Fun fact, I am looking for a site or program that I can use to catalogue my reading. I want to add books I buy, the date I read them, maybe a line or two about what I thought about them, for my own future reference. I have a lot of books.

I do not want a social website where I connect with other readers. I emphatically do not want a forced analysis of whether I am reading this or that genre or trope on my "profile" page and to what percentage, as if books are only ever one category or another. I EMPHATICALLY do not want AI recommendations, I really can't stress that one enough.

As far as I can tell, it's not out there. It doesn't exist. The idea I might not want a tool designed to be used performatively is apparently unthinkable now.

When I was a teenager I played around "Hypercard" and I made a few useful things with it... I really don't want to learn programming at 48 years old but it's looking like that or a fucking spreadsheet.

Watched The Innocents tonight, an adaptation of The Turn of the Screw. Good film for enjoyers of creepy horror children, and also a good entry in my developing genre fiction analysis that the creepy horror child is a kid who has been so traumatized by something that everyone around them now perceives them as unloveable. The main character insisting that’s she’s saving the children, her constant emphasis on how she loves children (the abstract concept of them), the way she starts to not like them at the same time she becomes convinced some outside force has invaded them so now her distrust and anger at them is justified—and hey maybe there’s also ghosts. But also, it’s all a part of this progression of thoughts you see that goes something like:

Children are innocent in a way adults are not.

Children are precious in a way adults are not.

Innocence is precious.

Precious things can be lost forever.

Childhood is a period of innocence that you are supposed to outgrow. To be an adult is to lose your childhood innocence.

The same way you can never be a child again, you can never be an innocent again.

A child who has lost their innocence has lost what made them a child. They still look like a child. But they behave wrong. Too adult-like. Too mature. They think too much. They know things they shouldn’t. They do things you can’t explain.

What if there was this thing pretending to be a child? Wouldn’t that be such a perversion of nature? Wouldn’t its existence be so monstrous it could only be ignored, dismissed, or reframed? Wouldn’t it be such a relief to stop pretending this perverse thing was precious and to instead treat it like the contaminant that it is?

Here Comes A Ghost.

Still working on the conclusion, hopefully you get the gist. The ghost can also be a demon or psychic powers or evil artifact or general bad vibes. Ideally, the ghost is literal and metaphorical at the same time. Anyway, great film. Now that’s some Gothic Fiction.

This evening I played Creature Kitchen, took me about 3 hours of gently spooky, enjoyable gameplay (I only looked up one puzzle at the end) and a lovely story. It's about the same price as a cheap cinema ticket, too. Highly recommend!

according to An Immense World, apparently giant squid eyes are, like, UNREASONABLY large, even for something their size living at those depths. the next largest eyes on earth, blue whale eyes, are less than half the size, and swordfish, who live at similar depths as giant squid and have the largest eyes of any fish, have eyes that could fit inside a giant squid's pupil.

eyes hit serious diminishing returns wrt resource costs vs vision quality as they get bigger, so the question became: what the FUCK do giant (and colossal) squid need to see so badly that they couldn't see with swordfish-sized eyes that's justifying that massive energy cost? that nothing else in the deep ocean needs to see so fucking badly??

turns out the one strength eyes that big really have over much smaller eyes is: seeing large glowing objects in water deeper than 500 meters from an appreciable distance.

sperm whales are the primary predator of giant squid. sperm whales don't glow. BUT! water that deep is full of bioluminescent creatures-- these creatures light up when bumped into. something a sperm whale's size is continuously bumping into those critters, it's just surrounded by a glowing field all the time when it's swimming at those depths, visible from a distance-- if you have the right eyes-- as a massive glowing shape. so basically the only reason to have eyes the size of soccer balls is if you live in the deep ocean and your life depends on having a heads up when a hungry sperm whale lurking around

and also I gotta say, the imagery... the huge lurking threat betrayed only by the ambiguous glowing shape of its movements through the water, is really evocative, if spooky deep-sea games aren't already using that to make things extremely ominous then they should really start
