why was she continuing to pester him? he had wanted to scare her away. he had wanted her to quit bothering him. but here she stood, prying more into his business while he was simply trying to do his job. his comment had been a lie. a ruse to try and freak her out. he wasn’t part of a freakshow. he was simply a mascot for the thrift store he was currently standing outside of. in fact, he didn't understand how she didn't already know that considering they bright yellow sign he was holding. taking another drag of his cigarette, painted hues roll in impatience.  “    yeah sure, kid    “

it was confusing. the act of kindness toward a stranger. perplexing to the male. especially since he rarely had experience with kindness to begin with. this city was RUTHLESS. a good deed was a rarity. so no wonder arthur now stood in stunned silence, gathering his thoughts. fatigue ridden eyes linger before suddenly being cast to the ground as rough voice emerges again.

“    you’re really offering me a place to stay?    “  he was unsure of her motives, perhaps this was merely a trick. a cruel JOKE to kick him while he’s down. and then the rain poured, and he visibly flinches. an exasperated sigh passing torn lips. TYPICAL. calloused hand reaches upward to grab onto his navy hood and yank it over his head, despite his ragged hair already being drenched now.

𝐇𝐈𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐔𝐀𝐋    :    the cold shoulder

   Victor Fries looked up from his newspaper to glance at the only other person sitting in the rather dull looking waiting room .  Pale blue eyes blinked a couple of times as he drank the man’s appearance in (even if a bit apprehensively) . He looked, above all things, tired ; far more tired than Dr. Fries. And he would have said he fit right into the psychiatrist’s severe looking decor were it not for his brightly colored jacket . There was some fun there , SOMETHING DARING .That was good, Victor thought . Since his wife had found out about her illness all she did was dress in BLACK AND GREY , trying to sink into the background, become part of Gotham’s asphalt , allow herself to fade away without anyone noticing . But Victor couldn’t worry . He had no time for it . HE’D FIND A WAY TO FIX THIS .

The Doctor folded his newspaper , his head bowing down a bit sheepishly when realizing he had left the man’s sentence hanging for a second too long .           ❝    ━━  I can’t recall the last time I’ve had a nightmare. ❞      He admitted, leaning back against his chair, offering a small smile at the rather fragile looking man .        ❝  My mind isn’t creative enough to horrify me. ❞     There was supposed to be humor in his words, but instead, Victor was met with a bitter taste over his tongue. He too sounded tired. Tired of doctors and psychiatrists and medication ; all that was supposed to make his wife’s end EASIER FOR HER only seemed to bring her more misery . Dear beautiful Nora … He imagined her sobbing behind that closed door to a stranger who was paid to tell her to LET GO. Victor bent one leg over the other, trying to focus on his chatting buddy rather than the outrage poking at his guts .

        ❝  My dreams are always about the how rather than the if . Solving issues rather than exploring them. ❞     He thought about offering the other man a smile. But whatever optimism he might have hidden in the corners of his lips died out at the sight of his wife, shutting the door behind her with swollen red eyes .    ❝  But I’m not entirely sure that’s an healthier option . ❞    

his posture seemed to give sight into his emotions.  his hands were nervously clasped together. hunched forward, legs crossed. it was as though he didn’t want anyone to notice him. but his brightly colored outfit said otherwise. a blue and orange pattern shirt hung from scrawny body. barley fitting him at all. not at all. his stare was haphazardly laid upon his company. arthur was always here. every other day in fact. he had come to get to know the other patients quite well. that wasn’t to say he would consider them acquaintances. he rarely spoke to them. he didn’t even know of them outside these walls. walls that held such secrets. such tears. such agony. but he didn’t recognize him. nor his wife for that matter. he was intrigued. but his comment may have come across as somewhat off putting. 

