Shaving, After vs Before

Finally caved in and shaved my legs after 3 months of fierce femme furriness. Not for any particular aesthetic reason or to please other people/society/the patriarchy.

I just learned that leg hair + tight jeans/leggings/socks do not mix. The friction against the hair was pinching and tugging it and making it itch and hurt really badly, so I had to go smooth and relieve that pain.

I’d probably still be fine with not shaving for a huge length of time until it started hurting my little leg follicles like that again. Everything else is still untouched, though.

It’s not that big of a deal to let it grow if you’re comfortable with your own body hair, forget what others say. Just do something about it when you do feel uncomfortable with it, or whatever else floats your boat! Your body, your hair, your choice.

Hola María! Tengo que decir que el año pasado, terminando mi carrera de periodismo, pensé en hacer un trabajo muy similar al tuyo (me alegro de que alguien se atreviese!!!). En otro orden de cosas, justamente esta mañana me quedé anonadada de la reacción de mis compañeros de curso ante una foto de una mujer desnuda con abundante bello púbico. De verdad, será por mi círculo de confianza, pero me parecía ver una parodia de una serie en vez de gente hablar. ¡Brindemos por el cambio! :) y gracias!

Hola Xiana! Muchas gracias por tu mensaje, la verdad es que al principio fue un poco complicado atreverme a hacerlo, pero cuanto más lo hablaba entre mis cercanos más necesario lo veía. Es normal lo de tu clase, tristemente, por eso es tan necesario crear nuestras propias imágenes e inundar la red con ellas. Brindo contigo, gracias a ti y un abrazo! :)

HIRSUTAS es el resultado final de un proyecto de Investigación a través de las Artes Visuales realizado por la fotógrafa María Barba, utilizando la fotografía como herramienta para la creación de nuevas imágenes en torno al vello corporal y la depilación femenina. Con esta investigación se pretende aumentar el debate actual sobre la construcción de género en base al vello corporal, indagar en las prácticas depilatorias a través de la fotografía, crear redes de difusión de esta información y proponer acciones pedagógicas en torno al vídeo y la fotografía que ayuden a aumentar este imaginario visual.

HIRSUTAS is the final result of a research project through visual arts by the photographer María Barba, using photography as a tool to create new images concerning body hair and female depilation. This research intends increase current debates about gender construction based on body hair, investigating depilation practices through photography, creating networks to ease the access to this information and proposing educational practices concerning video and photography to help to enhance this visual imagery.

HIRSUTAS es un proyecto de Investigación a través de las Artes Visuales, utilizando la fotografía como herramienta para la creación de nuevas imágenes en torno al vello corporal y la depilación femenina. Con esta investigación se pretende aumentar el debate actual sobre la construcción de género en base al vello corporal, indagar en las prácticas depilatorias a través de la fotografía, crear redes de difusión de esta información y proponer acciones pedagógicas en torno al vídeo y la fotografía que ayuden a aumentar este imaginario visual.

El vello corporal ha sido durante miles de años símbolo de virilidad y fuerza, construyendo en contraposición lo que significa una feminidad aceptable y lampiña. A pesar de que la depilación corporal afecta hoy día tanto al sexo masculino como al femenino, es sin duda en el cuerpo de la mujer donde más se estigmatiza la visibilidad de vello. No existe en nuestro imaginario visual referentes suficientes para ayudar a concebir la depilación corporal como una opción estética en nuestras vidas. El arte nos puede ayudar a comprender mejor esta realidad, y es en este sentido que la fotografía no sólo la puede documentar sino que también la visibiliza y por tanto la exterioriza, la hace posible y cuestionable.

Body hair has been considered a sign of virility and strength during thousand years, building an opposite perception of feminity to be acceptable and hairless. Despite nowadays body depilation affects both male and female, it is definitely women body the most stigmatized regarding hair visibility. Our visual imagery does not consider enough references yet that help to conceive hair removal just as an aesthetic choice in our lives. Art may help us to better understand this reality, in this way, photography not only can document but also externalize it and make it visible, possible and questionable.

Unflattering top-down view of my calamity calf, after and before my first waxing experience. About as much work as shaving, though the slight chance for longer smoothness, reduced chance of bleeding, and my own fascination with pulled hairs means I prefer waxing to shaving I think. If I had the money and opportunity I’d so get my legs waxed in a salon.
