a full grin and, not for the first time, Emma tells herself she could find him handsome if he weren’t twice her age. Old enough to be her father, and she’s never been into that kind of things – her daddy issues draw the line before that, apparently.

“So you think you can get people to do what you want in that red coat?”