arthur was getting  WORSE.  he hadn’t shown any progress for quite some time now. not since his mother’s death. it seemed as though he didn’t even try anymore. like he didn’t want to get better. like he didn’t see a  POINT  in doing so anymore. his words were often cryptic now. off handed riddles that made sense seemingly only to him. it was sad. just a few months ago arthur had made real progress. he came out of the deep end. but he always got thrown back in. again and again and again. never ending. relentlessly. the psychiatrist saw arthur at his worst. they saw his tortured mind.  AND THEY WERE AFRAID.  there was nothing they could do to stop it. there was no telling what he might end up doing. and they were afraid.

a hand raises. gesturing a finger toward the other. “   maybe your dreams are having pity on you because you’re  LIVING  in a nightmare  ”  another strange statement. yet somewhat profound. perhaps this mad man had more sense to him than was first let on.

𝐍𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐎𝐈𝐂𝐒    :    another freak

the hostage flees and it’s one less heart beat to worry about. One less life to put on the line. It was just a clown and a bat. Two crazy people with guns in their hand. The Mad Man’s weapon more lethal than the arsenal within his belt surely but nothing he didn’t prepare. Nothing he didn’t spend the last decade or so training himself for. But even then there’s a twitch — a tremor much closer to fear than anything else. Doubt that bleeds into his sigh.

But there was no room for second guessing. No chance for doubt. No way for him to back away now without risking some other poor innocent soul to get caught in the cross fire. So he falls down, jumps from his perch, hides behind a crate before he answers. Always just almost within vision and almost within reach. “ Yeah, something like that. ” And with another swing of his hand, he throws a smoke bomb as a distraction. Hoping to get nearer and incapacitate him before he could use that gun on him.

the clown found it somewhat amusing.   the way he moved, so determined. so calculated and trained. the joker knew his advantage was his  UNPREDICTABILITY.  what good would any amount of training be against someone who you can’t predict the actions of? weapon is spun around digits carelessly as eyes watch the other intently, gaze locked. this was a  GAME.  nothing more. sure, he had lost his prey as a result. they were lucky to have fled when they had. but now onto more important matters. he was already intrigued by him.

his gun is put back in his pocket as smoke surrounds him. chin tilted upwards as eyes wander. back and forth. back and forth. searching for the figure. searching for the shadow. he simply stood there, prepared for some form of attack. yet he looked utterly relaxed. shoulders drooped and hands in pockets. at first look, it would appear he wasn’t on guard. the knife held firmly in hand within his pocket said otherwise.

𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐒    :    what a freak

           ❛  we    𝑚𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑠     have  a  better  way   —–      when  we  dislike  a  friend  of  ours,    𝐰𝐞  𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭  𝐡𝐢𝐦.   ❜   𝒊𝒕’𝒔  𝒇𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒚.    at  least,    he  thinks  it’s  funny.    the  idea,    despite  the  lack  of  truth.    maybe  it  was  funny  because  it  wasn’t  true  —-    𝑚𝑎𝑦𝑏𝑒  𝑖𝑡  𝑤𝑎𝑠  𝑓𝑢𝑛𝑛𝑦  𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒  𝘩𝑒  𝑤𝑖𝑠𝘩𝑒𝑑  𝑖𝑡   𝑤𝑎𝑠.

eyes swiftly flash towards ceiling before falling to bore deep. judgement sharpens gaze like a knife. though, for once, arthur finds himself not laughing at someone else’s joke.   HOW IRONIC.   cruel irony. like a bullet to the gut. 

“     i prefer a far more efficient approach   ”  it was no lie that joker   ENJOYED   killing. yet when he killed, it was quick. without hassle. no time to savor the kill. then again, the clown had a high enough kill count for the delight to be gradual.

