yea bud! i was on the grind nonstop for a few months until my body said haha watch THIS! and took me out of work for 3 weeks
Sometimes, it will take the rest of your life.
I can’t stress this enough. I wish I could get through to everyone I know. If you try to organise and be productive with every minute of your day, eventually, your body will pull the rug out from under you in a dramatic fashion, and you may end up being able to do very little at all, in a world that has no sympathy for people who need to rest.
So rest now. And work on making sure the people around you know it’s OK to rest.
And don’t feel guilty for resting. Practice telling yourself that rest - quality rest, where you’re not stressing about something you feel you ought to be doing - is actually a productive thing to do for your body.
You are an animal. You need to respect that animal’s needs. That includes laying about doing nothing as much as it does enrichment and running about.
Even your fucking computer gets overheated and slow if you don’t allow it to shut down and update sometimes (which is actually a lot of what sleep does for humans, btw). You eve notice how sometimes your browser just crashes sometimes because you have too many tabs open, or one of the tabs is causing the whole machine to run slowly?
So don’t tell yourself you want to work like a machine because guess what? Machines fucking fall over all the time if you overload them, try to do too many things at once, or don’t let them rest.
Rest knits up the ravelled edge of care.
If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will make time for your illness.

there is no medical component to a trans kid transitioning
if a little trans boy comes out to his parents & is like 4 all youd do for his transition is cut his hair, buy a new wardrobe, & switch pronouns & possibly change names
no one is gonna put a little 4 year old on testosterone OR puberty blockers until theyre actually about to start puberty & then they give them a few years to really decide if they want to start hormones
a trans kid existing isnt “child abuse.” child abuse is refusing to let your kid live their lives as they truly are & forcing them to present as a gender they arent
radfems who interact with this post will be blocked & your argument will not be read or even considered. i do not care about the opinion of a transphobe & my original post still stands.
a few years ago a kid in my preschool class transitioned socially and the only consequence was that as soon as her best friend discovered that changing your name is allowed she wanted to change hers to Detective
this site has one setting
I’m laughing, but there’s a super useful corollary, which my husband calls “the Red Balloon.” He was a defense lawyer and had a fair number of drug addicts come through, and there is a thing where if you’re like, on your first offense, they’ll do a thing where you can go to treatment and if you complete it they’ll take the conviction off your record. And he would tell his clients, “Look, everyone’s going to tell you not to do drugs. They’re going to say it over and over again. And it’s like, if people tell you not to think of a white elephant, you’re going to think of a white elephant. But the trick to not thinking about a white elephant is to think of a red balloon. So you need to find your red balloon. For some people it’s yoga. For others it’s woodworking. For some people it’s scrapbooking or gardening or any of a long list of things to do. They focus on that, it’s a lot easier to succeed in ignoring the white elephant.” So yeah, “watch yourself” is one thing… but the better idea is to watch something else. (Even if it’s fanfic about werewolves fucking.)
It’s a form of productive dissociation, and is super, super helpful. It’s easy for me to get bogged down in how much pain I’m in… but some of the most painful periods of my life have also been the most productive, writing-wise, because writing is one of my red balloons.
There is a phrase I use A LOT in my parenting and my son gets very sick of it, but it’s true:
The thing you practise is the thing you get good at.
You may not intentionally be practicing “being grumpy” but if you don’t put effort into practicing “not being grumpy” then I’m afraid that’s what you’re doing. It’s hard! It’s really hard! Sometimes, for some things, it’s pretty much impossible and that sucks!
But being carefully aware that you are going to get good at the things you do most of is a good way to be more careful of what those things are. If that makes sense.
You gotta appreciate sometimes how tumblr works in such a way that everyone who wants to reblog this interesting or useful psychological advice is also forced to reblog the thing about werewolf fucking
people on here like to be like “im immune to propaganda! im immune to capitalism!” im not. im totally not. every time im in line at a store and they have mini items or snacks or socks or something in the line i will 100% buy it. i know its a trap. im still going to do it
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a True Jedi. Not because he’s mastered himself and his emotions or anything (though, that, too) but because he’s a giant fucking nerd who wants to study literal brain worms and gets mad when Anakin stomps them to death and he probably thinks the height of a Saturday night is a grammar argument with another Jedi Master about some obscure text philosophizing on the Force. This is the only metric by which a True Jedi can be measured, I will accept nothing else.
Excuse you. True jedi are measured by how many Lego studs they collect.
