Thinking a lot lately about how theon's arc in asoiaf post winterfell takeover is unironically so fucking good because by having grisly torture happen to someone who is low key a terrible person grrm manages to avoid the trap of a lot of other stories about prison or prison adjacent situations which have an "innocent" person as the main character and therefore accidentally end up with their message being "that stuff was terrible because sometimes it happened to people who 'didn't deserve it' because they didn't do anything wrong by the standards of the institution in question" and gets at the actual meat of "torture is unilaterally bad and doesn't work." in this essay I will

A lot of the time people trying to depict things like this as bad go with a main character who shouldn't even be there according to the rules of the institution for sympathy points and it works to an extent but ultimately by saying "it's bad because some of them don't deserve it" you're just acknowledging that anyone who does "deserve it" even exists and therefore granting legitimacy to the system you're trying to criticise. not grrm though he made the guy he uses to say torture is bad suck enormous balls in every way imaginable and Iiiiiiiii think that's beautiful

You know that observation about how pirates are sanitized and caricaturized for modern entertaiment? Well, this would apply even more to knights in my opinion. The literal armed enforcers of the feudal regime.

Of course unlike pirates, knights have had centuries of a good reputation mostly because of the whole (constructed) idea of Chivalry and the general idea in the past that war was good and virile (ACOUP did a good article about this, unfortunately I still don't have my PC so I can't comment on it). All those ideas of Chivalry and honor only applied between people of their similar status though, members of the landowner aristocracy. If you were a rebellious peasant, it was well within their right to murder you.

From our modern perspective a knight would be, and forgive me for using this kinda metaphor, a cross between a landlord and a cop.

I'm not saying that you're a reactionary if you feature knights on your story or like the motif. I'm just saying that you shouldn't take the whole idea of noble knights too seriously, because they certainly didn't.

genuinely it’s so awesome how his entire life and thinking process and worldview are so completely warped around what happened at the tower of joy and yet he cannot bring himself to think about it at all. we the reader don’t get to know what it is either we just know that he cannot move forward and yet cannot look back all he can do is circle around the untouchable unthinkable wound over and over never changing and always ending up in the same place. and then he dies and the paradigm shatters