𝐂𝐔𝐏𝐀𝐈𝐃𝐄   :    stranger

                          “         ——       ugh!     ”              down on her luck          ,          frustration is as clear as can be          .          there’s a simmering kind of fury in the way her mouth twists          ,          anALMOST SNARL   with grit teeth that could easily turn into a bite          .          beneath her heel a can iscrushed          ,          decimated on the dirty sidewalk as a poor         ( but easily accessible )          outlet          .

it takes a moment for her to be fully aware           ,           she’s not alone           .           harley knows she’s in disarray          ,           but makes due regardless           :          offering a sweet as cherries smile           ,           even if it was lined with bared teeth           .              “        y’got a light           ,           mister? ”            

her question had taken him off guard. it was rare that anyone willingly spoke to him without prior need. her frustration is first caught. then hand reaches into pocket. he reveals a cigarette packet along with a lighter   ━   holding it out to her in the palm of his hand. 

a cigarette is taken from it’s packaging and placed between coarse lips, then lit. his gaze falters from her. now attentive upon the filthy pavement beneath them. he did not speak. not feeling it was his place. she was a    STRANGER    after all.

𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐌𝐄    :    little nuisance

     WIDE BLUE EYES FLICKERED from one side to the other, laced with confusion, guilt, and a little bit of fear. It was the look of a man caught red handed ( Twice in one week? Damn- he really needed to get better at sneaking around ). “ I was just lookin’. ” Harley insisted with a whine garbled by the grip on his painted cheeks. The joker was damn lucky he’d remembered to set his grease today. “ Y'told me ‘paws off’, and see? ” He raised his hands and wiggled his fingers. True to his word, not a single digit had touched the forbidden fruit.  “ Paws remained inside the vehicle at all times. I just wanted a li'l peak. Y’can’t get mad at me for peakin’.”

expression turns sour. a grimace formed. hand now shifting to grip tight upon the other’s golden locks. though, even he knew he wasn’t going to hurt him. not really. he seemed to be one of the only people the joker wouldn’t bare to harm in any way.   “    i told you not to snoop around my things  ━  but you juuust couldn’t help yourself, could you?    ”   his speech is condescending. somewhat dismissive. it was no mystery that he was irked by his actions. gradually now, grip is loosened. instead his focus is averted to the papers scattered across his desk. he’s quick to gather them all up, and cast them away into a drawer. hidden.

𝐏𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐗    :    please just pity laugh at least

feathery     combs     of     moss     cover     the     walls     like     curtains,  vines     reclaiming     what’s     rightfully     nature’s     creation     through     small     gaps     in     the     floor.     every     inch     gives     an     abandoned     appearance,     all     the     way     down     to     splintered     doorways     and     shattered     window     panes.     she     doesn’t     mind     the     cool     spring     breeze     or     sun     shining     through     like     brilliant     ribbons     dancing     against     worn     out     furniture.     simply     put,     TOXIC     ACRES    isn’t     meant     for     human     exploration,     and     yet     there’s     still     someone     brave     enough     -     or     perhaps     foolish     to     think     she’d     welcome     his     company     at     any     time.     night     or     day,     hell     frozen     over     ;     his     goofy     smirk     is     enough     to     elicit     an     audible     hiss     when     the     door     flings     open,     rusty    hinges     hanging     on     for     dear     life.        

❝          if     this     is     another     one     of     your     terrible     jokes     …     ❞     her     jaw     locks     into     place,     rage     consuming     emerald     eyes     that     bore     into     his     own.     they     might     as     well     be     burning     embers     with     the     way     they     seemingly     sear     through     his     skull…          ❝     i’m    BUSY     working,     and     forgetting     buffoons     like     you     exist.     do     you     even     know     how     deadly     it     is     for     you     to     be     here    ??   not     that     i     care     if     you     drop     dead     at     my     doorstep,     but     you’re     not     genetically     built     to     survive     toxic     acres     for     long.     ❞

expeditious action. abrupt. the performance of hand sliding into pocket, promptly a red rubber clown nose is snatched from it’s warm resting place. it’s then moved, fixed firmly upon the end of his nose. the act was casual. nonchalant. green hues cast back to dilapidated notebook. tumultuous writings become blurred with anxiety. focus was lost. her words repeating relentlessly in his mind.   TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE.   who did he think he was fooling? if the folks who paid to watch a stand up comedian didn’t think he was funny, then why should she? BECAUSE HE THOUGHT THEY WERE ACQUAINTANCES. because he had mistakenly assumed that she understood. her words of warning had not even been registered. falling on deaf ears. the risk of being in this area wasn’t important to him.

