I really, really want to emphasize that a lot of my activism-vs-posting posts are expressly not saying "you should simply stop trying"

They are saying "here is why trying to fight every evil in the world by yourself using nothing but your social media account is a bad idea."

If you want your effort to lead to something instead of just throwing effort into a void, you have to get involved with organized activism. I can't tell you which organization to join, because I don't know where you live, and I don't know what causes are important to you. Divert some of the effort you're putting into scrolling into figuring that out.

it's something that gets to me about the handwringing over ozempic and the especially skeletal celebrities recently. there has never been a time when hollywood has not REVOLVED around disordered eating and warped body image. the only difference is now they look unappealingly sick.

I was reading an article about karen carpenter, and her friends and the journalist AFTER her death from anorexia were praising her initial dieting behaviour when it took her from "chubby" to slender. her behaviour didn't change from that point, but they were just frustrated she didn't stop while she was at her most conventionally attractive.

you are expected to be obsessed with what you eat and how you look. acknowledging that this is an obsession which kills people is at odds with our entire popular conception of what "health" even is. so even if the eating is disordered all along, we only call it that in the individuals who don't let us maintain the smokescreen that this is healthy and normal. you can tell it's disordered eating because they look bad. and recovering makes you more attractive.

Stuff like this always makes me remember how sensationalized the ​“hide your kids, hide your wife” video was, also known as the “bedroom intruder meme” 🗿.

The guy was clearly one of the earliest memes of a black person expressing frustration publicly (it was a news report of the man explaining how he’d run off a predator trying to rape his sister by the way) but in a “funny way” (the way that nbs and whites find entertaining at least because they don’t see black trauma as something that should be given grace, and shown empathy right from the very start over their own intial enjoyment because that’s no fun), and something like this became a huge joke. Like, this meme was literally everywhere in the early 2000’s, and I think people forgot that his sister was almost raped 🧍🏾‍♀️…………………………..!

Forgot to mention just in case people start acting stupid oh this post if it randomly blows up (I’m not popular here so I might be free 🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀) but the bedroom intruder meme was turned into music, merch, the brother was even on tv shows, and tbh, I personally never cared if poor black folks decide to capitalize off of a meme that made them viral to change their situation. It’s better they get something out of it because whites and nbs are laughing anyway, while making their money off of black trauma. That’s how it always is with these memes. It’s awful.

It was not a potato famine. The famine didn’t happen because of the potato yeald failing. Ireland was actually producing more than enough food. However it was almost all land owned by Brittish landowners, who took all of the food out of the country to sell in UK. Potato was what the Irish farmers ate, because it was cheep and could be produced in worst parts of the land, where more profitable food couldn’t be grown. When there were no longer potatos, the decision for the farmers was to either starve and sent the food as rent to the landlords or loose their homes and then starve.

The Brittish goverment was unwilling to do anything for two reasons. First was the laissez-faire capitalistic ideology, that put the rights of property owners to make profits above human lives. Rent freeze was unthinkable and they even were unwilling to do proper relief efforts as free food would lower the cost of food. The second reason was distain for the Irish, and the thought that they were “breeding too much” and the famine was a natural way to trim down the population, aka genocidal reasoning.

This is why it’s important to stress it was not a potato famine. The potato blinght was all over Europe but only in Ireland there was a famine. The reasons behind it had nothing to do with potatos and everything to do with the Brittish.

Apparently what made Choctaw want to offer relief to Irish was the news about the Doolough Tragedy. Hundreds of starving people were gathered for inspection to verify they were entitled to recieve relief. The officials would for *some reason* not do that and instead left to a hunting lodge 19 kilometers away to spend the night and said to the starvqing people they would have to walk there by morning to be inspected. The weather conditions were terrible and many of them died completely needlessly during the walk thoroung day and night.

This apparently reminded the Choctaw of their own very recent (and much more explicit and bigger scale) experiences of ethnic clensing, where they were forcibly relocated. It was basically a death march and thousands of Choctaw died from the terrible conditions also completely needlessly.

In 2015 a memorial named Kindred Spirits was installed in Southern Ireland to commemorate the Chactow donation.
