Recently I listened to the latest Latepass podcast with intotheswamp ft. crystalleww (which I recommend!) and it included a bit about the importance of criticising your faves and also a bit about rock music being more likely to get a pass for misogyny.

It reminded me of a recent experience of listening back to Elbow’s debut album, and one of my all-time favourites, Asleep in the Back, and being very uncomfortable with the song “Bitten by the Tailfly”.

It’s a song about a Saturday night out essentially told from the point of view of a sexual predator. It comes complete with a set of established and awful tropes about uncontrollable, animal male sexuality and reluctant but receptive female sexuality. “I’m a dog without a collar on/you’re a girl in this vicinity”. “You barely have a blossom on/your eyes betray your diaries/you’re a girl in this vicinity”. More poetic but more horrible than I know you want it. It ends with a repetition of “[I’ll] get you on your own” over which Guy Garvey bellows “sweetness, don’t be bashful”.

The case for the song’s defence is that it’s meant to be horrible. Getting away from just taking it as assumed that they’re good people and couldn’t have meant otherwise, there are things to support it. The album starts with a wish for escape and is often about the worst aspects of their town. In “Little Beast”, “Fear is not respect, correct/but it’s the best you’re gonna get” is clearly not meant as an endorsement. “Bitten By the Tailfly” has ominous drums and ugly slashes of guitar that lend themselves to intensifying horror. Its line early on “I’m full of wit and chivalry/until you’ve given into me” is not a song glorifying its protagonist.

None of the other horrors of the album are told in first person, though, and that line offering insight from the outside of the situation is troublesome in its own way. It doesn’t offer an unreliable narrator so much as a nasty but honest narrator, and there’s nothing in the song to give him a comeuppance or to offer an alternative to his reports of the women in the song. Certainly not anything giving their perspective. The problems with the song’s execution are too big for me to enjoy it, rather than spend it thinking about all of this.

Now, I don’t expect a big fuss or Guy Garvey to have Krishnan Guru-Murthy quote its lyrics at him, because it’s an album track by a band who didn’t find much success until many years later. But I searched for anyone discussing it as troublesome and just found an old NME review that said it was about “drunken mating rituals”. In more personal reasons for listening to the song being uncomfortable, I remember as a teen I once suggested it on a messageboard thread about sexy songs! And no one replied to say “what the fuck iain”. It does seem like another case where you’re more likely to be given the unquestioning benefit of just playing a role if you’re male and indie.

Daniel here! Welcome to #LATEPASS, a podcast about the pop culture that we've ignored and why, as well as the pop culture that we've only just caught up with (hence the phrase "latepass"). For our first episode, we spoke with Joey and Victoria from the Providence-based cumbia-punk band Malportado Kids about being latecomers to electronic music. The following is discussed, too: the difficulty of being a POC into punk music, brass bands, pop music, anti-masculinity over feminism, and your grandma making you mixtapes.