he tries a second joke. struggling to keep beam plastered on his aged features.   BUT STILL THERE WAS NO LAUGHTER.   unexpectedly, he snaps book shut. gaze now fixed upon her. emotionless stare. “    it’s no deadlier here than in the rest of this city -    ” words are spoken absentmindedly. yet harsh. the juxtaposition between his current tone from how he had spoken earlier was almost unnerving. yet the clown nose remains put. STRANGE. then again, there wasn't much about arthur that wasn't.

“     well, well, well ms. danse  ━   what a pleasure    ”  the clown gives a theatrical bow, cigarette clasped between index and middle finger as arm is cast out to his side. green locks falling asunder over his face. posture is resumed upright, a low guffaw as the cigarette is placed back between painted lips. was this   MOCKERY?   or pure annoyance to get under her skin? nevertheless, he approaches her now. his steps   SLOW AND CALCULATED. was he one step ahead? what were his intentions?

𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐆𝐄𝐑 𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆     :     violence, suicide mention, mental illness, dementia, death

growing up, arthur and his mother were inseparable. they weren't just mother and son but best friends. after all, they were really all each other had considering penny was a single mother and how much arthur struggled to make friends his own age. arthur was bullied by practically all of his peers because they deemed him strange, making him an outcast for most of his life. 

being diagnosed with depression at a young age, penny had often viewed the world as a bleak place full of suffering. but when arthur was born, he became the single ray of light in her life. the one thing that could make her smile, and she knew he could do the same for other's. she told him it was his destiny to bring joy to the world. to make other's laugh. arthur, always wanting to do his mother proud, became obsessed and fixated with comedy. he dropped out of school at a very young age because penny simply couldn't afford an education for her son, but arthur took it as his oppertunity to persue his passion for comedy. 

for his elementary and high school years, penny attempted to teach arthur as much as he could. basic spelling. basic maths. but mainly she focused on preparing him for the harsh world. when he wasn't spending his time learning, arthur would sit in front of the television studying old comedy shows, stand-ups and films.

he moved out of his mother's house at the age of twenty, living with a roommate he had befriended because of their mutual persuit of stand-up comedy. they later fall out because of arthur's jealousy that he could never come up with anything as funny as his friend could. as a result, he was evicted from the apartment. arthur lived on the streets for a brief time, his mother begging him to come back and live with her for his safety, but his pride prevented him from accepting her offer.

but arthur finally moved back in with his mother following her suicide attempt. he returned to take care of her. but also realizing that he's the only thing she really cares for, he hopes that his presence will prevent her from attempting again. he is her only ray of light. unfortunately, being a man in his thirties still living with his mother caused the torment and bullying from his work colleagues to worsen. following an attack from a group of unknown workmates after a stand-up gig, arthur ends up in hospital. during his time there, penny attempts once again, believing arthur is dead and fearing she's lost the only good thing in her life. it's for this reason that arthur decides to stop working and care for his mother indefinitely.

unfortuneately, he eventually had to come to terms with the fact that he was not fit to care for her. having to deal with his own mental illnesses, penny agrees to allow arthur to admit her into arkham state hospital. here, she is diagnosed with dementia. he visits her everyday, eventually spending more time with her than at home. he wanted to be there for her. he felt guilty that she had to stay in such a horrible place because he couldn't take care of her. he felt like it was his fault.

penny died her sleep at the age of seventy-two. arthur warrants losing his mother as the worse thing to ever happen to him. he becomes lost without her. shutting himself in for months on end. eventually re-attempting his persuit of a career in stand-up comedy as his last promise to his mother. he wanted to achieve what she had always wanted for him. what she wanted his gift to the world to be. he wanted to help people laugh. he wanted to make people happy, even if he couldn't make himself happy. he wanted to do it for his mother.