This is the only correction I am willing to accept.
we'd be spared a lot of gifted kid discourse if some of you would just admit to yourselves that you grew up thinking you were superior to everyone else and now you're deeply insecure after realizing that you're not actually all that special
everyone in the notes like "that's what we were already saying" missed the point here entirely bc what im getting at is not just being disappointed in yourself for not living up to expectations. it's the unspoken part where "not living up to expectations" = "doing as well as people i always looked down on, working jobs that i thought were beneath me, still feeling bitter about it years later bc i havent let go of my elitism and i still kinda think i inherently deserve better"
i like that all the replies are assuming that im a jealous normie taking cheap shots at oppressed nerds bc i wish i was as special as them, but i regret to inform u that the reason i know all this is bc i grew up in gt programs and am speaking for my past self and a number of people ive known lmao. you can all get mad at me for pointing it out but you're lying through your teeth if you say this never happens.
anywhomst i said this bc i find it absurd that grown adults (yall are clowns for acting like im addressing children in this post lol) will spend so much time uncritically commiserating over how hard we supposedly had it, when we all know damn well that we had it the best of everyone in the whole system because it's set up for our benefit in particular. we never give this much attention to people who got written off as worthless from day one, people who slipped through all the cracks, people who can never complain that the system gave them false expectations because it just always treated them like shit. the fact is that gifted programs get higher funding, better teachers, smaller class sizes, greater opportunities. regardless of your personal baggage with the whole thing, it is absolutely undeniable that we were materially privileged, in ways that often overlap with class and race. this privilege is rarely ever acknowledged, or when it is, it's accompanied by a torrent of sob stories that downplay the reality of it. ultimately though, you could not have been "gifted" unless you had un-"gifted" people to be compared to, whether you did so consciously or not. some of you are still comparing themselves to them years on.
mayhaps this was worded inflammatorily but it's very cringe of u all refuse to think past your main character syndrome for just one second. like im sorry you had a hard time coping with real life lmao i did too ive been there i get. but nowhere did i say this is anyone's own fault so save the traumadumping for your therapist. my point is, if youre well into your 20s and you still identify with the intelligence tests you took in elementary school, it's time to get some fucking perspective.
How will the world end?
it’s genuinely not something i think too much about. there are people to love and dishes to do in the meantime.
this is your yearly reminder that dispite the fact that it is an essential part of filmmaking and people literally die doing it, there is no oscar for stunts.
All the people saying that there can’t be an oscar for stunts because they don’t want to incentivize dangerous stunts with a “most dangerous stunt” award don’t seem to realize that the award wouldn’t be for how dangerous the stunt was but rather for how good the stunt actor’s performance was. You can literally just disqualify any stunt performance that causes undue danger to the actor. You can require detailed safety reports for performances to be eligible. You can include a solemn honor for those that are injured or killed doing stunts separately from the whole thing. You can make stunt actor oscar speeches a safe space for calling out directorial or studio malpractice when it comes to actor safety. You can do any of a thousand things to preserve the integrity and safety of your actors without making it a dumb award for people with a foot in the grave, the reason the oscars doesn’t have a stunt award is because they don’t consider stunt actors real actors, and they’re incredibly resistant to changing their mind on literally anything, and only do so after incredible, sustained public pressure.
its 2018. we need to stop blaming serotonin and dopamine and start blaming the real culprit which is the hippocampus that son of a bitch
its 2021. we need to stop always blaming our neurochemical functions and start blaming the real culprit which is our inherently flawed society that prioritizes greed of the few over the needs of the many which enables mental illnesses to flourish without the ability to receive treatment. son of a bitch

Super weird to me that ‘love languages’ are treated like hogwarts houses and not like, like, different facets that appear in varying degrees of everybody
Please stop treating a single modifier as your entire identity. You don’t have to treat yourself like the world is Power Rangers so you have to be the Red One, or the Pink One, or whatever. Trust me, you’re doing yourself a disservice. You’ll always be more complex than that.
It is worth noting that the guy who popularized the concept of “love languages” is an evangelical anti-divorce loon and homophobe. The origins are suspect, is all I’ll say
This morning at brunch the server came out and he was like "unfortunately we don't have ice right now because a server just broke a glass in it" and we were all like "no that's fine I think an element of danger at brunch is sexy and fun" and he was like no absolutely I get that but I still can't let you eat glass at my job
the way studio ghibli romanticises being human...
the more outlandish the world, the more human its characters & the story’s thematic concerns are. like instead of feeling like you’ve “escaped” into a world where human affairs no longer matter or become trivial, you actually enter a world where human affairs are all that matter. fantasy & fiction as a vehicle to highlight humanity
there’s also an environmentalist theme underlying all of this, dare i say anti-capitalist – bc the human affairs are always situated squarely in a broader landscape, a broader human (& creaturely) context. there is no sense of that rugged individualism that governs fictional narratives in the west, the world reduced down to a single individual and their exploits. instead, there are simply people, & animals, & other beings that all exist in a web of relations rather than ordered hierarchically
just had the FUNNIEST interaction with a kid in my life.
im getting help with my laundry and there’s this 4yo black kid who’s super precocious. looks me up and down after hearing my voice and seeing like, little bit of beard through mask but also boobs and was like. are you…a girl? and i said no. then hes like hm. are you…a boy? i said “kinda.” he looks at me a little more and after a brief pause says very loudly “you’re WHITE!”
his mom was SO embarrassed but i was like no you got me there little dude!! i love kids SO much man
