Do any of you have unresolved blood feuds with me .
@rionakamura that makes a lot of sense it’s only showing me the hour for now but i’m guessing it shows the actual date if the post is from more than a day ago. i still dont know how to reply to replies so i am just @ ing you
this site is really scary because reblogs don’t have an attached date and i havent followed new people in here for like 3 years so theres no way to tell if the stuff in my timeline is from just now or from like 3 months ago
I used to be a teenager and that’s the root of all my problems today. Never should have done that.
Christians will see you struggling emotionally and be like "nows my chance!"

tumblr people focus so much on a hyper-superficial understanding of fascism that they reduce “watching out for fascists” to looking for signs of Pepe the Frog and meanwhile endorse full blown fascist rhetoric like that “Culture isnt meant to be shared, culture is about tradition, family etc” post or engage in what amounts of unintentional apologetics like that post that said Nazis never burned nasty literary porn
“Make sure to watch out for triple parenthesis and also sign my petition to have AO3 taken down for wrongthink”
I think it has to do with the general ‘avoid contagion’ theories they hold.
Like, they think that getting too close to a subject makes it so that subject corrupts you, that’s the basis of their purity crusades. Porn must be destroyed because it CORRUPTS people, and studying it is the same as consuming it in their eyes. Things like that.
So rather than doing any actual research on Fascism, they look for superficial things they can associate with it. Looking for ‘signs’ of fascism in media consumed or memes used.
But because of that, they are completely ignorant to the actual NATURE of fascism, what the ideology is and it’s political theories, what it preaches as an ideal.
So they end up repeating it, thinking that as long as they replace ‘Nationalism’ with ‘Social Progress’ that what they believe is entirely different.
Oh! I wasn’t aware about the culture thing! When I see posts about culture remaining in families, I assume it’s about marginalized cultures fighting back against white people who take their shit and disguard it. Could somebody please help me understand a bit better since I’m not really sure how to handle this (I’m a white ass person who is dumb as fuck lmao)
How can I respect other cultures who want to keep their traditions and ways of life preserved in the face of oppression- but also avoid falling into fascist traps? Like- these people idk- I don’t know if they’ll even mind sharing their culture but a lot of Americans) at least) like to shit on everything. @memecucker I know you probably aren’t an expert, but what’s your take on this?
Kwame Anthony Appiah says good stuff on this subject and this essay of his (secondary link if youre getting paywalled) s a good introduction. An important takeaway from it is how often it is that sharing culture is itself how people practice a cultural practice in the first place.
This is a passage I like to highlight
Besides, trying to find some primordially authentic culture can be like peeling an onion. The textiles most people think of as traditional West African cloths are known as Java prints; they arrived in the 19th century with the Javanese batiks sold, and often milled, by the Dutch. The traditional garb of Herero women in Namibia derives from the attire of 19th-century German missionaries, though it is still unmistakably Herero, not least because the fabrics used have a distinctly un-Lutheran range of colors. And so with our kente cloth: the silk was always imported, traded by Europeans, produced in Asia. This tradition was once an innovation. Should we reject it for that reason as untraditional? How far back must one go? Should we condemn the young men and women of the University of Science and Technology, a few miles outside Kumasi, who wear European-style gowns for graduation, lined with kente strips (as they do now at Howard and Morehouse, too)? Cultures are made of continuities and changes, and the identity of a society can survive through these changes. Societies without change aren’t authentic; they’re just dead.
Additionally, sharing culture can itself be the means of preserving it! If a particular cultural practice is actually supposed to be closed to ‘outsiders’ (however that may be defined) that tends to be an important rule and will typically be made very clear.
One example Im thinking of is in the Philippines with batok the traditional tattooing practices of the Kalinga people. The last recognized master of the practice is a woman named Whang-Od Oggay and traditionally speaking batok tattoos are only done by and for members of the same tribe (”tribe” in this case does not mean “Kalinga” which is an ethnolingustic term but the actual tribal social structure, in Whang-Od’s case her tribe is the Butbut) but she has opened up the practice to outsiders (which includes other Filipinos and also foreigners) if they are willing to make the trek to her isolated village and undergo the very long and painful traditional tattooing process. Now when something is a “closed practice” there tends to be an actual reason and logic to it and its not simply “just because” and in the case of batok its because many traditional tattoos conveyed meanings which were incoherent if one was not a member of the tribe such as eagle tattoos signifying someone conducted an act of bravery for the tribe or tattoos which convey ones ancestry within the tribe. She doesnt give those tattoos to outsiders not out of xenophobia but because they wouldnt make sense. She is however willing to give tattoos that are supposed to give a kind of magical blessing such as good fortune or heightened virility/fertility.
Whang-Od opening up the art of batok to outsiders was not a sad concession but rather a deliberate move to preserve the art! One of the reasons why batok was on the decline is that many Kalinga people felt that having those traditional tattoos marked them as targets for discrimination (like many people from Filipino highlands) and being viewed as “savages”. Whang-Od however preserves her art by promoting her art and this includes opening up certain tattoo designs to outsiders. This has the result of de-Otherizing traditional Kalinga culture meaning that other Kalinga people now seek to revive the practice as well. Sharing a culture is often the means of preserving it and something I think the discourse on cultural appropriation sorely misses is asking specifically the people actually involved in a cultural practice what they think. When you adopt the mindset of assuming that cultural practices are “closed” by default you arent helping the people of the culture in question, youre simply following an abstract rule that was created without care or consideration for the nuances that go into cultural practices.
imagine if all our jobs actually mattered n were essential cogs of our community instead of so many being fake shitty jobs made to tryn uphold unimportant things2 create profit for rich ppl. imagine how less soul sucking everything wud b if u knew every job we all did mattered and helped th community instead of so often being pointless :/
