I'm not in the fandom so i don't know how prevalent these theories are, but through playing deltarune again, here are 10 personal theories of mine. These are just based on random information i've gotten from the game and i probably won't elaborate on them because I already typed wayyyyy more than i usually do and i'm already burnt out lmao.
Anyways:
1. Kris' Soul has a Patience Soul
2. Kris is helping the knight because their Soul is being held hostage. They were lied to(explained in theory 10), that they can have their soul back if they pretend to be the first hero and keep the heroes at bay (us the vessel, Susie and Ralsei).
3. Determination isn't a normal soul trait, but rather a sort-of infection that can take over the soul
4. The prophecy is that we need to seal all fountains including castle town, aka destroy the dark world entirely
5. Ralsei is the roots running underneath hometown from all the trees tangled together
6. The man behind the tree is the childhood-dissociated-suppressed memories of Kris' therapist who they saw shortly after the Dess tragedy. Possibly kris only saw them a few times, the moved away, and the man is a fuzzy memory kris can't quite remember
7. The eggs are evidence the dark world is real, even if the darkworlds disappear forever, because its the only item that doesn't change shape in anyway when being brought back to the light world
8. I think this is a given, but in the weird route, Kris and Noelle "glitched" out of the map and have ended up somewhere else entirely which we'll see later
9. Dess died inside a darkworld. Which is why Dess is considered missing in the lightworld, rather then dead. Carol is trying to bring Dess back to life with the darkworlds, which is why she need Kris to keep the heroes at bay. Dess can only properly manifest in the shelter dark world because Dess, or someone that properly knew Dess, made that world. Like how Gerson can only properly manifest in the knights church darkworld instead of Susie's. Because the knight knew Gerson when he was alive. (You could argue that Kris could make Dess properly manifest in their darkworlds, but Kris was probably traumatised by the tragedy, so mentaly blocks Dess out). This is under the assumption Dess is the knight.
10. They need all the different soul traits to properly bring Dess back to life.
Dess' Monster Soul
Kris' Patience (cyan) which is also the human soul necessary for the process
Undyne's kindness (green)
Asgore's justice (yellow)
Toriel's Perseverance (purple)
Papyrus', Sans' or Berdly's Integrity (blue)
And finally Susie's bravery (orange) who's to be brought last to the shelter to give her as little time as possible to save anyone before its too late (Susie might be purple, but they have a orange heart as their belt buckle)
Then all the traits will be sacrifed and fused into Dess' soul, bringing her back to life with a monster-determination Soul like Asriel's Undertale boss form. Its possible our soul was a test run soul that proved to Carol that this whole process is possible to revive Dess

The dark world are being created to figure out what each characters soul traits are to see if they qualify to be candidates to be sacrificed. I think Berdly was supposed to be taken as the Integrity soul, but Carol ultimately chose not to because of his close bond to Noelle and Carol doesn't want to scar Noelle even more by taking away a close friend of hers. Either that, or Berdly has been in limbo since chapter 2, and now that they just need Integrity and Bravery, its time to bring both of them to the shelter to hurt Noelle as little as possible (in Carol's eyes at least). This is also why Carol wants Susie to stay away from Noelle so Noelle won't be as hurt by Susie's "disappearance".
(Ps the church dark world was supposed to exist to try and kidnap Toriel again but she didn't end up going to choir practice)
